Good unit for older patients
Large size and large screen good for elderly, easy to use, can use convenient test disc
Expensive test strips/disc, misleading (larger blood sample and longer wait time if using the disc), no sample test disc in box
Posted Feb 7, 2008 - The Ascensia Breeze2 comes with a meter, quick reference guide and user guide, lancing device with 5 lancets, record diary, carrying case, and warranty card. The meter is large and bulky compared to other units, about 4" x 2.5" x 1". The large size may be inconvenient to carry around but it fits nicely into the palm of your hand and is probably good for older people with arthritic hands. The design is self-explanatory and very easy to use. Push the power button once to turn on, and once to turn off. It also turns on automatically when you pull out the bottom tray to advance the test disc. It has a nice big screen (about 1.5" x 1.2"), which gives a large clear reading, again good for older people with poor eyesight. The bottom half of the front panel flips open to reveal more buttons, which let you access things such as the 420 test memory or 7 day, 14 day, or 30 day averages. The back panel flips open to load a 10-test disc, and the side panel slides out to replace the CR2032 button cell battery (1 is already included). Though the box advertises small blood sample (1ul), there are other meters such as the Ascensia Contour that require an even smaller blood sample. Also, the 1ul blood sample and 5 sec result is only if you use the test strips. If you use the test disc, it requires a 2.5-3.5 ul sample, and requires 30 sec to get a result. The test disc is valid for 10 readings. The unit comes with a black nylon carrying case that is padded and zips around 3 sides so that it opens like a book. The unit itself is backed by a 5-year limited warranty. If you send the warranty card in, you also get the option of choosing a free gift: 30 free lancets, a subscription to Diabetic Cooking magazine, or a coupon for test strips. Overall, a good unit for older patients due to the large size, ease of use, and large screen, but watch out for the cost of test strips and larger sample size required for the test discs.
