5 Star Review Great Unit

Strengths:

EQ, NAV, 4v preouts, options, bluetooth sounds great, multizone feature, time correction.. many more

Weaknesses:

No active bouncing EQ while playing music... if this is a weakness.

Posted May 29, 2008 - I am a proffesional installer and this unit has it all. The sound quality at 4v preouts is great. Nav works perfect (above reviewer obviously does not have a correctly installed or defective unit). Hard drive works great with good folder browsing.

3 Star Review Very close... but not perfect.

Strengths:

Lots and lots of features: Navigation, Bluetooth, DVD, Tuner. Expandable: HD Radio, XM, Sirius, FM Traffic, Relay Switches. Easily installed. Large screen.

Weaknesses:

Interface could needs to be updated. Bluetooth doesn't sound that great. Physical buttons are tiny.

Posted 1 year ago - I did a lot of research before buying this unit and overall it delivers pretty much everything most people would need/want in an in-dash unit. However, in this price range and being Kenwood's top-of-the-line, I expected it to be pretty close to perfect, but it's not. First, this system takes about 30 seconds to fully boot up, which compared to other systems with this many features it is really fast (The latest Pioneer model take well over two minutes), but the 30 second startup is still nonetheless a little annoying. Secondly, the interface is pretty archaic looking for something designed in 2008, my 1999 GPS system looked better than this. The new Pioneers have a far more slick looking interface. Thirdly, the Garmin Navigation interface could be a plus or a minus. I personally feel the Garmin interface is a little too simplified, but at the same time it makes it extremely readable. Another small, but annoying thing about the Garmin interface is that when you are avigating to a location it will tell you your ETA but it will NOT tell you the current time. Also since Garmin created the interface, the information for your music comes up an an overlayed image (that often blocks out on-screen buttons) in ugly text reminiscent of an Atari 2600. Comparatively, the new Pioneers shows all the street names, has the ETA and current time, and will show you all the song information as well as a little thumbnail of the album. Fourthly, the physical buttons are the size of watch buttons and are indistinguishable from each other, which more of less makes the impossible to use unless you look at the stereo. Finally, the bluetooth is a nice included feature and does pair up quite easily and consistently, however for me I could barely hear anything anyone was saying and the other person on the phone could barely understand what I was saying. This however maybe a problem that's more related to my phone (HTC Touch) and the placement of the microphone in my car (on the steering column, as recommended by Kenwood). Don't get me wrong, this is probably the most feature rich in-dash GPS system out there but just don't expect it to be perfect.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

not much

Posted 1 year ago - well let me tell you that I have owned both the 90bt premier and the 8120 excelon and by far the kenwood has its $h!t together. pioneer nav straight sucks!! garmen all the way. the 90bt has a lot of nice feature but they really don't work and the ipod interface sucks, kenwood is smoking fast and reliable. this is the best unit out right now!! still waiting for the azantek!!

3 Star Review Solid features but a bit rushed

Strengths:

It has it ALL

Weaknesses:

Garmin nav is not up to the quality of a Garmin Nuvi Other party on a BT call says it is bad quality

Posted 1 year ago - Kenwood partnered with Parrot for the BT and Garmin for the Nav, but those two features are not close to the stand alone units. I hope it is a software issue or I will return the unit. The Garmin Nav works fine for me, but lacks features of a 300.00 Nuvi such as multiple voices, custom POI alerts (all you get is a "ding ding" although I have loaded the MP3s for the "Warning Speed Trap" alerts (same POI file plays fine on my Nuvi). The screen size and the font size of the Garmin on the unit is clearly a hacked port since it wastes real estate all over the place. Still it is a solid unit and I look forward to firmware and software updates (they better move fast though).

2 Star Review Kenwood DNX8120 Great with some problems

Strengths:

Audio/Video

Weaknesses:

GPS and Telephone Bluetooth connection

Posted May 22, 2008 - Kenwood did a good job packing many beautiful features in a nice unit. the DNX8120 is mighty powerful in many ways. However, I think the unit was rushed out before most of the software bugs are ironed out. The audio/Video part works great. but the GPS and the Bluetooth telephone connection have some problems. The Garmin GPS loses satellite reception periodically even in open areas on Los Angeles freeways. Also, the unit starts sometimes with the setup screen as if it is the first time you are running the program. You lose all your favorite POI and the unit initial setup. It is annoying to having to input the time zone, date, and other setup features few times a day. Also, the voice is choppy at best. The telephone has very poor audio quality. Your voice to the other party is very bad quality and very choppy. Useless. I am waiting when Kenwood and Garmin harryup a software or firmware fix otherwise I am going to return my unit to Kenwood.
