4 Star Review Overall great camera

Strengths:

Swivel/flip LCD, manual controls, accepts add-on lenses, optical viewfinder, produces nice pictures, accepts AA batteries and CompactFlash, PictBridge support

Weaknesses:

Relatively small screen, flash takes a while to recharge at times, prominent ISO noise above 200, tends to have blown-out highlights and fringing

Posted Jun 2, 2006 - Having previously owned a Powershot A70 and had a good experience with it, I expected as much from the A95. It delivered. I particularly like the ability to select manual exposure, white balance, focus, etc., which you don't see on too many cameras. I have only a few concerns. First of all, there is noticeable fringing in some shots, especially those taken indoors with bright fluorescent lighting. Also, there is prominent ISO noise above 200 (with a range of 50-400). Autofocusing is slower than more modern cameras, but that's to be expected of anything that's seen a few years in production. Overall, I am satisfied with this camera; I just wish it were a bit faster.

5 Star Review Great camera

Strengths:

Good pictures, Easy to use, Lot of options

Weaknesses:

a bit bulky, needs four battery.

Posted Nov 25, 2005 - This is a great camera. Picture quality is very good. It uses 4 AA batteries for power, so it is a bit heavy. The upside to this is that it has very good battery life. I would have liked if greater optical zoom is available in this model. Overall, this is one of the best point-and-shoot digital cameras you can buy. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Strengths:

High quality 5MP pictures, Camera feels great in hand, swivel LCD screen, best bang for the buck camera.

Weaknesses:

Included 32MB CF card is too small.

Posted Oct 27, 2004 - This camera is awesome. I upgraded from a Canon A70 and it was well worth the money. The Canon A95 uses 4 AA bateries, but it eats through normal alkalines way too fast. I highly recommend getting rechargeable NiMH AA batteries and a quick charger. The swivel screen is a major plus, it's 1.8" compared to 1.5" from the Canon A70. The screen is also higher resolution than the A70. I have used the camera for 3 weeks and printed about 50 pics so far. The pics look great and I even cropped to zoom in on some pictures and you couldn't see any sign of pixelation. I love the manual flexibility with this camera, plus the automatic modes make it easy for anyone to use. The camera has a nice solid feel to it and fits well in the hand. I prefer the Canon A95's size rather than the ultra compact cameras like Sony's T1 because you can easily hold the camera in one hand and take pics. But if you have an ultra compact camera, you have to hold it awkward and it my easily fall from your hand. I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking into getting a 5MP camera that's affordable, flexible, and normal size.

5 Star ReviewCanon's successor to the popular A80 improves on i ...

Strengths:

Excellent image quality. High resolution swivel LCD. Lots of new scene modes. Uses widely available AA batteries.

Weaknesses:

Slightly noisier images than the A80, it's predecessor. Not the lightest camera available.

Posted Dec 2, 2004 - Canon's successor to the popular A80 improves on it's predeccessor in many ways. The most noticable upgrade is the new five megapixel CCD sensor, a one megapixel increase from the A80. This resolution upgrade does lead to slightly noiser images, but the difference is minimal. The A95 retains the swivel screen of the A80, but improves on it. The screen is now 1.8", up from 1.5" on the A80. The screen is easy to view in most lighting conditions - it is significantly higher resolution than the A80 screen, and the size upgrade makes it much easier on the eyes. The A95 has a compact, mostly metal body; it has a very solid feel to it. It is larger than the Digital Elph line, but smaller than Canon's G5/G6/S60/S70 cameras - it's a nice compromise between the two. The A95 nicely merges many of the features on Canon's higher end cameras with "stick it in you pocket" compactness the Digital Elph line offers. The A95 isn't the lightest camera around, because it uses four AA batteries for power. The upside to this is the outstanding battery life with rechargable NiMH batteries - I can get off several hundred shots with one set. AA's are so widely available compared with the propietary Lithium Ion battery packs that most cameras offer - you'll always be able to buy some alkalines in a pinch if your batteries run out. Image quality is simply excellent, much like the A80. Images are sharp, colors are excellent. I would have liked to have the 3X zoom lens start at a wider angle, but that's a minor complaint. Overall, this is one of the best point-and-shoot digital cameras you can buy. Highly recommended.

5 Star ReviewThis is the best digital camera in its price range ...

Strengths:

Excellent quality pictures, Nice flip out LCD display, compact, very easy to use, various shooting modes, price, mainly higher battery life with NiMH rechargeble battery

Weaknesses:

limited 3X zoom, Compact flash card slot, bundle should include AC adapter

Posted Nov 4, 2004 - This is the best digital camera in its price range. It gives you all professional camera features and quality, yet much cheaper than expensive 8 megapixel digital cameras. Specifically, I am impressed with the picture quality of this camera, which is equal to expensive 8 megapixal cameras (which i have used for some time). Extra megapixals donot do anything in improving picture quality. To pay 400-500 dollars more for 8 megapixal cameras is not worth. I have used Nikon Coolpix 990 and Canon powershot A80 in last 3 years. Canon A95 is the best of all digital cameras I have seen. Its LCD screen is big and just fabulous in compare to A80. Red eye could be a problem but can be corrected with software OR just delete that picture and take another one !!!. If you make person not to look in camera, most of the red eye problems can be solved. Canon should give an option of saving pictures in RAW or TIFF format in this camera. Overall, I will strongly recommend this camera for everyone besides professional photographers.

