Weaknesses:

Tired old case, front USB and Headphone jacks are hard to reach

Posted Jun 21, 2005 - I upgraded to this desktop from my old Dell Dimension 8200 which I had bought in November 2001. Well, on the outside, nothing has changed. Same case, same flip up front cover, and frankly, I'm a bit tired of this case; however, the inside is what's really important and the 8400 is much improved. It carries the latest intel chips with HT technology and chipsets as well as the newer and faster pci express slots. Of course, if you want the latest and greatest desktop from dell, look into the just released Dell Dimension 9100 that finally improves upon the case and incorporates the Intel Dual Core chips. Otherwise, I'm fairly satisfied with the 8400 with its expandability and performance.

Strengths:

Expandability, Flexibility

Weaknesses:

Only 2 IDE Slots.

Posted Jun 24, 2005 - This is an upgrade for my previous 8200 machine. I am happy with over all performance but not a significant difference in the day to day work from my old PC. My old PC has RD ram which is what triggered me to buy a new one. I am happy with expandability of the PC especially when the SATA HD's are cheaper. I am happy that this PC does very low noise when it is compared with the 8200.

Thank you for the valuable feedback!

4 Star Review Dell Dimension 8400 Desktop

Strengths:

Great price, lightning fast, fantastic display, very quiet

Weaknesses:

Bland design

Posted 1 year ago - When it arrived I couldn't wait to get it out of the box. It took less than 10 minutes to get this system setup, powered up and ready to go. It does not disappoint, for the money I cannot think of a better deal. The PC is packed with the latest features (SATA, PCIe, DDR2, LCD monitor, etc.) and backed by a name brand that seems to stand out in a very competitive market. If you go with a Dell, be sure to spring for the Ultrasharp LCD, well worth the extra money, I got the 20 inch one and have not been able to wipe the smile off my face everytime I sit down in front of it. If the case was a little more exciting I would have easily given it 5 stars. But I do not hesitate to recommend it to family and friends. As a matter of fact I ordered one for my wife and in the process of convincing my dad to give up his outdated PC and spring for this beauty.

Posted Mar 20, 2005 - The Dell Dimension 8400 offers exciting new hardware, but unless you're a staunch early adopter, you won't see a compelling reason to make an immediate upgrade.

Weaknesses:

Posted May 11, 2005 - This PC is designed for high-end gaming and multimedia functions. Intel's top-of-the-line Pentium 4 and the new high-performance 925X Express chipset; PCI Express graphics card; strong performer with an eye toward the future; crisp monitor; strong support options. I'm very happy with it. Highly recommend!

Strengths:

Price and Dell Reputation

Weaknesses:

No help from Dell when it crashed.

Posted Jul 30, 2005 - I loved this new DEll while it worked. It lasted for 6 months and when I turned it on there was no Start button or task bar. I was sick because I couldn't work the computer. The data in some programs on the Desktop was there, but none of the programs worked. I called Dell and they said it was a "Spyware" problem and couldn't do anything since it wasn't a "hardware" problem. I had paid for a four year warranty - 7/24 with home service. I had been backing up my data and was able to load the data into my old computer. I now have a beautiful Dell 8400 Media Center Edition computer with a 360 hard drive and 1GB Ram that is worthless.

Strengths:

Good performance. Low price.

Weaknesses:

Noisy.

Posted Apr 17, 2005 - I bought it in a recent sale at Dell SB. Its performance / price ratio is unbeatable. The 8400 is good for gamers and high end business users. But if you want to use it as a living room PC, it's a little too noisy. I guess you can blame the Intel processor. It generates too much heat. Dell has to use a HUGE heat sink plus a fan to cool it down. I also own a Dell Dim 4550. That box is very quiet unless you put it to heavy work. But the 8400 is noisy the moment you turn it on. Dell is no longer shipping Windows installation CD with new systems. They creates a 3GB+ partition on your HD to store the original disk image. That makes system restore much easier.

5 Star Review Solid Desktop, Reasonable Price Point for the Performance.

Strengths:

Upgradable, with two 5.25" and two 3.5" bays accessible to the outside. PCI Express slot allows for high-performance graphics.

Weaknesses:

Tired design. All the desktops made during its time look alike. Front USB ports are annoyingly difficult to access.

Posted Jul 13, 2006 - This desktop offers the best of both worlds. While it isn't ridiculously priced like many of Dell's XPS systems, it still offers much of the performance of their higher-end systems. It has space for plenty of upgrades and has a PCI Express slot that allows for many of the higher-end graphics cards. Uses serial ATA hard drives for high performance. The only complaints I have are minimal at best. I personally find the way the case opens to be quite annoying. It doesn't always close completely with ease and can be a pain to open. The design of the case has been beaten to death, and it's no surprise that soon after this desktop's realease, Dell completely changed the overall design of their desktops. The front USB ports (accessible by flipping open the crescent-shaped Dell piece of plastic on the front of the case) are not ideally located. It would be better if they were facing outward more (as opposed to pointing too far down). Overall, this desktop is highly recommended. Price point + reliability + performance is a good combination in almost every situation.

Thank you for the valuable feedback!
