Bluetooth 1.2, 8 Hours Talk, 200 Hours Standby - MPN: HS850
Strengths: Long range, light weight, long battery life, easy setup, device compatibility
Weakness: Audio quality, fit on the ear
I've had this Motorola HS850 Bluetooth headset for a few days now and am generally pleased with it. This is the very latest generation of Moto's headsets and doesn't suffer from some of the weaknesses others have reported about earlier incarnations, specifically the transmission range. While users of previous generations complained that they had to keep the phones in their pocket in order to connect to the headset, I've been able to roam close to 30 feet (the nominal limit of Bluetooth links) from my V710 Moto phone and still maintain connectivity. It helps to have line-of-sight to the phone, but I've had it transmit successfully through a couple of walls, too.
That's not to say that the headset sounds too great in these long distance situations. It definitely sounds best when the phone and headset are within an arm's distance of each other. At longer distances the audio quality gets progressively more gravelly, and in fact it will maintain the Bluetooth link even when the audio is completely unintelligible. This is a good thing, I guess, because if you stray too far you can simply move back within range instead of having to reestablish the connection.
The audio quality definitely has an effect on the vice recognition capabilities of the V710. I've found that I sometimes have to repeat a command - especially in environments with high ambient noise - and the "digit dial" mode is much less reliable than it was previously, and may need some training with this headset. Name dial mode is more reliable but still takes retries sometimes.
The fit on my ear is not as secure as I would like, but mostly the ear hook just FEELS loose and hasn't really been in danger of falling off. I wish it had, like my Jabra headset, a moldable-wire ear hook; instead it's a one-size-fits-all hook using a kind of floppy plastic, and the speaker sits outside and against your ear with a little rubber cushion. It can be configured for left or right ears.
That said, it is VERY comfortable and extremely light weight, and yesterday I wore it around almost the entire afternoon, several times forgetting that it was on until an incoming call rang in my ear. While you're on a call the blue LED flashes every few seconds, but you can turn it off on a per-call basis if you think it looks too conspicuous in public.
After giving it a couple of hours' initial charge as recommended in the manual, I talked on it quite a bit yesterday, much longer than the phone itself would have run on its own battery power. I haven't run it down completely, so I can't say if it gets the full 8 hours as claimed. One of the great things about using this headset with a Moto phone is that they can share the same charger (though not simultaneously) - unfortunately, you can't use it while the headset is charging.
Setting this headset up was extremely straightforward and took about 30 seconds: I put it into "pairing mode", discovered it with my Moto V710 and then used the PIN to pair the two devices. The process of pairing the HS850 with my Mac G4 PowerBook was equally straightforward, and I was easily able to get all the Mac's audio output (in mono) routed through the headset; likewise, the Mac was able to use the headset's microphone for audio input. I'd say that's pretty impressive device compatibility!

TopWell, I read all the nice reviews, but I am really frustrated with my headset (hs850) you cant talk on it for longer than 10 minutes, the charge whimps out by 11:00 am after only a few hours at work. Seems I was robbed. Feels to lose on my ear, like its about to fall off. Real dissappointed with this headset, I plan to get my money back.
I'm confused by the time comment. I agree it feels loose on the ear, almos like it's going tofall off. But I've gotten used to the fit. I talk on my headset for well over an hour straight, then make other calls. I have been over 30' from my phone (Motorola e815) and still had connection, though starts to get noisy at that distance.
I thought the fit of the Jabra 250 or 500 would be nice and the users I've read agree but say they loose connection at 5-15". That would irritate me, and the Jabra 250 is throw away whe the battery dies. Not replaceable. All-in-all this is a good headset but I think it should have an earbud. People on the other end get feedback of their own voice because the mic picks up from the speaker and sends it back to them. Reducing volume helps some for them and none really compain about it.
It's a keeper, I get good range, long battery life and good stable connection with my phone.

I got my HS850 headset from a friend and didn't get a manual with it. HOW do I get it in 'pairing' mode
Strengths: Battery life, turns on quickly
Weakness: Same as all bluetooth headsets. People have trouble hearing me, I have trouble hearing them.
Walking around the house this is great! You flip open the boom and it's on...not much of a wait at all. It's light and comfortable. If I'm in the car with all the road noise, I have some trouble hearing. And if you turn the volume up all the way, its too much for the tiny speaker. It distorts and rattles.

TopI can't seem to connect my HS850 bt headset to my Motorola A1000.It's been giving me sleepless night. HELP
Strengths: Weight, battery life, easy setup, and device compatibility should be given, they are not weaknesses here but are definitely not strengths either.
Weakness: Poor comfort and terrible sound quality give a well-known brand a black eye (and sore ear)
I purchased this headset at the Verizon store along with my brand new Treo 700p and was very excited to finally have bluetooth. This first experience has been so poor that after the 5th day of use I went back to using my old jabra wired headset that I have used with my Treo 600 for a couple of years.
I have now done some reading and educated myself more on these headsets, and clearly there are better choices for this price and form-factor. The shape of the ear hook is designed for small ears, and is not adjustable in any way. It is also made of hard plastic so if your ear is not the same shape as the designer's model, you will feel it. Second, the speaker is flush with the surface of the headset, meaning that the whole device is pressing against your ear, rather than fitting comfortably within the shape of the ear. This is also not adjustable, and keeps the speaker well outside the ear meaning when there is any background noise you will find yourself pressing the headset to your ear to minimize nearby noise. This would be a good idea except that the large hang-up button is placed prominently on that side of the headset.
None of this would be such a problem if I could actually communicate with the person I'm calling. The speaker volume is weak, and full of clicks and pops from static. I've gotten reports that the sound from the boom mic is tinny when I call.
It also lost the pairing once with my Treo when the headset ran out of batteries. Once recharged I had to delete the pairing from the Treo and reconnect the headset. Don't know if that's the headset's fault, though.

