Posted Oct 22, 2003 - I have had zero problems with this unit. It has performed flawlessly since I bought it. I just bought another for a different room. I highly recommed DirecTV over any cable system. If you choose to get DirecTV or are a current DirecTV customer, you must add this receiver to atleast one of your viewing rooms. The TiVo service will change your life. It puts TV on your schedule and is very easy to use. I watch what I want to watch when I want to watch it and since everything is recorded, I am able to skip thru all commercials. Also, the ability to Pause Live TV is priceless.

Tivo with DIRECTV, is the greatest thing to ever h ...

Strengths:

Pause Live TV, fast forward, and rewind.

None that I can think of.

Posted May 11, 2003 - Tivo with DIRECTV, is the greatest thing to ever happen to TV! I don't get it where some people say that the Tivo with DIRECTV is noisy? I can barely hear it running. All I hear is a fan and my RCA 4 head VCR is louder then my Tivo. This is the best thing that I have bought since I bought my computer. The Tivo with DIRECTV changed my whole viewing experience. I use to record every NASCAR Winston Cup race every Sunday using my RCA VCR. Then when I come home from Church, I would have to wait for the race to finish, so I could rewind the tape and watch it from the beginning. Now with Tivo I don't have to do that anymore. I'll just come home and go to my "Now Playing List" and watch the race from the beginning while it is still recording. No VCR can do that!!

Strengths:

never miss another one of your favorite tv shows again. easy to use and setup.

Weaknesses:

instuctions on recording not detailed enough. they give you the basics, but no troubleshooting if they don't work. have to figure it out on your own. remote not as good as original directv's remote.

Pretty easy to setup and get started, but instruct ...

Strengths:

Easy setup, easy to use, "season pass" feature, conflict alert

Weaknesses:

Remote, instructions on use are sketchy

Posted Feb 7, 2003 - Pretty easy to setup and get started, but instructions for use are a little sketchy. Searching for programs is relatively easy and "save to tape" option is simple to use, and the "season pass" option is a real plus. The remote is not designed very well. The channel numbers are at the very bottom making it difficult to press them with the thumb. Arrows for guide navigation are combined into one button making it very easy to go in another direction than intended. The select button is much to close to the navigation button and easy to accidentlly press. However, I like it better than the Panasonic ShowStopper that I previously owned. I have not owned the product long enough to experience any mechanical or customer service problems that there may be.

Posted Oct 16, 2003 - I love the functionality of the unit but my HDVR2 died after about a month. I called Hughes to get a replacement and was told that one would arrive in about 6 to 8 weeks! ***NO TV FOR 2 MONTHS*** I asked why so long and was told that "HDVR2 Sales are very good" and "Inventory is being allocated to New Sales not Service" Word to the wise... Never buy anything from a company (Like Hughes) that puts new sales so blatantly ahead of supporting their existing customers.

Strengths:

TIVO PVR is a great feature. Easy to use. Digital. If your AVR system is digital throw away your VCR and go TIVO

Weaknesses:

The Direct TV side of the combo is the weakness. When compared to the Executive Director Pack receivers this one is a joke. Very cumbersome menus. No caller ID. No Turbo Tune.

Posted Jul 10, 2003 - The Direct TV/Tivo combination is alluring to those who want to get into digital recording cheaply. Tivo makes it easy too. If you are a previous Direct TV subscriber who has used Hughes receivers you will likely be disappointed with the TiVo Series 2- HDVR2. The Direct TV menus for the satellite programming are very cumbersome. You lose neat features like caller ID, on screen Turbo Tune, surfing channels while watching still programming. There are features within TIVO that are meant to be equivalent to the Turbo Tune but really miss the mark as far as convenience in channel access. You still get Dolby Digital audio output, but that's it. While the TiVo Series 2- HDVR2 is a great idea and cheap, Hughes has removed too many features from the traditional receiver software to make it work from probably both a functional and a cost standpoint. Very disappointing.
