4 Star Review EW-73B Lens Hood for 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S Lens

Strengths:

Looks Great! Reduces flare and protects lens.

Weaknesses:

Very bulky storage. Vignette when used with camera built-in-flash

Posted Jul 10, 2005 - I love the lens, and the lens hood certainly comes in handy. It protects the lens from accidental knocks and from fingerprints. Flare is reduced in some circumstances, but flare really has not been a big problem with this lens. One interesting effect is the lens looks great, and makes people think you are a pro. The lens hood should have been bundles with the lens. It is very bulky for storage in my camera bag. There is a definite vignette effect when used with the camera's built-in-flash when set at wide angle. This has not produced any noticeable effect for fill-in flash outdoors.

4 Star Review Makes you look like a pro...

Strengths:

Sturdy construction, can be used for lens protection

Weaknesses:

Cost considering it should be included with the lens

Posted Oct 28, 2005 - While the lens hood is suppose to cut glare and unwanted light from all your pictures, I can't seem to tell the difference, maybe because I'm not a pro or just haven't taken photos for comparison. The only time I find it really helpful is if the sun is already in or near the picture and the petal shape of the hood can block the sunlight coming directly into the lens. That being said, the hood is made of a nice hard plastic with a felt-like lining on the interior of the hood. Feels nice and sturdy and able to take some punishment in it's job of protecting the lens. The hood attaches and locks onto the lens nicely. While you can install the hood backwards for storage or when you actually want a flare effect, it should be noted that this will obstruct the zoom ring when the lens is at the 17mm wide angle end. You can still use your finger tips to rotate the zoom ring, but that's highly inconvenient. The focus ring is unaffected by this setup. Finally, expect people to think you're a pro once you have the hood attached. This can be a good or bad thing...

4 Star Review Another great Canon product

Strengths:

Easy to install/remove. Looks great. Reduces glare

Weaknesses:

Should have come with the lens

Posted Jul 21, 2005 - I agree with the other reviewers - some vignette affect. The hood is made of a sturdy plastic and is lined with what feels like felt. It is well made and easy to install and remove. It can be installed backwards on the lens for storage so I don't understand what the other comments about being bulky for storage. It looks great on the camera and adds a nice touch. The cost is reasonable - $29 or so which is only about 6% of the cost of the lense itself - less than sales tax in most states! Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

3 Star Review Canon EW-73B Lens Hood for 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S Lens

Strengths:

Easier to install and remove that I would have thought.Lens cap accessible with it installed.

Weaknesses:

Price for sure for a piece of plastic.

Posted Jan 10, 2006 - I would have to agree with other postings that it should be included with the lens, especially considering the price of the lens. It seems to be quite flexable plastic so hopefully it won't break. I've mainly used it outside in sun light.

4 Star Review Well build

Strengths:

Well build and fit well

Weaknesses:

Pricey

Posted Apr 23, 2006 - Very good lens hood. Well build and fit the lens very well. But the pricey is still high for such a plastic item, which should be free included in lens. But it is not.

5 Star ReviewThis lens hood, that should be included with the l ...

Strengths:

Does the job. Easy to install/remove. Allows removal/placement of the lens-cap quite easily even when installed. Protects the lens along with a UV-filter.

Weaknesses:

Too much money especially for a part that *should be included with the lens*.

Posted Jun 3, 2005 - This lens hood, that should be included with the lens purchase, is an essential item if you shoot outdoors during the day. It is sturdily built and easy to install and remove (which is good since the hood needs to be removed especially if 20D's built-in flash is used because the hood results in shadows in the picture). Besides helping to reduce the flare effect (i.e. if you *want* flare effect, you should not use a lens hood :) it also protects the lens by extending beyond the end of the lens.

5 Star Review Cannon EW-73 Lens Hood for 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S Lens

Strengths:

Added lens protection. Cuts down harsh sunlight from peripherals into lens. Can be stored in reverse on the lens, although this makes it difficult to use the zoom on the lens.

Weaknesses:

Must remove to store in camera case. Hood can create shadows in images if left on during built-in flash uses - must remember to remove before flash and macro images are taken.

Posted Nov 15, 2005 - I leave this hood on during all outside picture taking to cut down the unwanted light and protect the lens when I have the camera hung on my shoulder. The difficult part is remembering to take it off when I use the flash - it can ruin an otherwise nice photo with a harsh shadow. If the photographer knows they are going to take pictures with flash, they may want to leave it off the lens just in case. This is a good product overall and I would purchase it again.

3 Star Review Canon EW-73B Lens Hood

Strengths:

Well build, solid

Weaknesses:

Expensive

Posted Apr 2, 2006 - The Lens Hood is well build and well fit into my new Canon 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S SLR lens. It's made in Japan. But it's kind of expensive - $27. It should come with the 17-85mm EF-S lens. If it's not in use, just mount it reversed on the lens.

4 Star Review Lens hood for Canon 17-85 f/4-6.6 IS EF-S Lens

Strengths:

Lens hood for wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens

Weaknesses:

It should be included with a lens!!!

Posted Jan 19, 2006 - For me it is just a neccessary piece for equipment when shooting pictures outdoors as it helps with sun glare. I got it together with my Canon 20d and 17-85 EF-S lens. It was never a question if I need one. I also use it for protection. Some photographers use lens hoods instead of uv filters for protection. They claim a broken filter can only scratch a lens and a hood protects lens better from impact in case it is dropped. It's their theory; I just hope my camera will never be dropped...

5 Star Review EW-73B Lens Hood for Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens

Strengths:

High quality and does exactly what you'd expect.

Weaknesses:

High price.

Posted Dec 15, 2005 - First of all, this lens hood is pretty pricey at ~$30. The plastic is high quality with some "give", so I anticipate that it would be able to take some punishment without cracking. The interior is lined with a nice felt-like material. When storing the lens/camera, it's very easy to reverse the hood and twist it onto the lens - a definite bonus. Lastly, the hood does exactly what you'd expect: It reduces glare when photographing in brightly lit environments.