TopStrengths: Lightweight, small size, comfortable, long battery life, charges quickly, excellent voice quality-both incoming and outgoing, ease-of use, universal Motorola charger
Although I have not tried similar units, I highly recommend this unit. I bought one for myself and my wife, so I've experienced both calls I make as well as heard the voice quality when my wife uses hers. I've had the BlueTooth headset for about a month now and have gotten to experience it's pro's and con's. The 850 is an excellent choice, and I had considered an 810, and an 820. The advantage of the 810 and 850 is that the unit is essentially turned off when the boom is closed, meaning that it is not consuming battery. I chose the 850 over the 810 due to the longer battery life. It takes about 2 hrs to fully charge and indicates it's charged when the light goes out.
The unit connected with my Motorola Bluetooth phone without issues, and it re-establishes the connection each time you open and close the boom. This process takes about 2 seconds, so that when the phone rings, by the time you open the boom and are ready to speak, it's on the 2nd or third ring, which is perfect.
In my conversations with numerous people, the voice quality is excellent. I was a bit worried that the mouth-to-mike distance would mean the mike was super sensitive and therefore picked up a lot of background noise. The mike doesn't pick up much besides your voice, so clearly Motorola thought that issue through. Because the headset completely covers your ear, the incoming voice is also quite clear. If you don't get the angle quite right (i.e. the mike is not close to the cheek), the outgoing voice is fairly low volume, making it difficult to hear.
I like the comfort the unit provides, as it completely covers my ear. Other units which require insertion into the ear have always been problematic, because one earbud simply doesn't fit all ears. The over the ear hanger is quick and comfortable. I do still struggle a bit with getting the angle it rests on just right, and as I mentioned above, it can be hard for the other caller to hear you if it's not positioned right.
My only beef with the unit itself is that it occasionally makes funny beeps and it's often hard to figure out why it's beeping. Other con's are more related to my phone/Motorola software than this unit itself. I will mention them, though, because I suspect all Motorola phones behave this way.
First, the battery life of your phone is substantially reduced when using Bluetooth. I typically get ~50% of the advertised talk time out of my phone when using Bluetooth. Second, the phone seems to not realize that this is a headset, and thus it doesn't change it's "Theme" in the same way as if you plug in a wired headset. For example, I typical use my phone in "Silent" mode, no beeps, vibrating ringer, etc. When I use a headset, it's usually in a noisy environment, so I would like it to automatically switch to the "Loud" theme. It doesn't do that like it does with a wired headset. So what really annoys me, is when you open the boom to make a call, press the voice dial button and speak a name, if the phone doesn't hear it right, you don't get any prompting that it didn't receive it. You end up in the middle of a street saying "MOM" trying to get the phone to dial your mom.
Overall, this is the best headset I ever used, and as long as you plug your phone in to charge every night, you'll have a superb combination.

TopStrengths: Sound Quality/Responsiveness
Weakness: Power Saving Features
Do not buy this headset if you are wanting to use it with the Treo 650. If you do, the headset take about 8-12 seconds to connect and most people will hang up by then. I thought it was the headset but after dumping the new Treo and getting a Motorola A1000 phone, I can say, "I love this headset!".
The convenience is immeasurable. Touch the button on the side once for voice-dialing, automatically answer your calls, and drive and work with both hands while talking. My phone never stops ringing. Before I had to put my customers on speakerphone so I could continue to type, install network equipment or pull network cable through some business's drop ceiling. Now, my conversations are private and I don't have to interact manually with my phone.
The only caveat I have with this headset is it's power saving features. Through anecdotal evidence, myself and others have issue with the headset going into some sleep/power saving mode. On occasion, the headset will not pick up a call unless you press the button on the headset - very infrequent and minor inconvenience.
Also, it is so natural to wear that you forget that you have to have the mobile phone with you. I'll leave it on my desk while in the middle of a call and by the time I reach the other end of my home or office, I'll remember I don't have my phone with me because the sound quality starts to fade - but we're talking waaaaay more than 30 feet.
If I had to buy another one, I'd get the same model.

TopStrengths: Very clear, Holds it's charge well, Comfortable - stays on your ear
Weakness: None
I have an 810 and purchased this 850 for my wife. It is a better unit than the 810 in that it is clearer and it holds a charge much longer. My wife uses her 850 at work and wears it almost all day. It is comfortable for her but so is the 810. They are both good products and if one needs a longer charge on the unit, the 850 is the one to purchase.

TopThank you for the comparison between the 810 and 850. Exactly what I was looking for. I feel the 810 drains my battery so much
I have a 810. It has worked great.
This 850 has very poor quality of sound in comparison.
Strengths: Very good Bluetooth connectivity Very comfortable on the ear, I sometimes forget that I'm wearing it. Very good battery life. I have never experienced a low battery condition.
Weakness: Like most Bluetooth headsets, the volume isn't loud enough to hear easily when in a noisy environment. The volume controls work well, but I can't imagine anyone would want to turn the volume down.
Overall, I am very pleased with this unit. It is very comfortable and the ear mounting system is the best I've tried. It has never fallen off. I sometimes wear it along with my sun glasses, and even a hat. Except for the average earpiece volume, I would rate this unit at 5 stars.

TopStrengths: Lightweight and easy to sync up to any of my bluetooth devices. I can use it to listen to things I have recorded on my Dell Axim.
Weakness: Sometimes it will garble a persons name during speed dial. It loses signal and the battery goes weak on me in under 30 minutes of use on some occassions.
I would recommend this headset but with some notes to future buyers. If you carry it in the carrying case, try to keep it in a position that will keep you from putting pressure on the side of the case. I believe this has been my problem with battery life. If you put pressure on the side of the case, the bluetooth light will come on. Constant pressure equals the unit being on a lot.
Another thing to be aware of is, if you're cell phone has the voice programming capability built into it, use the headset to program your voice recognition. I programmed using the phone first and then tested using the headset and 4 out of 5 times it did not recognize the name. When I programmed using the headset I had a perfect test.

