Strengths:

Works nicely on my heavily loaded software and hardware environment without excessive registry entries and does not encrypt drives as McAfee does which removes operator control of drives.

Weaknesses:

NONE, but full scanning can take some time - but only because I have several million files some of which are quite large.

Posted Nov 29, 2003 - Norton has allways had a good product and offers free trials of many of their products beforehand and a 60 Day money back guarantee. I recommend buying the retail box versions for their excellent booklet that comes with the product unless you are experienced with the Norton product you purchase, but everyone should try the free trials at symantec.com first - thats what they are there for - so you will know what you want. Oh, and that booklet - will cover ANY problem you may encounter if your system is running properly to begin with. The user with the complaints should look for other problems in his computer or just go to the new McAfee VS 8 where they will really find something to complain about if they make a mistake or have an allready existing software problem. I strongly recommend SystemWorks Pro for its excellent program additions which can clean-up problems and make repairs far beyond virus scanning. The included Ghost is excellent and will copy drives to a DVD or multiple CD's for back-up.

Strengths:

The Norton Anti Virus program does what it is intended to do.Great program, with excellent antivirus protection. Norton offers excellent tech. support if needed on their anti- viral program . Norton

Weaknesses:

I've not found any. I've used the Norton programs from 2002 to this 2004 . It is fast and efficient , & doesn't cause the problems I had using Mc Afee anti-viral program.

Posted Dec 21, 2003 - I am very happy with Norton anti- viral systems. I have been using their programs for the last 2 years , & never had a problem with them. I do update them each year to stay current on their inprovments to system. I love the fact that my definitions auto load from their web site , & the program then works silently in background without interrupting my programs being used. Strengths:

Great program, great antivirus protection. great service available if needed from Norton on this product.

Weaknesses:

Program did not autostart. had to go to run and browse for setup folder.

Posted Dec 13, 2003 - I have Purchased both, the 2003 edition and the 2004 edition. The 2004 edition scans the computer faster and always checks for updates. No system crashes or hangups. Highly recommend this program over any other antivirus programs. Have not had any problems with software. Will buy Norton products again.

Posted Feb 2, 2004 - I have used several anti virus software packages. Norton is easier to use and performs as it claims. As far as I know it has caught and stopped every virus that my email had. No one can afford to be without virus protection and I think Norton is the best.

Great automatic virus protections and regular virus protection updates.

Weaknesses:

Sometimes upgrading to an NAV product of the same year will NOT allow you to continue virus updates.

Posted Jan 24, 2004 - Be sure you get a different version if you upgrade/renew. I have used NAV for several years and really enjoy the seemless behind-the-scenes protection, scans, and updates. Buying the product through Pricegrabber is an excellent way to reduce the cost, too.

Weaknesses:

took abnormally long for auto-protect to activate at startup. Same if not better protection can be had for less space on the old C drive, ie McAfee, Panda et al. A bit pricey.

Posted Aug 5, 2004 - Easy to install and use.Interface simple.Options laid out well with competent help and guidance for various settings and features. I thought Norton performed well against virusses, getting updates was a cinch. I have no idea what Norton's anti-spyware feature does because it sure does not prevent spyware from infiltrating your system. Nor does it pick it up during scans. I experienced no drag on my system using Norton, but then I have a 3.0 GHz. system. Unless you are a real Norton afficionado, there are some good alternatives to choose from depending on your priority. For the money, I would recommend Trend Micro PC-CILLIN which is close to Norton AV but also has a good no-bother firewall. Panda Titanium is also a good choice and like PC-CILLIN takes up less space on the hard-drive. For protection and money, I would go with Bit Defender with honorable mention going to McAfee and Kapersky. For those on a budget, I would choose from either Bit Defender or use the free and much-lauded Avast AV system which also takes up less space on the hard drive than Norton.

Many glitches in the system and will lock up you computer and must pay $35 to unlock or your computer will crash. Cannot download patch to fix until you pay support-does not work with cable service

Posted Nov 22, 2003 - Good co. needs a lot of improvments stick with 2003 and never instal parental control will cause computer to crash. I had to call support many times and pay $35 to get it all corrected and I still uninstalled it and went back to 2003

Posted Apr 6, 2004 - The product is just ok, nothing fab. If you like to talk to customer service, buy it. If you wish to actually let the product do what it is supposed to do, good luck!! I don't recommend it to anyone. I ordered the hard copy and had to settle for the download from Symantec Store because I needed an antivirus on a new build. I have yet to recieve my hard copy and that's been 4 months. I'll never do business with them again. Plus customer service "SUCKS".

