Excellent budget camcorder!

Strengths:

Price! Ease of use!

Weaknesses:

Audio not so great!

Posted Feb 27, 2008 - I got this camcorder from Sears on clearance, and I couldn't be happier. For the money it is an excellent value for a middle of the road camcorder. My only gripe is that the audio is a little noisy, but besides that, it is a bargain, especially if you can find it below MSRP!

good for home videos or casual use

Strengths:

decent video for the price

Weaknesses:

audio (has background noise from camera in quiet settings), lag in focus when zooming in/out

Posted May 5, 2007 - I purchased this for general usage on trips and on campus. I chose this particular camcorder over similar ones for its mic input capabilities since it would be use to record practice sessions as well. Camcorder is fairly easy to use, fits comfortable in hand and buttons within easy reach even though my hands are on the small side, LCD display can also be swiveled so the people being recorded can see themselves. Overall, I think this camcorder is great for casual use, but don't expect great video or audio quality (given the price, I think these are reasonable expectations).

Nice for the Price

Strengths:

Very easy to use, video looks great, mic jack, firewire, reasonably priced

Weaknesses:

none so far

Posted Feb 12, 2008 - Bought this as a replacement for my old VH-C camcorder, the ZR800 seems so small and light! Video quality is great, no problems with motor noise when playing back thru the computer or tv. Very easy to use-love the joystick control for the menus. Would be nice if it came with a mini DV tape in the box, seems silly to not include one since you can't use the camera without one! So far I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Easy to use --- great low price

Strengths:

Cheap --- And you can not go wrong for the price!

Weaknesses:

You need a Firewire card and cable $70. Microsoft provides the necessary drivers in the XP OS and minimal capture software called "Moviemaker".

Posted 1 year ago - I am a new camcorder user and so have no practical experience to bias my opinion one way or another. I bought the Canon because it has facilities for an external microphone. First on the matter of tape drive noise: yes I can hear it if I put the unit up to my ear. But no noticeable noise comes up on actual movie clips when played back through my computer. Second, they claim you can interconnect and capture clips to your computer. I am not too pleased with the tape system but considering the price of the unit, I think it is a bargain. Finally, I have become aware through short experience with the unit that the ergonometric design for the right hand was very well thought out. Your thumb easily controls on/off and tape transport functions. It is really easy to use, at least for right handed users. All considered, I am satisfied with the product. Of course, if it dies next week, I will have a different opinion.

Decent camcorder

Strengths:

It takes good quality video

It doesn't work very well in low light

Posted Jun 2, 2008 - This is a decent camcoder worthy of its price. At the price below $200, you get all kinds of features such as image stabilizer, 35x optical zoom, smooth zoom control, worry-free shot control. Its battery last a reasonable period of time after fully charged. Its hand-hold size makes things very convenient. The video quality is excellent. The only thing it doesn't work very well is in low light.

A low cost camcorder with great quality

Strengths:

It's small, easy to use and has a lot of features

Weaknesses:

light vision is not very good

Posted May 7, 2008 - Canon produces good quality cameras/camcorders. This is one of them. It's not costly at all but it does have lots of features with 37X. it's small to fit your hand and all buttons are very easy to reach and you adjust it to different angle very easily. The quality is great with no noise in microphone. Its light vision pic is not very good though.

Posted Apr 4, 2008 - When my old Canon MiniDV broke (tape loading problem) my options were to pay to have it fixed, upgrade to HD, or replace it. With such a low price on this model, the choice was easy. Excellent value and no complaints regarding image quality. The small size allows it to travel easily and built in lens cover is a nice touch. I don't particularly like the joystick control, but it just may take some getting used to for people with stubby fingers.