TopStrengths: Excellent Battery Life, Light Weight, Quick Connection
Weakness: Struggling to find something... maybe, a visual Battery Strength meter would be nice. But the battery life is so good it's not really a concern.
No one on the other end realizes I'm on a headset. Very compact, light, and well-designed. I purchased a Euro version and use my v551 charger since I live in the US. Had no problems. Note that if you use this with a BT v1.2 device, the call quality and battery life will drastically improve for not only the BT headset but also the BT phone.

TopStrengths: Opening the boom to connect to the phone is great. Battery will last a while with that feature since the headset is either in use or completely off. It's insanely light. Looks great. Pairs quickly.
Weakness: Voice quality gets a 4 out of 5. I don't know if that's a bad thing though.
I would buy this headset again. It's super easy to use, and it's totally sleek. I'm looking forward to seeing if the next generation of sets has perfect sound quality since that's really the only thing this one seems to be missing. The sound, however, is pretty good (again, 4 out of 5).

TopStrengths: Easy to set up and use. Holds a charge well and works at an impressive range even through walls.
Weakness: None that I didn't expect. I twould be nice if it fit more securely to my ear, but to do this it would have to wrap around my ear, which I wouldn't like or go in my ear, which I would hate.
I am impressed with the range of this headset. I own several Bluetooth devices and the range on this headset when used with my phone (Moto V710) is better than the range I get from anything else (computers, PDAs). I can also connect the headset to my computer to use as a mike and speaker, but the range is diminished. In short, a great headset that I unhesitantly recommend.

TopStrengths: Lasts for the 8 hours stated
Weakness: Drains the battery of the phone it is in sync with
I have purchased 2 of the motorola 850 headsets. They definitely work as advertised. I bought one for myself and was so impressed, I bought one for my boyfriend. We can talk for hours with no drop in signal strength. I have a motorola v551 and the headset does drain my battery. My boyfriend has a motorola razr v3 and it does not seem to affect his battery as much. I recommend this product to anyone who talks on their phone alot. You will not be disappointed.

TopVery helpful since I have a razr v3c!! Complete selling point for me I am purchasing one now!!
Strengths: Longer standby times between charges, increased operating distance, increased operating duration.
Weakness: Adjusting volumne can be a bit tricky and voice recognition requires louder than normal speaking volumne.
Overall, I think the Motorola HS-850 is well worth the price and offers many features and functions thought impossible in the not so distant past. The voice quality and reception are great, styling is great, and the unit is compact and sleek. I tried a Bluetooth headset from a different company and was not nearly as impressed. I onsider this a best buy over all.

TopStrengths: Long battery, less ear ache than in the ear poroducts, quick BT link, very portable and durable. Listeners say good sound quality.
Weakness: Flops around a bit when one tilts their head. A bit muffeled on louder volumes.
Overall I am very happy with the purchase. I have tried almost every product on the market and find this has a nice balance of features and comfort. Every product is a compromise. This one has the fewest of them.

TopStrengths: battery life, weight, comfort
Weakness: charge plug can be finicky.
This is the best BT headset I have owned. It has perfect functionality with my Moto V551. The battery life is amazing. I haven't run out in a day yet. It is comfortable enough that It talk on it for hours.

TopStrengths: Small, Light weight, Clear & loud enough sound
Weakness: Cheap-looking plastic
I bought this for my Moto black Razr V3. They pair very well. Whenever I turn it off and on, it easily reconnects to Razr V3. It sounds clear and loud enough although sometimes my friends are telling me that they cannot hear my voice. Anyway I am satisfied by the most functions.

TopStrengths: Bluetooth works flawlessly with motorolla v551 phone. Hands free options work great and sound for the person being called is good and plenty loud. The battery life is terrific.
Weakness: Have to speak fairly loud for voice recognition. The volume on the headset is a little weak if there is alot of road noise but this is not a big problem
I really like this headset and prefer it over the jabra bluetooth set. It is very comfortable and easy to take on and off. I set it on the console in my truck with it off and when the phone rings I open the boom and put the unit on. By the time I have it on the headset answers the call (on about the 3rd ring). I would recomend this headset to anyone looking for a good bluetooth headset.

TopStrengths: Size / Form Factor, Flipping open boom microphone quickly connects to bluetooth phone and also answers the call
Weakness: Hook based headset doesn't fit well on my ears. Sound volume was too low on motorola e398 phone even when set to highest setting (but was plenty loud on a Blackberry 7290)
I used the HS850 and also the Jabra BT250 on and off to compare the two devices. The Jabra was definitely the more comfortable and stable unit when worn on the ear. The HS850 buttons were easier to press and use while worn. Aside from the volume issue (dependent on which phone you use it one), my only complaint with the HS850 is the fit on the ear.

TopStrengths: 1. Black color and the blue light are very eye-catching. 2. Flip mice is a great feature and allows a very long standby battery life. 3. The ear loop is comfortable and easy to attach to your ear.
Weakness: 1. The echoing of your voice makes this product unusable. 2. The device did not feel secure when attached to my ear. 3. Callers complained of a tunnel like sound.
I was very excited when I received the HS-850; the color, flip mice, and the size are great features. The reason I'm going to return the device is because of the echoing of my voice. The echoing of my voice is so annoying that I will not use the device and have started the process to return the HS-850 Headset. I was also unhappy to hear that people I called, or those who called me, complained that it sounded like I was speaking from within a tunnel.

