Brass instrument mute-pickup system. Made by Yamaha Yamaha Silent Brass is a complete, soundproofed electronic studio small enough to clip on your belt! The Silent Brass system consists of a pickup mute, stereo earphones, and a digital processor . With it, you can blow with all your might and produce hardly a whisper. Inside the earphones, you will be enveloped in sound so rich and full that you'll feel like you're standing in the middle of a concert hall! Small, light, portable and convenient The Silent Brass module is smaller than a cassette tape and weighs about as much. It fits easily into a shirt pocket and can be attached to the player's belt, if desired. This makes the new Silent Brass systems incredibly portable and convenient. Great sound The sound from this next generation system has been greatly improved over the previous generation. The hiss has been greatly reduced, allowing the player to hear more of himself and less noise. User-friendly controls and sleek design. minimize

2 Star Review performs as advertised but a slight disappointment

Strengths:

Cuts playing volume down significantly as advertised; mute can be used by itself without plugging it in.

Weaknesses:

Mute creates a lot of resistance and alters high-register response; poor quality microphone.

Posted 1 year ago - I have been using this mute for years (without the electronics) when practicing at night or at other times when I do not wish to disturb others. However the resistance the mute generates alters the "feel" of playing compared to the resistance of your instrument during performance, so I do not recommend it for regular practice. Also the mute changes the playing characteristics of the instrument in the high register. The microphone "pickup" in the mute is also not particularly high quality, so the mute is not recommended for applications where you want to mic your horn (recording, amplification, effects processing, etc.) The caveat to this review is that mine is an older model and Yamaha may have improved on the product, but I've based my comments partially on feedback from my section-mates who have used more recent models of the product and had similar experiences.

5 Star Review Silent Night

Strengths:

Really does make your instrument sounds very quiet compared to others.

Weaknesses:

Still sounds like you are playing with a mute (kind of unavoidable anyways).

Posted Sep 18, 2005 - The silent brass system was very easy to set up; the box stated all you had to do was plug the thing in, a claim it kept. Barely audible to those in the same room when using the system, it allows instrument practice in a family home without disturbing those around you. The sound resembles playing with a mute through the headphones because of the way the system works, but you can make it as loud as you want with the volume control. The echo feature is kind of nice too, it alleviates that muted sound a little bit.

5 Star Review Silent Brass System

Strengths:

Allows playing and practice of your instrument without disturbing others.

Weaknesses:

Sounds muted at first but after getting use to the system things improve.

Posted Mar 31, 2007 - Follow the instructions and you can not miss. Really keeps others from being disturbed allowing the music player a chance to study their art form. The student has the volume control so they can get a feel for the sound of the notes they are playing through the headphones. Makes practice pleasant for the entire neighborhood.