Posted Sep 25, 2004 - I have had the blue screen of death, my monitor flashing, icons are unrecognizable and nothing but video problmes with NSW 2004 installed. I have the latest video drivers installed and when I uninstall NSW the problem goes away. I wasted my money!!!!

Sometimes scanning of opened files takes too long, causing other programs to wait; little or no protection from Trojans

Posted Dec 4, 2004 - I've used Norton AV for quite some time (4 versions now), and am pleased with its performance. If any viruses have penetrated any of my systems, I'm unaware of them. I like that Windows Security Center can automatically tell if Norton needs updating or if it's not yet running (only works on 2003 and above). Unfortunately, Norton AV is mostly a reactive program; that is to say, it mostly only protects against those threats it knows about in the virus definitions. If you get a virus that it's never heard of, you may be unprotected. But then, almost all antivirus programs are like this, and that should be fixed *ahem*. Always make sure you antivirus is up to date, no matter *what* program you have! Also, like other antivirus programs, this provides little protection against Trojan horse programs. So, if you want more complete protection, whether you buy Norton or any other antivirus program, get a Trojan program like TDS-3 at the very least. This is a minor issue, but--on my computer at least--once in a while, as I open a file, its automatic scanning of the contents takes a little longer than it should. Not sure what it is, but again, minor issue. None of these things are big enough to keep me from recommending Norton AV 2004. Even though it's not a *complete* security solution, it's definitely one of the very best antivirus programs out there. Just remember: no matter *what* antivirus you get, also get a firewall (ZoneAlarm and a router is better) and an anti-Trojan (TDS-3) if you want all-around protection, and always keep your programs up to date.

Posted Jul 6, 2004 - I think these reviews should list the operating systems the users has the product installed in. I installed this on WinXP first. Slowed system to a crawl and: 1. Windows Search would not work, 2. "Properties" for folders would not function, 3. I could not my CD/DVD rom. All of these worked when I removed the product after a few days. It took itself 95 minutes to uninstall. When I tried on Win98, printer configurations were affected and printers became unavailable. MS Word would not work unless the internet connection was live. The system was not slowed down as much as the WinXP installation, but experienced approx 50%- 75% slowdown with any file activities. The problems it caused on our home office network were less severe but way too time-consuming to correct. The problems in this area would have been enough to uninstall it. While the antivirus game is a moving target for all of us, the problems experienced here are certainly ones that should have been eliminated in the beta versions. I never could experience the benefits as the genuine problems kept me reciting "serenity now" for hours. This was the most destructive software I have ever installed.

Posted Jun 5, 2004 - This thing needs serious work to make it a viable antivirus solution. NAV2004 makes my p4 3.0 HT run like a Celeron! Performance degradation aside, it still needs work in detecting and removing anything that is not a standard virus. Symantec claims that this product protects you from ad-ware/spy-ware. HA! WHAT A JOKE. Also, it failed to catch a sub-7 trojan variant. If all you want is a somewhat reliable AV that eats all system resources, get this. Otherwise look elsewhere for protection

1 Star Review Please ignor Norton Complete Security reviews of less than a years useage.

Strengths:

Sounds all-comprehensive and useful from the Sales speil, but I should stick to their excellent antivirus product.

Weaknesses:

Uninstal problematic. Like Microsoft they do not like you uninstaling their features. Also their progs communicate frequently for their benefit using your on-line time and money.

Posted Feb 4, 2008 - It will not uninstal properly using Windows remove prog. It has no built in uninstal, and you must go to their web site and select from a myriad of confusing options in order to remove it. Trouble is you do not know this until you find that Windows Vista has not removed it properly, which means that their web site uninstal solutions will not work since the info you needed has been wiped out from using windows remove progs-without removing much else. I know of people who have spent hours on the phone to try to resolve this without recieving satisfaction. This is a Major compliant. I have tested other products after using Norton repair, only to find even the freebies seem to work much more effectively. I have tried Norton over many years and their registry repair still causes problems even if you are trying to use experienced common sense about what to delete. Please be wary of companies who seem to provide all the bells and whistles who should stick to what they do well, in this case antivirus allone.