TopStrengths: Convenient, quick auto-connect, good range, sensitive microphone, Bluetooth 1.2, long battery life, Black color
Weakness: Less effective in noisy surroundings, volume is reduced for the receiver when compared to direct use of phone, need to talk louder for voice dial
I have used a Plantronics headset before and I found this one more convenient to use and it connects more easily. It auto-connects well with my phone on opening the boom, maybe because my phone is Motorola as well. I recharge every night and haven't had it run out of charge ever.
The piece I received seemed to have been packaged for Asian market since the manual and packaging used Chinese/Japanese in addition to English. The packaged adapter is unusable in the US, but a US adapter was separately included.
Overall, very pleased to own this headset. I had done some comparison with other headsets in terms of technical features and comfort before making this purchase. I paid $94 + shipping for this.

TopStrengths: Compact, Clarity, Auto Answer, Charge Duration.
Weakness: Need to speak loud for voice recognition.
HS850 Headset has excellent clarity with volume control. It holds it's charge for long duration. You can set it to answer after a chosen amount of rings. Have to speak loudly when using voice to make calls.

TopStrengths: loud and clear.
Weakness: The ear hook should have steel wire inside so it can be stayed to the shape of smaller ears.
I have owned this for two months so I can have a very thorough review. The unit is very easy to pair with the Motorola model V80. The one nice feature is it will beep when the phone receives weak signals.

TopStrengths: Long Battery Life, Clear Reception and Range
Weakness: Sits rather loose on your ear and feels like it will fall off even though it stays in place.
I would recommend this model over any of the previous Motorola bluetooth headsets, based on battery life and connectivity. It uses BT 1.2 which filters out a lot more wireless intereference.

TopStrengths: Works great, and very easy to setup and use. Phenomenal battery life!
Weakness: Manual doesn't say much about how often to charge the batteries-- I don't want to wear them out.
This headset works really well. I am talking to friends and colleagues who say it is the clearest headset and signal they've ever heard me talk to them from. Many people don't even know that I am on a headset. I highly recommend this device, and I got a superb deal at pricegrabber.com

TopStrengths: Connects/disconnects from V3 Razr very quickly and reliably. Remarkably good voice pick-up given distance of mic from mouth.
Weakness: A colleague with the same unit has had to RMA his after it began to exhibit scratchy sound. The soft rubber surround to the earpiece also ripped after being in his shirt pocket for a few weeks.
Overall an electrically sound design but I have worries about the mechanical strength of the mouthpiece hinge and have evidence that the soft parts near the earpiece tear with little provocation. I would like to see readily available replacement soft 'plastic' parts.
The blinking blue light while it is on the ear draws needless attention. I don't understand why MOT feel their consumers want to draw attention to themselves like this. At best is it a distraction, at worst it is an advertisement of something valuable, portable, and accessible to steal.

TopStrengths: easy setting, battery duration
Weakness: sound quality
In general a good product but the sound quality was so bad that I had to return it.
I had a sonyericsson H-602 that was loosing bleutooth link every 25 minutes, so I change it for the Morotal HS850 because I thought there might be a compatilbity issue with my V600. With the HS850 I didn't experiment any bleutooth link disconnection and I really liked the "enable/disable" feature activation when you flip the boom. BUT people were keep asking me to repeat and I got complains at a point that I was forced to return it.
The voice quality was bad even when the headset was in an arm distance from the handset.

TopStrengths: No cord between phone & headset, long battery life, light weight, good range.
Weakness: Doesn't fit well on either ear, takes too much time to make it fit well enough to use, sound muffled at receiver's end, can't dial numbers that aren't already programmed, lousy in noisy areas.
Nice gadget to have but too much hassle to use. Surrounding sounds are muffled when wearing it causing a sense of imbalance especially while driving. I wouldn't want to wear it while not actively using it -- and that defeats it supposed convenience.
If you want to try something like this, get the HS-820 instead (now costs about half as much as the HS-850).

TopStrengths: looks, folds in nicely
Weakness: Terrible reception and range, cheap plastic parts
I bought this thinking that with a Motorola phone their headset would be the best in terms of compatibilty. Boy, was I wrong !!
It looks cool and is very ergonomically designed but that is about it.
When it comes down to what it is supposed to do, it is terrible. Very poor range (I have to hold the phone about 5 inches from the headset for it to work smoothly). If the phone is any where more than 5" from the headset, I can hear all kinds of cracks and pops. Over 3' and the phone loses signal with the headset entirely...
I decided to go with the plantronics L510 instead (far far better in all respects than the hs850). What a waste of money and time !!!

TopStrengths: small and easy to use! Uses the same charger as my phone.
Weakness: poor signal when i move away from the phone. My Jabra had better distance.Sometime it drops the call.
THis bluetooth headset is ok. Looks nice. But doesnt perform as well as my Jabra. Sometimes when I receive a call and i try to answer it thru the headset, it wont. So I have to answer it on the phone itself. All and All I think its just ok for the price i paid for it.

TopStrengths: good battery, comfortable, easy to sync with phone, light, flip boom on/off switch
Weakness: poor volume, noise, cheap controls, confusing alerts
This should be a much better product. Motorola had time to do it right and didn't quite make it. My biggest complaint is volume, especially while driving. At MAX I can't hear the other party when there is any ambient noise at all. I often drive my pickup and the headset is unusable- different story, of course, in my car. There is also the problem with distortion - I get popping and clicking often that is very annoying. I'm using a BT 1.2 Moto phone and the problem occurs in different setting so it doesn't appear to be related to interference from other sources. The buttons are cheap and you can't be sure you actually operated them because they give no positive feel. Another annoying feature is the tendency of the headset to emit beeps for no apparent reason - still can't figure that one out. Overall this is a "shudda been a contenda" headset instead of a clear winner. I'm sending my back.

