Strengths:multiple charging rates, multiple charging modes, informative LCD displays for each battery, TEST mode to measure battery capacity, REFRESH mode to recondition weak cells
Weaknesses:will not accept some weak cells, limited to AA and AAA NiCad and NiMH batteries
Posted 1 year ago - I have begun to assemble a modest collection of NiMH cells over the years, and clearly some last longer than others, but I have never been able to know exactly which ones are failing - a simple voltmeter just can't measure battery capacity.
I have always been concerned that my Ray-O-Vac rapid charger has not been the best for my batteries' health - the batteries get fairly warm and stay warm even during trickle charging. And I know heat is not a battery's friend in the long run.
The BC900 has given me the opportunity to really assess the state of all my batteries. The TEST mode alone is worth the cost of the charger - it charges, discharges, and recharges the battery, and then displays the Ampere-hour capacity and charged voltage of the battery at the end of the recharging period.
The REFRESH mode is sort of an extended TEST mode - the charger runs the battery through multiple charge/recharge cycles until the capacity has reached a maximum - perfect for removing the memory effect of NiCads or refreshing NiMH cells that haven't been used in a while.
The charger also allows you to set the charging current at several increments - as low as 200 mA for the safest, most battery-friendly charge rate up to 1800 mA for the fastest charge possible.
Each cell bay can be programmed independently of the others, too - so you can test or refresh cells in some slots at a high charge rate, while simultaneously recharging other cells at a slow 200 mA rate.
The unit comes with a canvas carrying case, 4 AA NiMH's, 4 AAA NiMH's, 4 D-Cell adapters, and 4 C-Cell adapters (to use a AA battery in a D-Cell slot, you first put it in the C-Cell adapter, then place the C-Cell adapter in the D-Cell adapter - almost like one of those Russian nesting dolls!).
I bought mine for $39.99 with free shipping at Amazon.com, and it is well worth the cost to manage your rechargeable battery inventory!
