Strengths:

big lcd, great quality pics, user-friendly, love the thumbnails option, and the battery lasts longer than my last (1 hour vs 30 minutes)

Posted Dec 13, 2007 - I love the Canon Powershot series and they just get better and better, more and more affordable. The SD1000, digital elph has not disappointed. This one has improved viewing features, a big lcd screen, and the battery lasts about an hour.

Posted Jan 3, 2008 - Great functionality, would recommend for most occasions. The last camera I had was a Fuji which did disappoint from time to time. But after four months of use, so far so good with this excellent Canon.

Posted Dec 31, 2007 - I really like this camera! It is easy to use, very easy to get started with, and user-friendly. The pictures come out very clear. The menus are easy to use. There is red-eye reduction right on the camera! (no image software needed)

Strengths:

Intuitive, great image quality, small charger, small/lightweight, time-lapse movie

Weaknesses:

awkward zoom control, slightly flimsy playback/capture-mode switch (but no big deal really).

Posted Apr 27, 2007 - Lots of great features, and size/weight is fantastic. Images are crisp and sharp. Big LCD is nice. Love the small charger, so you can take it on the road [battery charger has plug prongs that fold out of the plastic charger; no extra charger cable to carry]. Camera starts FAST and takes pics immediately. Time-Lapse Movie mode is completely cool!! Slightly flimsy playback/capture-mode switch (but no big deal really). Overall I LOVE the camera. I posted a review on expoTV.com.

Posted Dec 10, 2007 - Overall, a great digital camera. Bought it right before a trip to Europe and was very satisfied with the camera and impressed by the quality of the pictures that came out. Its small, light, and durable. Has lots of interesting features and manual settings that make it easy (once you've figured everything out) to get great shots- even of the lit up Eiffel Tower at night. Unfortunately, the camera got stolen at a later occasion. I am going to buy the same one again. Would highly recommend it- especially for the price.

Posted Mar 29, 2007 - For years I have tried several small (pocket sized) cameras and I have been very dissatisfied with their response time, that is the time from when you push the shutter release to when the picture is taken. I am spoiled by a great film camera and a very good, very expensive digital camera (Canon 1DMKII) that is to big and heavy for everyday vacationing. Just before a trip where I wanted to photograph my nieces and nephew I found this gem. It focused pretty fast in the store and the image quality looked great. I bought it on the spot (it's cheap also) and took it out west. To my delight the camera worked great, the focus is fast and accurate. The face identification algorithms works terrificly and gives excellent results. The shots of the kids capture the moment that I wanted and are clear and crisp. The movies are even great. Not as good as with a "real" videocam but far more than usable. The stills and video clips of the kids are better than those my sister (with a Canon 20D) caught since this one was always ready, hers was generally in its case. There is a lot in this camera, in terms of image processing (it can remove red-eye before printing for example), film speed for low light pictures, and help with shooting (the face recognition software gets the focus in the right target quickly), and with its small size it fits into my pocket and is ready to shoot in seconds. I probably got more and b etter shots that I would have managed with my big camera and certainly much better results that I could have gotten with my old S500 or A3. I heartily recommend this model to anyone short of a pro on a big money job (where it could be a second line backup).

Posted Nov 30, 2007 - I would normally shoot with Canon dSLR's but I found having a point and shoot for everyday shots, is very useful. I travel a lot for work and like to take my camera with me because I never know what I'll see. Instead of lugging my dSLR and lenses, having this in my pocket does the trick. I've even taken this with me on my dSLR shoots because in case I didn't have time to change a lens or something. The image quality is good and the it uses the same Digic image processor (III) as the XTi, 40D, and Mark D dSLR's. It doesn't have Image Stabilization or support RAW mode. The Canon A470 supports RAW. But I guess RAW and a point and shoot could be an oxymoron. LOL You'll love this camera if you want a simple to use camera that can fit in your pocket. Again the image quality is superb.

Posted May 17, 2007 - As a loyal canon customer I have tried most of the models of canon sd series. Comparing to previous models this camera is light and sturdy. Unlike SD630 its compact and thinner. Image quality is bright and crisp even at the darkest places.

2 Star Review Great Size, Sub-Par Images.

Posted Sep 17, 2007 - I was so excited to purchase this camera and then after a couple photo outings and taking over 200 pics on 3 separate trips, I noticed a few common issues. In bright sunlight the images are all washed out, all the highlights are completely blown out. Conversely, in dark settings there is significant noise and grain in the pictures. You literally have to have perfect light balance when using this camera to get good pictures, otherwise they are just sub-par quality. The camera does have some redeeming qualities. It's very small and fits comfortably in your front pants pocket. Operation is lightning quick and the LCD screen is impressive. I guess I'm just a camera snob and appreciate higher quality images. I can tell you that I purchase the Canon A560 to replace this for half the price and the images are much better quality. Strengths:

Small and compact hidden in pockets, boxy and sexy design, Digic III Face Detection, ISO Below 100 -- lowest is 80.

Weaknesses:

32mb SD card, plastic and flimsy battery cover, no IS and viewfinder, no RAW, proprietary and short battery life.

Posted Jun 4, 2008 - The user interface is user-friendly, very much the same as Powershot models. I have so much fun with MACRO on flowers, animals, and still figurine. The button layout is easy to figure out (easily fat-finger). The Face Detection option allows an amateur like me to get a great photo of the family, friends at a party, and so on. Get at least a gig for memory. The included 32mb SD is a joke. It is like using a low density 5.25" floppy disk. It gets fill up after snapping several 7mp pictures or less than minute of video. One minor downside -- when the battery warning comes on it means that you have 1-2 more pics and then it shuts off. I ordered another battery ahead of time and it was worth it. The battery takes between 30 and 40 minutes to fully charge.

2 Star Review Fuzzy pictures

Posted May 24, 2007 - I'm no amateur. This thing takes fuzzy, poorly focused pictures. I have taken hundreds of test shot with all sorts of different settings. I am truly sorry to say I have sent this camera back to Canon for repair because of this focus problem. I have owned a Canon Elph A400 and it takes very sharp pictures. The SD1000 simply cannot do it. Do not buy this camera.

Posted Feb 29, 2008 - I recieved this yesterday (2/28/08) and immediately began experimenting with it. So far its a great pocket size camera. Images are sharp and crisp, and it's light and small enough to fit inside a pant or ski jacket pocket for a day on the slopes. (I bought this for that very reason as last weekend I took my Niece skiing for the first time and only had a lousy disposable camera to record the weekend with.) The fact that I had this in my pants pocket all afternoon and forgot it was there bedcause it's so small and unobtrusive was a major plus. Oh and by the way, it take GREAT pictures too!

3 Star Review Zoom is not so good

the zoom sucks...sorry but have to be blunt about it. It really failed me on a recent trip to Africa

Posted Feb 22, 2008 - Hadn't thought much about the zoom feature as I am not a camera wizard, just your average user. I have been very satisfied up until the most recent trip I took. Used the zoom quite a bit and now that I am home, looking at the pictures on the computer, I am very disappointed with the zoom photos. Many of my photos were within 30 feet if not closer and I used the zoom simply to get more detail when in fact they are quite blurry. I played with every feature that even closely resembled zoom but with no luck. I like everything about the camera except the zoom...