TopStrengths: Great design. Good call quality (could be a bit louder tho). Pair up w/ V600 flawlessly & quickly (w/in 2 seconds after opening flip). Awesome battery life. Compact & light.
Weakness: Moto, pleas use more scratch-resistent plastic!
I love this little headset. Its so convenient, especially w/ voice dail! Sound quality is pretty good even when driving w/ windows down, altho I wish the volume is a bit louder. The flip that doubles as power on/off is a great feature cuz it cuts power waste. And it pairs up w/ the phone very quickly, even in the middle of a call.
I am finally beginning to like Moto products...

TopStrengths: Very good battery life and can hear through ear piece over wind noise in car with no problem. Range is pretty accurate per the manufacturers specs outdoors.
Weakness: A little scratchy when phone is in pocket (problem maybe attributed to operating system on phone - Win OS). Indoors range is very limited if not in line of sight.
Over all I am very pleased with the perfomance of this earpiece. Especially if one is a Motorola user you won't need to buy extra chargers because all the accesories compatible with the phones can be used on the earpiece. Design is not only stylish but also very comfortable to wear. Controls are easy access and simple to use.

Weakness: sound quality (7.5 out of 10), hate the blue light
as I said sound quality could use some improvement however, I did not find it too terrible like I read in some review sometimes it even very clear (I'd say most of the time) but I need a more consistent sound quality so I rate it 7.5 out of 10 base on its consistency. one time when im using it, I left my SE P910 in my room upstair and then I went downstair without my phone and I can still talk and hear clearly in my kitchen (although I heard a terrible noise when I walk through the stairs but after that it was good). personally, I'd not buy this headset at bestbuy ($99) this product is overprice so get from the internet for $50-60 I think it is worth that much.

TopStrengths: Battery life is very nice.
Weakness: Reception is not always perfect. Even if you have it only a couple feet away (i.e. your pocket)
Overall I am satisfied with the purchase.
Interferrence does not happen all the time. Usually just in certain area.
It's lightweight and and fits securely.

TopStrengths: Elegant design, light weight, good battery life.
Weakness: On-ear design makes it feel like it's going to fall off and makes volume in noisy environments a problem.
Overall I'm not impressed with any of the bluetooth headsets that I've used so far. My Jabra 200 had poor audio quality on send/receive and the Motorola seems to have good sound quality but people complained that I "sounded far away." The biggest weakness is the fact that it barely sits on year ear and will shift around if you are moving. It is my belief that bluetooth is really only useful in automobiles--the headsets aren't worthwhile to me.

TopStrengths: Nothing. This thing is useless.
Weakness: Sound quality is awful, with lots of static. Callers at the other end complain of echo-sounds in the call. Very wobbly feeling, as if it's always about to fall off your ear. Bad volume controls.
Tried two different units, both had problems. The first unit had sound problems as described in the "weaknesses" section above. The second unit had similar sound quality problems, and also exhibited bizarre behavior - such as when the boom was closed (which is supposed to turn the unit off), the unit remained "on". The volume controls are very difficult to use while wearing the headset, and when turned to maximum volume cause such severe audio distortion as to render the incoming audio as completely unintelligible. And even then, the volume is still not loud enough. And yes, my hearing is excellent, so it's not a case of bad hearing.
The feel on the ear is somewhat less than comfortable, and always seems as if the whole headset is about to fall off.
The operator's manual seems to have been written by someone without much writing skill, and the layout is very amateur -- for example, the heading for a given paragraph will appear on the page before the paragraph itself, which makes the operator's guide difficult to use. This product really feels like a half-baked attempt. Great spec sheet when you read about it, but reality is a completely different story.

TopStrengths: easy to use, great standby time, clear calls, quick connection, and can use in either ear
Weakness: when you walk the ear peace flops up and down, but doesn't fall off and sometimes you have to talk louder than if you had the handset to your face.
I really do like the idea of this wireless headset. I couln't stand having to untwist the wires of my old headset everytime I wanted to use the phone. I also like that you can just open the flap and put the earpiece to you ear to answer the call. The hs850 is so sweet I even convinced my girlfriend to get one herself.

TopStrengths: Cool factor is a 9
Weakness: Doesn't have full functionality with the Treo 650. Doesn't connect right away. Only the talk and hang up functions work on the unit.
Don't be fooled by places that say this works with the Treo 650. It doesn't function like expected. The flip out talk bar is good, but, functions like call waiting and other common features do NOT work with the Treo 650.
If I was a Treo 650 user, I would not by this product. I returned mine. It is useless to me.

TopStrengths: The ability to connect and disconnect to my V710 phone by opening or closing the boom mic
Weakness: The volumn controls are hard to get to and have to search. It might be nice to have some sort of distingusing feature on those buttons to allow for easy location.
Overall this cell phone extension is a very nice hands free device. The convenience of connecting and disconnecting from your Bluetooth phone is great and very convenient. Also, the extra accessories, Holster and Lanyard, are great to have and should be able to meet anyone’s need.

TopStrengths: Small clever design
Weakness: Doesn't work
Not compatible with my laptop's built in bluetooth module. Don't be fooled into thinking this headset is universally compatible with all bluetooth enable devices. Check before buying.

TopStrengths: Sound strength and clarity. Signal strength.
Weakness: Poor fit on small ear. Battery lasts more like 72 hours on standby, instead of 200 hours claimed.
Instructions extremely POOR. To connect to Motorola V551, you have to use the 'handsfree' option on your phone instead of the more intuitive 'setup' [this is after you select 'bluetooth']. It doesn't tell you this anywhere. You just have to figure it out or be luck on the first attempt. There is no help phone number or email or web help. Overall, a nice unit. We plan to purchase another or our other V551 phone.

