Get one you'll like it

Strengths:

Very sturdy construction. Magnesium alloy metal just like the 5d. Rubber not plastic grip material on the sides and bottom. No error 99 problem associated with the 20d grip combo.

Weaknesses:

Would have liked the grip to have more sculpted ergonomic handle similar to the cameras horizotal one. Minor complaint! Does make camera heavy but sturdy.

Posted Oct 24, 2005 - The combination ot the 5d and BGE4 is rock solid. It feels like I am holding a 1ds Mark II in my hands. No flexing at the seams like on the 10d and 20d.

Canon BG-E4 – to buy or not to buy

Strengths:

 Comfortable portrait shooting  Material and built  AE/FE lock button  AF point selector  Double the shooting time  More balance feel with large telepho

Weaknesses:

 Added weight  High price  Shoulder strap some times get in the way

Posted Apr 12, 2006 - Summary I own another Canon DSLR Rebel 300D. This grip is far more expensive but better made than BG-E1. The material matches 5D body with soft padding. Since the grip uses the same material, they look and feel more integrated. When shooting for events, the combination looks more professional. For people who shoot events, sport, wide life and portrait often, this is almost a must have item. Changing battery some times means missing good shots. For people who don’t shoot for long sessions or primarily landscaping shooting or architectural /interior photography and those who would like to travel light, this is nice to have but not as critical as the above group of photographers. For this group, the purchase price can be used towards alternative such as: 580EX flash or 50mm F1.8, 85mm F1.8 or 28-135mm IS.

A must have

Strengths:

Extra finger room when shooting horizontal

Posted Dec 28, 2006 - It is a good addition to my Eos 5D but there are several issues: - Extra finger room when shooting horizontal, additional shutter and buttons when shooting vertical, more autonomy. - It is way too expensive for just what it is (see below) and compared to the BG-E3 and BP-50 battery grips I previously owned. - While Japan made and heavy, it is poorly build: I swear one can see though it at the cam/grip junction as well as through the mounting screw. Also the battery door looks more than fragile and I am counting days before it breaks open. - It should be available as part of a kit with the camera--apart from the 'body-only' version--for those interested in a taller body and a 2 battery capacity, - Its design is bulkier compared to the elegant bottom of an Eos 1D Mark II: it is thicker, less comfortable (edges) and the mounting screw is awful. - The 5D's body should have been designed a bit taller (a bit like the 1D Mark II) that would save money and avoid mounting such an extra bulky part on the 5D body--again, awful and unconvenient when one has to mount/unmount it often; a major design caveat. Bottom line: a must have but ONLY if you often shoot vertical.

Canon BG-E4 Get it only if you really need it!

Strengths:

Extended battery life, provides nice balance to the camera, vertical shooting.

Weaknesses:

Heavy, no exposure lock, big, very expensive, no weather sealing.

Posted 1 year ago - As the professional photographer who shoots weddings I would recommend this grip for anybody who is shooting with 5D all day. You wouldn’t have to worry about batteries during your photo shoot at all. But there are few drawbacks, like extra weight, price, and size. So weight your needs and your wants and if you shoot occasionally then you really don’t need this grip. But if you are somebody like me who shoots weddings then go ahead and grab one, you want regret it.

Get a GRIP

Strengths:

Construction is like that of the 5D itself. Sturdy. Handling of heavy 2.8 glass is now balanced. Added Portrait buttons vertically.

Weaknesses:

Base feels a little better than that of the 1D series builtin grip.

Posted Nov 28, 2007 - Get the grip if you have bigger hands, have heavy glass, and need the extra battery power to work with. Awesome product by Canon. It never comes off my camera now.
