Very Good camera for starters

Strengths:

Light weight and compact. Easy to use and very good quality video for the price. Very good picture with good lighting and when use outside. The image stabilization is great.

Weaknesses:

slightly loud motor. Need good lighting in order to get high quality video. Plastic looks a bit cheap.

Posted May 15, 2007 - Over all , I like this camera. This is my first camera . It's perfect for first video camera buyer who want a simple starter camera with some of advance features but don't want to spend lots of money.

Posted Jan 10, 2008 - This would be fun to use. Very small and hopefully it will work well. I just bought this and dont know how its going to work, but found out this is a good camera and very easy to operate.

Strengths:

Simple to learn and operate, very light, convenient to carry.

Weaknesses:

Resolution is not high. Buttons seems not delicate. The battery is on the surface of camcorder, looks bad.

Posted May 23, 2007 - Though this camcorder seems not in a very high quality, considering its price, the feature-rich camcorder is a bargain. I think it is suitable for whom is beginning to make a video.

poor quality and worse customer service

Posted 1 year ago - we enjoyed the camera for about a year and a half until it stopped working. Still images are poor but worse is the quality of the unit. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal but the Canon customer service did nothing but try to over charge us for fixing it. After using it to video maybe 60 minutes worth of tape the camera stopped working. I don't think I will be purchasing any more canon products

Decent Beginner's Camcorder

Strengths:

Good picture quality, easy to use, menu and joystick works well, good zoom

Weaknesses:

loud tape motor, no microphone input, does not come with firewire cable, still pictures too low resolution

Posted Apr 29, 2008 - Watch out for the motor, I read reviews complaining about thinking it wouldn't be a big deal but its really annoying. nothing is worse than watcing a home movie with a constant hum, gear noise on top of it due to the tap motor. serious design flaw in my opinion. If i knew it was this bad I woudlnt have purchased this model. if sound isn't important to you, rest of the camera is nice, good pictures, widescreen or 4:3 choices and easy to use. just wish it came with a fireware cable instead of a usb cable, especially since the still picture ability is worthless due to the such low resolution of the pictures.

Weaknesses:

Not good picture if the lighting's not great. Feels a bit cheap.

Posted Apr 23, 2008 - This is a great camera for the price - there's not really much you can get for around $200 and as long as you make sure you're shooting in good lighting, you're going to have a great picture. My biggest complaint is that the picture is mediocre in bad lighting - but I guess you can't get everything you want at this price.

Decent Camcorder

Strengths:

Everything seems to work and work well on this. It's fairly easy to navigate, very good zoom lens, and has decent battery life.

Weaknesses:

Picture quality under weak light conditions isn't great.

Good Camcorder but still images are not very clear

Strengths:

Easy to use menu system, impressive color in good lighting, built-in lens cover, low price.

Weaknesses:

No accessory shoe or microphone input, low-resolution still photos, not enough stabilization at maximum zoom, poor low-light performance.

Posted Mar 9, 2008 - I like the feature of taking pictures while viewing movies, but the still image quality is poor. Also, when filming to the SD card the movie is very small. I do like the firewire and the 35X zoom is great. I use sports mode most often. It would have been nice to have a higher MP camera feature. I turned off the image stabilization as it reduced the quality of the still images.

XR830 miniDV Camcorder

Strengths:

Lightweight, easy to use, great quality videos.

Weaknesses:

Battery does not last very long

Posted Mar 1, 2008 - This miniDV recorder replaced an old VHS-C unit. Overall I am very pleased for the first month I have owned it. Easy to use controls and an impressive 35X zoom are great features. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to take family videos. For the low price and Canon quality this is tough to beat!

Great entry level miniDV camcorder

Strengths:

For under $200, this is a great unit. 35x optical zoom, comfortable grip, very nice video quality.

Weaknesses:

This camcorder doesn't seem to work very well in low light conditions. It works, but the video quality isn't nearly as good.

Posted Feb 5, 2008 - Very nice camcorder for a sub-$200 price. MiniDV digital tapes are inexpensive, yet the video quality seems very good to me--given the camera and the media are so affordable. I like the way the buttons and controls are laid out and everything seems very easy and comfortable to use. The LCD too is very nice and bright. I would highly recommend this camcorder if you don't have a lot of money to spend, or you need something to create youtube videos or similar. The only things I don't like are that it doesn't seem to create very good quality video in low light conditions, and the viewfinder seems a bit small and difficult to use (for those of us that don't always want to use the lcd). But overall, a great buy for the price!

Entry-level affordable minidv camcorder

Posted Jan 21, 2008 - I am a first-time camcorder user who used cameras a lot. I bought this camcorder is because it is less expensive and I need to have a platform to step into the realm of higher end camcorders. And this camcorder is the right choice for me. After a couple of days’ trial, I found it’s easy to operate and offers functions and quality of pictures that satisfy my needs. Its 16:9 screen mode is a plus which I can use it to show my footages on my wide screen TV. I didn’t have many complaints about this camcorder as it comes at a bargain price. The only negative thing I would say is its poor indoor video quality compared with outdoors. But for someone who is not going to shoot in low-light a lot, this camcorder shall be a great choice.