Weakness: 1)in the process of testing. will write my comments soon.
Hi,
I got the motorola hs850 headset for my motorola v710 phone (verizon service provider) from pricegrabber. I have a couple of questions.
1) when i'm travelling in my car , i normally wear it in my ear .The design of the headset is such that you cannot open or close the boom without removing the headset from the ear. So the boom is always open when i wear it in my ear even thought i'm not making or receiving any calls. Is it supposed to be like that. Doesnt it utilise the charge, keep the connection always on because of that. Any comments on this .
2) Also i have a transflash card in my v710 phone from which i can play mp3. when i play on my mp3 songs , the audio doesnt come thro my headset. Do you know the reason, do i need to do any other setup. When i disconnect(close the boom) and play it through my phone speaker directly it plays fine.
Any quick help/comments on these would be greatly appreciated as i can return it if there is any problem.
Thanks,
-sridhar

TopStrengths: Great product. Easy setup. Rechargeable feature a must. Retractable boom very handy. Switchable Rt/Lt ear earhook very convenient.
Weakness: Flexible plastic speaker shroud surrounding the earport keeps coming off, though. Handy small case with belt clip inflexible when new redialed calls if headset is placed into case while still active.
I purchased this product for my son who is a long distance truck driver. The handsfree feature for cellphone use is obviously a must for his use in communications with his dispatcher. The ability to hear through the earpiece was a concern for him, not met by other handsfree products. The Motorola HS850, however, worked ideally with both clarity of reception as well as tranmission and provided sufficient volume for him to hear clearly over outside road sounds. He was quite pleased, and I have since purchased one for my own cellphone.

TopThis buyer must be of the "male species" hahahahaha.
You see, most of us males, myself included, feel that
we simply don't need to use the "USER MANUALS"; that is
until AFTER we have screwed things up either to the point
that they will not work at all or where we just simply
cannot perform the simplest of tasks. IF this buyer would
have simply read the "USER MANUAL", they would have seen,
as quickly as 1,2,3, how to simply change over the "loop connector" in order for it to fit either the left or right
ear. As for my headset, it is OUTSTANDING in every way.
Strengths: When it worked, it was great.
Weakness: Battery life was only about 3 days with no use at all.
Battery life with the it turned off (boom closed) was about 5 days.
Charge light stopped working correctly on the 5th charge.
This unit might be defective and I am sending it back to the reseller for another one.

Weakness: Would not bond with any phone. Tried 4 of them.
I don't know if this is a Europeon or Asian model, but when the box came in, it was different then the one I had before. I figured it was ok, so I plug it in, wait a day, and I try to use it. Didn't work, so I tried a friends phone. Didn't work either, so I try my sisters phone. No luck there, so I try my mom's...still nothing. To make it worse, a lot of the parts fall off, which makes me think that this one was counterfiet.

TopWeakness: I bought 2, one for my husband and one for myself for Christmas. BOTH had defective microphones. Never used!!

TopStrengths: For the few days it worked it worked pretty well

Weakness: Poor quality, doesn't function as it should
Once again I have learned the lesson that you get what you pay for. While this headset appears to be like the higher priced silver model it is far from it. The first headset I recieved did not function at all and the second one had poor volume and voice quality. After three days the boom became totally nonfunctional in the sense that it would not disconnect and all calls would be routed to the headset unless it was powered down. I finally gave up and purchased a silver HS850 from a local electronics store and it works great. This item is oiously manufactured for the Asian market since the packaging is different and all the instructions are in Asiatic text as well as english. Long story short, bite the bullet and go for quality rather than price.

TopStrengths: Battery Life....thats it.
Weakness: Echo Echo Echo on your clients side...They hear their voice in the speaker. Poor sound quality..you have to hold it to your ear.
Horrible little creature. This is one of the worst purchases, I've made in awhile. I was buying this to replace an hs820 that I was pleased with. I purchased two of these and both stink. You buy one of these, you'll be using your phone to your ear before the week's out. Bank on it.

TopStrengths: lightweight, compact, and nice color
Weakness: unable to hear well in car. does not sit well on ear, feels loose compared to my previous jabrabt800. no battery indicator.
I use to have the jabra bt800 but I accidently broke it. I wanted to try something different but this motorola hs850 is not for me. The earpiece does not sit snug against my ear so if you turn your head it moves. It's not loud enough. In the car I can hardly hear. I'm at a point where I don't use it much. Would not recommend.

TopStrengths: Looks cool and connects to phone easily.
Weakness: Your dog might be able to hear it at its highest volume.
Unless you're dog-boy or like saying "huh" allot, buy something that works. I bought 3 after reading warnings about volume from others. You can too now. The best thing I got out of the deal was 3 extra chargers for our Motorola phones.

TopStrengths: Duarable, Stylish, very light, lovely boom design, good battery life
Weakness: It stayes loose on the either ears therfore you can not get stronge sound.
I but this headset almost 40 days ago, perfect deal comparing to the store prices which runs around $100. The very first problem I noticed while using it with my Audiovox VX6600 was the static. Ofcourse I don't blame Motorola, the problem probably is my handset. Then I really don't like the loose placement of this device, somtimes I have to push it toward my ear to hear the other partys voice. I guess the main reason people buy hands free headsets is to have their hands free while talking :-)

TopStrengths: The headset is very handy as I have had an earlier model which I gave to my son. I love the Bluetooth capability.

TopStrengths: All the functions you'd like your wired headset to do. Good range. Last forever. Works perfectly with Motorola phones. Works wonder with my MotoV551.
Weakness: Doesn't work seamlessly with my SonyEricsson.
Bought this headset because it has a very long life and has the "boom" for easy on, off. Fabulous feature, charge my unit once every four days. Can do a variety of things such as answering a call waiting, joining two calls, redialing, etc. Took me three min to learn all the functions. Down side is it does not work as seamlessly with my Sony Ericsson as it does Motorola. Go figure.

TopStrengths: Compact, good batery life
I have to play around with the fitting on my ear to keep it from bouncing when I walk and so it is comfortable if I wear it for long periods of time. However, everyone's ear is different so I wouldn't list this as a weakness.

