Holy Crap...how disappointing!
I've been a fan ...
Strengths:Nothing noteworthy. Unit upgrade are nice.
Weaknesses:AI is weak.
Build controls are bothersome.
Fire controls for special weapons are bothersome (Partical Cannon, etc.)

I've been a fan of the Westwood C&C games for years, but it seems that EA has totally abandoned what made them great...STORY!!!
The Westwood games all had great stories and cinema between campaigns. Heck, in the original, they had James "Freakin!" Earl Jones and Michael Biehn acting in them. I can still remember one video sequence in the original where playing as the GDI, you're cut off from communication and your screen shows a rapidly scrolling list of com locations where you're connections keep failing...until you finally get a connection via Las Vegas, baby, yeah! That was sooo cool!
Before I comment on Generals, I must disclose that I've only played the US forces...but it was so disappointing, I may not bother with the other two factions.
As I've said, the story is weak and there's no cinema, just ho-hum animation clips. There are only six campaigns and all of them are "destroy all the enemy forces", nothing special, nothing unique for you special commando to do, etc. Creating units, especially troops, is troublesome since you're limited to a max of nine requests at a time. You should be able to queue at least 15-20 troops at once. There are no onscreen menus for builds while in the field. You have to be at your base, clicked on the appropriate building,to see your build options and create whatever. In the field, a "General" should be able to command more troop/armor builds without having to physically be in his base. For building it's understandable since you have to place them.
In truth, I suspect this game was created primarily for skirmish and heads-up play. I haven't tried those features yet, but it probably works fine for that.
The game ran fine for me, unless I'd had it running for hours...in which case it got clunky. This surprised me since I'm playing it on a 2.8GHz P4 system w/ a 256MB X700 ATI Radeon PCI-Express video card and 1GB of DDR2 memory. Restarting the game fixed this problem.
My conclusion, C&C games are no longer an option for me as long as EA is producing them. RugerAoh
