1 Star Review Poor performance and slows down computer

Strengths:

easy to install and use

Weaknesses:

uses a lot of memory and slows down computer. Not effective in dealing with adware/malware. Late with sotware updates

Posted Feb 26, 2008 - After installation of the McAfee software my computer slowed up significantly. I have also had pproblems with large numbers of different adware/software trojans which were not picked up by McAffee.Information received from them said that they could not deal with Vundo variant at the time.I had to use Superantispyware and Adware 2007 to remove over 120 infections missed by McAfee. It was a bad mistake to change from Norton to McAfee after 10years, I am going back to Norton. I would not recommend this software to anyone

3 Star Review Total Protection For Your Computer

Strengths:

12-in-1 Prevention and Protection. Good price for what it has to offer.

Weaknesses:

It slows the computer down.

Posted Jan 25, 2008 - Overall, McAfee Total Protection is a decent product. It is affordable, offers a lot of protection and is easy to use and install. The only downside is that I have noticed that it does slow my computer down a little bit, especially when first starting it up. Sometimes, webpages are slow to load, which didn't seem to happen before installing the software.

1 Star Review It's No More Secure than a Piece of Cardboard Used as a Roof during a Rain Storm

Strengths:

None that I've seen.

Weaknesses:

Makes your PC slower than a dinosaur caught in a tar pit and is blind as a bat when it comes to detecting and stopping malware.

Posted 1 year ago - I only used McAfee because it was well-known and offered for free with Comcast's Internet service. Not long after using it, my PC became infected with vicious malware that would open up Internet Explorer against my will on Start Up, and deluge me with all kinds of pop up boxes claiming to offer a product. After repeatedly scanning with McAfee, and it not detecting any infections, I called both Comcast, then McAfee. After having a McAfee agent do a remote scan of my PC and still finding nothing, I was then told I'd have to pay about $30 for level 2 tech support. I told him "No...I'm not paying for something that's already being paid for through my Comcast bill, and is supposed to protect me in the first place.". After repeated East Indian accents of "I'm sorry sir, but...", I terminated the call. I then tried PC Tools Spyware Doctor, which easily found 77 different infections on my PC (the ones that McAfee missed). I took the time to send an email to both Comcast and McAfee of a detailed list of every single one in the hopes McAfee would learn to identify these threats. I never received so much as an automated response or the slightest "thank you" or "we'll look into it" from McAfee. I've since uninstalled McAfee's software and use PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Virus Protection, which I highly recommend. I haven't had any problems since, and Spyware Doctor doesn't slow my PC down either. If you sign up with an internet provider and they offer you free service from McAfee, just say "No."

3 Star Review McAfee works OK

Strengths:

Works OK. Probably not as good as Norton but it doesn't have Nortons faults with delaying or stopping computer opertations either. No virus has ever gotten by, in the 3 year I used McAfee.

Weaknesses:

Tech support is from India now, used to be the USA or UK so that is not very good now, but OK.

Posted Feb 20, 2008 - McAfee rebate vendor is always trying not to pay the rebates. Each time for the last 3 years they have rejected it for some reason that made no sense. But when you make a complaint, they will end up paying it, like they should have in the first place. I like the product and it has a Maintenance section for the computer, called McAfee QuickClean. Will take out the files that you don’t need and clean up the lost file fragments, the registry, cookies and ActiveX files you don’t need, plus others. So that is nice to run once a month.

3 Star Review Provides peace of mind, but at a cost

Strengths:

Lots of integrated security tools providing compatability.

Weaknesses:

Major resource hog - CPU and memory.

Posted Dec 20, 2007 - Tested on XP. The plethora of tools is great, especially for the price. The fact that they're all "in" one program is nice too, as it consolidates status icons and they all work together happily. Running all 12 things at once however does require a lot of memory and CPU power. I suggest turning some features off, as they're included in basic Windows tools anyway. The biggest thing this product provides is antivirus, and that's really the only thing I find this to be useful for (when looking at performance anyway). The backup utility is nice too "set it and forget it!", but also utilizes a good deal of hard-drive space. Overall, I'd recommend this for someone who just wants to click 'Install' once and be done with it all. It's easy to use and does what it says - just be prepared for a slowdown with almost everything else you do.

3 Star Review McAfee Total Protection 2008

Strengths:

ok

Weaknesses:

may has problems with installation

Posted Feb 27, 2008 - I installed McAfee Total Protection 2008 to make a try when boring with bulky Norton Antivirus. I have Spybot Search and Destroy in system and McAfee won't run the installation well until I removed Spybot S&D. You have the option to choose which feature to install which was nice to save some disk. I like Site Advisor Plus which gives lots information on sites. The protection is good so far.