TopStrengths: ease of pairing. voice clarity both receive and send.
Weakness: none experienced so far.
I've only used the HS850 for 2 days now and this is my first BT headset but given my limited experience i can say that first impressions are very good. i find it comfortable to wear and easy to fit (unlike the experiences of some other reviewers). I'm technically challenged but i had no problem following the instructions for pairing with my nokia 6820. the range is somewhere around 25 feet line of site but i haven't experimented room to room.

TopStrengths: Easy to setup, very clear.

TopStrengths: Easy Sync Up, So far good battery life, pretty comfortable, good reception
Weakness: None so far, not a true US power adapter as a converter must be inserted on the end.
So far so good on this headset. When I received this headset, the package said it would need 2 hours to charge, but it charged in about 1.5 hours. I then paired the headset with my phone and it was fairly simple. The opening/closing of boom is a cool feature, however leaving the Bluetooth "on" on my phone really drains my phones battery. So basically if someone calls you, when bluetooth is "off", you either have to talk as is, try to navigate thru the menu and turn it on, or tell them you'll call them back.
Looks wise its a very sleek unit. The blue light is somewhat distracting, but doesn't bother me. Hey I cant see it, its on my head.
Most people I have talked to have said its very clear and they cant tell.
One thing I cant figure out is which way this unit fits in the carrying case.

TopStrengths: Earpiece and microphone are phenomenal. You can whisper into the headset and the person on the other line can hear you. The earpiece is crystal clear with speach. Battery life is excellent.
Weakness: The way the earpeice sits on the side of the head although very comfortable might get irritating after a while.
Anyone who owns a bluetooth compatible phone and hates earpieces that sit directly in the ear, should invest in this fine Motorola product. No one does it better than Motorola.

TopStrengths: portability, ease of use, eye catching looks, NO WIRES!
Weakness: Has hard time picking up voice activated phone book. Static break up between the headset and phone connection may occur from time to time.
The unit is great. It offers a great alternative to conventional hands free kits. You may experience some bugs this early in the Bluetooth game. The phone's battery life is slashed with the use of this headset. I have also experienced some problems with getting the "dial by voice" feature to work properly due to the microphones position. Don't get me wrong, if you want the best in tech, this is the model for you.

TopStrengths: Compact and Convenient with good range
Weakness: Doesn't have a secure fit over your ear. Voice recognition is weak on voice calls
Overall I am happy with the HS850 headset. Since the product hold a charge for a long period of time, it is ideal for traveling. Even though it doesn't have a snug fit around either of your ears, it light weight still allows the headset to be reasonably comfortable.

TopStrengths: Very good voice clarity
Weakness: Hard to hook around ear.
Its a good product for the price,. It serves purpose satisfactorily. Gives you very good voice quality. Very light weight. No complaints regarding calls dropping. Only problem is that it is does not hook onto ear nicely. A happy user.

TopStrengths: It has great battery life. It connects to the phone very quickly. I do like the blue lighting when in use.
Weakness: Sound quality is awful in both counts. In coming calls is fair not great and for other caller other line is not great but fair too. Background noise is very noticeable to the caller when in use making
If you want better sound I recommended the H700. Its alittle cheaper and battery life is not as good as then the HS850. It is also alittle smaller then the HS850.

TopStrengths: Long talk and standby time Compact and easy to use
Weakness: Ear cradle is large, flimsy and does not adjust to smaller ears.

TopStrengths: lots of talk time, good signal, easy pairing
Weakness: can fall off your ear without you noticing.
This product does exactly what its supposed to do.Reception and broadcast strength are good.I`d say the most important feature is safety. TopStrengths: long talk time, boom that opens and closes, comfortable
Weakness: rubber that stabilizes headset breaks off from headset
I bought 2 of these for 2 different phones. I already owned one of them before and the rubber part broke away from the headset so the headset wouldn't sit on my ear right. It lasted until 1 day after my warranty was up! I still love this headset though because I don't have to worry about accidentally doing something with it since I know it's off when the boom is closed. And you really can talk for 8 hours or so with it.

TopStrengths: Light, crystal clear, great volume
Weakness: Well other than the first didn't survive a dip in the pool can't think of any!
This is my second Motorola HS850 earpiece. I have been impressed with both very much. As already mentioned, I loved my first unit right up to the time it was in my pocket when I got pushed into a swimming pool. Upon getting the new unit, deleted old unit from phone and completed the pairing in about 1 minute. The only thing I wish, is that it came with a car charger as well as wall charger.

TopStrengths: light, great run time on the battery, easy to operate, good volume range, good range from phone, sounds clear in most applications.
Weakness: feels a bit loose on my ear if I'm doing brisk activity.
So far, after 4 days of operation, I'm very happy with the product, volume is good for while driving on the freeways. Volume switches can be hard to find without dismounting from your ear while driving. Great combo with my Nokia 6126, almost flawless for hands free operation. Beats holding a phone to your head while driving.

TopStrengths: Small, light, comfortable. Very well constructed.
Weakness: Doesn't ring in the ear, just 2 beeps. Not loud enough.
I used this for 2 weeks till my Moto H700 arrived. My major critisism is it is not loud enough, and it only beeps twice when ringing. If my phone was on silent, I could easily miss it ringing in a slightly noisy environment.
The 700 is better, but not without its faults too.

TopShipping went well. Product is as described. Overall headset works very well and is easy to set up. Would like product better if ear clip could be shaped to my ear, it is a little uncomfortable on one ear and loose on the other, but it is workable.

TopStrengths: Range, on/off feature, easy setup, weight, battery life, device compatibility, size, volume controls work well
Weakness: audio quality, connectivity issues sometimes,
Bluetooth Headsets are coming a long ways while getting cheaper. I bought this model at a Radio Shack for $49.99 while retail is $99.99. I also purchased a warranty because you never know what might happen. Anyway on with the product; I found this product to be light weight and non cumbersome. When used with voice dialing it seems to miss some sounds sometimes. I really like the flip feature of the boom to disconnect the headset from your device. I’m sorry I am using this headset with a Motorola V3m Product Red Phone. Easy setup! So easy that after the initial setup you can memorize how to set it up. I was bouncing it between mine and my wife’s phone in the car. I found the audio quality wasn’t as good as the Radio Shack sales person was touting about. When it comes to the “Shack” I should know better though. The Range is awesome. I had my phone in my basement while I was in the kitchen upstairs and the device did not lose the phone. One of my issues is that the HS850 does not have a USB mini charger like the H500 so I can not use it with the Motorola SKN6222 Bluetooth Adapter Charger “Y” Cable for RAZR V3 and H500 headset. So I have to go back to two different chargers instead of one and no more hooking my headset to the USB-mini computer cable for a charge. Only reason I say that is because I hate using more outlets than I have to.
I believe that Bluetooth will eventually find its place when the audio is crystal clear and the battery life will last for weeks rather than hours (talk time) and days (stand-by time). For now I believe that this is a good starter headset if you can find one for under $39.99. Thank goodness for Priceline!

Weakness: A little quiet for car use, falls off of my wife's small ears.

TopStrengths: Sound quality good.
Weakness: fits loose on ear. Thia one doesn't always turn on. Bulky.
I have this product for about a month. I would say my experience is only fair. It is bulky on the ear, although lightweight, and doesn't feel secure. I have trouble with it not turning on when the boom is flipped out, could be a defect in the one I got. It is a definate improvement over the plantronics I had as far as sound quality and reception. Still, it gets a lot of static at only 15 ft.

TopStrengths: Easy set-up
Weakness: Range & fit to ear
The set-up was effortless with my Razr Red phone. The fit is OK, but I wouldn't call it snug or secure. The audio is very clear, and no one has any trouble hearing me. I haven't programmed the voice-activation yet, which should simplify use greatly. I am disappointed in the range within my home. (This is one of the primary reasons I purchased the headset.) I am in an area with marginal reception & hoped to place the phone in a window sill for better reception, but this has not proved successful. Still, I am very happy to have a wireless headset for every other purpose & not disappoointed with this model as it interfaces with my Motorola phone.

Since this Bluetooth Headset that you brought is only 2 week old, it should be under manufacturer warranty. Contact the vendor you brought from on how to get it warrantied. Good luck.
Strengths: ear piece has adjustable volume buttons, links up quickly with phone
Weakness: The button on the ear peice goes bad constantly 1-2 months and it has to be exchanged. Gain on microphone can pick up voices from 50-100 feet like they are next to you. Person calling can't hear you.
I would like a better debouncing key that connects or disconnects the headset. The headset button constantly fails I would like one that allows me to put the ear piece in my pocket and the pressure from the body and pants does not cause it to go bad. The biggest complaint I have is that the gain on the microphone is so good that it picks up voices from 50-100 feet like they are next to you. The person calling in constantly complains about echo which is the ear piece reflectly from the ear to the microphone. Have to turn the volume way down and than I can't hear. I can't believe there is no adjustment for microphone. One would think the microphone would have an adjustment. Duh! If you have the radio on forget about using the blue tooth to do voice commands can't properly understand between the radio or ambient noise and user. I wish they would also design the voice commands to pick up most commonly called numbers. Sometimes the voice commands people names you can't not understand the voice recognition. I have to pull out the phone to see what names it is trying to say. They need a american that can speak properly.

The HS850 is an excellent blue tooth headset. It works well even at a distance from the phone. I found the best price on Pricegrabber - nearly $60 less than any brick and mortar store.

TopStrengths: volume is good and can be heard well 90% of the time.
Weakness: you will get have to put up with it feeling like it is going to fall off your head.
over all the item looks good, works well
and it easy to use. just open it up and it cuts on.
it doesn't get much easier than that.

TopStrengths: size and battery life
Weakness: quality of sound and materials.
This is a GN Netcom headset, don't be fooled. I dropped one and it broke open to expose the GN Netcom guts. I have been through 4 of these now in about a year. The first one's speaker went out, the second one broke apart, the third one wouldn't stay connected, and this 4th one has had the rubber ear boot tear apart at the seam. I am looking into a Plantronics headset since they are the major competitor to GN in the tel world, and usually their products are top notch. I would not suggest this to anyone who doesn't plan on keeping it permanently attached to their ear!

TopStrengths: Light weight, comfortable, flip mike power switch, good sound and mike.
Weakness: Have not been able to work with PC yet.
I plan to use this with my cell phone and PC Voip. Need to have software to pair with PC Bluetooth USB adapter. I will investigate a special driver that will work with Sype and other Voip services. It would be nice to also have some voice commands like my cell phone.

TopStrengths: When you open it, it answers the call. Volume control on headset. Like having a case and cord. Has better volume than the 810 I lost.
Weakness: Volume can be alittle low at max and not the best sound quality.

The HS850 handles common tasks, including voice dialing, redialing, and putting calls on hold. As with most Bluetooth headsets, headset and hands-free modes are both supported. <p>The HS850 could use a stronger maximum volume, and it was more receptive to wind noise than most. Users’ voices sounded slightly muffled, but not unacceptably so. Noise canceling in our background music tests was...

Worth it!
Strengths: Works Great
Weakness: Doesn't fit in carry pouch
The Motorola HS850 bluetooth headset with pouch is a great unit. Easy to set up with my Nokia 6270. Does kill the battery on my phone a lot faster when using bluetooth. Not the headset's fault though. I was disappointed that the headset does not fit in the accompanying Motorola pouch that came with the unit. Good buy overall!