4 Star Review Mcafee total protection 2008, not a bad one

Strengths:

It is a all in one protection. Less expensive.

Weaknesses:

Since it is a all in one, so there is a problem of the resource usage. It is often causing system slow if you turn on all the features for protection.

Posted Feb 15, 2008 - Overall it is not bad. I know it is not the one everyone likes it but for the sake of security it works quite well for protecting your family computers and it is for 3 PCs. Definitely you can turn off some of the features to alleviate the computer load and you should be happy for bothof the protection and computer speed. Anyway, it is a big brand name and you should not need to worry about the security issues on your computers. This is important and this is the reason you get it. If your computer is too old you may have to spend little fortune to upgrade it to get your system speed.

3 Star Review OK software

Strengths:

none

Weaknesses:

hang down the system

Posted Jan 20, 2008 - The program was working OK until it hung up my computer and I had to reboot it. The 2008 version does come with a new feature which is site advisor plus. This can make up the slowed-down system problem. The program would get higher rating if McAfee could get rid of

5 Star Review Good alternative to Norton

Strengths:

Usually can be found cheaper than Norton if you look around. Seems less resource intensive.

Weaknesses:

None really.

Posted Jan 20, 2008 - I picked this up because it was a good deal in comparison to a similar Norton product. It feels as though my machine isn't bogged down much by it. Interface is pretty intuitive, and I feel satisfied with my purchase. I would recommend.

3 Star Review Good but slow

Strengths:

Good detection rate, 3 - user, comprehensive coverage

Weaknesses:

Resource intensive, slows down your computer

Posted Jan 5, 2008 - The McAfee Total Protection 2008 w/ Site Advisor Plus - 3-User offers good real-time protection against viruses and other malware, with detection rates better than Symantec Antivirus, but not as good as others such as NOD32 or even free ones like Avast. It is also resource intensive, slowing down your computer noticeably, especially during startup (FYI I didn't enable startup scan). The only good thing about this is that it has a 3-user license which allows you to put one of 3 different computer/laptops.

4 Star Review Great security software.

Strengths:

Smaller footprint than competitors (takes up less hard drive space); also works on Windows 2000, unlike competitors.

Weaknesses:

The interface is kind of confusing at first because you have all these security features before you. Takes a while to understand what it all means.

Posted Jan 2, 2008 - McAfee Total Protection includes antivirus, antispyware, antiphishing, and antirootkit protection, and wireless security. It takes up less hard drive space than Norton and MS Live OneCare. It also works on Windows 2000, if anyone out there cares. It didn\\\\\\\'t seem to bog down my Pentium 4 system much. The interface is kind of confusing at first because you have all these security features before you. It takes a while to understand what it all means. I would recommend it as I am satisfied with my purchase.

3 Star Review Does what it claims

Strengths:

McAfee being a reputable name in Internet security products, 3-user license, regular updates

Weaknesses:

slows down computers

Posted Dec 28, 2007 - McAfee is a well known name in Internet security. So you can trust this piece of software will keep your computer safe. Since many families have more than one computer, the 3-user license is useful. However, while it does a good job keep your computer safe, it also significantly slows down your machine. It's not ideal for a gaming or older machine. For someone who doesn't know much about computers, this is a good, idiot-proof Internet security program.

4 Star Review works well for me

Strengths:

3 licences to protect the desktop and laptops at home

Weaknesses:

consume lots of cpu cycles

Posted Dec 22, 2007 - Honestly there is no suprise here. The software does the job but it slows down the machine. As always, the newer version is always slower than the older version. It is supposed to be more powerful though.

3 Star Review Total Protection 2008 w/ Site Advisor Plus - 3-User (Full Product)

Strengths:

Covers all needs for total protection online and offline

Weaknesses:

Slows down your computer

Posted Dec 19, 2007 - One of the best programs and works efficiently. Great deal if you can get the MIR at the time you purchase it. I would suggest a different antivirus program if that is all you are looking for. If you want an "everything" program, then this is it for sure!

4 Star Review very good pc protection

Strengths:

very user friendly, instant updates, pc is well protected from viruses, spam, hackers etc.

Weaknesses:

occasionally slows down my pc

Posted Dec 18, 2007 - Since I bought my PC 3 years ago it came with the McAfee protection package and I was very pleased with the performance. My friends and other family members have different internet security provider and we compare it with McAfee and we think McAfee is at par with Bit Guard, Kasperski and Norton but for the price we are getting for McAfee after rebate ,this is the best deal in the market.