Strengths:

on/off switch, multiple shooting setting i.e. fast moving objects, light weight, most controls are intuitive if you have had digitals before. Love the tilting/rotating view finder. No lens caps!

Weaknesses:

the doors to batteries and CF slot seem flimsy.

Posted Nov 1, 2004 - I take pictures for the local animal shelter. There are several inherent issues - 1) the dogs and puppies don't really like to pose. You have "grab" shots so the setting for fast moving subjects has been wonderful. 2) often there is low light and this camera will let me take pictures in low light with a fast enough shutter speed that there is little to no motion blur. So far I love it. There are several things that I am getting used to just because they are different. I moved from a Minolta Dimage 404.

Strengths:

Compact, very easy to learn how to use, takes great pictures. Many different adjustments available.

Weaknesses:

Regular AA batteries don't last very long. Can't tell how much power is left until you need to replace. No other weaknesses as I can tell!

Posted Oct 6, 2004 - I'm really glad I waited a few years until this camera came along. This is a great digital camera that you can grow into. There are many adjustments that I haven't tried out yet. You can also purchase wider and longer zoom lense and other accessories. The adjustable flip screen is fantastic as you don't need to become a contourtionist to get a good angle for your photo. I don't know why other cameras don't have it. Think of your camcorder with the flip screen. Try taking movies without your flip screen. That would be tough! Camera size and weight is perfect for me compared to other cameras that are too small and awkward to hold and shoot. Smaller cameras tend to move when you're taking the picture. After taking photos at an all day workshop, I was able to quickly download the program from the CD and upload my digital pictures with no problems. It was very easy to do! The regular AA really do not last very long if you're taking quality pictures. You definately want to purchase the NiHm rechargeable batteries.

Strengths:

Everything!

Weaknesses:

Can be noisy when zooming in and out.

Posted Nov 9, 2004 - I love this camera! The pictures are wonderful! I was originally looking at a Kodak and had the chance to try out a few. They seemed great and very easy to use. But then I got my hands on this canon and could not believe how much better the picture quality was! It was a thousand times better than any other camera I have tried out. It is a great point and shoot on the automatic setting for beginners but also has tons of manual settings for those who crave control. This is by far the best deal for the money at this point in time. Also, there are lots of add ons you can get like lenses and underwater cases etc. I would recommend this camera to ANYONE beginner or not because of its wonderful picture quality and great features!

Strengths:

Great picture quality. Easy transfer to my computer or other applications. My first digital and has been so much easier because of the comprehensive manuel included--excellent camera.

Weaknesses:

So far-- I have seen no weaknesses. I couldn't be happier.

Posted Dec 27, 2004 - I had done much research on digital cameras. Reading reviews on CNET, in PC World Magazine, as well as PC Magazine. This Canon PowerShot A95 has all you need to get started without being intimidated; but plenty of features that can expand your picture taking abilities as time goes by. I am impressed with the picture quality and the ease of use this camera offers. Even a novice like myself can take fantastic pitures; with minimal starting expertise. It also gives me room to grow as my knowledge of digital photography expands. I highly recommend the A95 to anyone looking for a great camera at a very reasonable investment.

Strengths:

Great pictures, tons of manual controls, solidly built, flip-out LCD

Weaknesses:

Redeye, not a great bundle

Posted Sep 10, 2004 - First off, I'm a beginner to photography, so I may not have the eye for details others have. However, I'm very impressed w/ the picture quality. I've read some reviews that say the picture quality isn't as good as the A80's quality (same lens + more megapixels = more noise), but I haven't noticed it. I had an A80 for a bit, but had to return it, and then got the A95. I loved the A80, and love this one even more. The larger LCD is much more crisp, which is a bonus. I don't fully use the manual controls now, but plan to "grow into them". I bought some NiMH rechargeable batteries, and they hold up great (you'll get maybe 20 pictures w/ the supplied alkeline batteries before tossing them). Besides the door over the compact flash (which is kinda flimsy), the camera feels solid and well built. The menus and layout for the camera are simple enough. The manual is well written and easy to understand. Things I'm not a fan of: besides the great software, the bundle it comes w/ is very unexciting. No rechargeable batteries or anything of the sort. Just an average bundle. Also, there is noticeable redeye in many of the indoor photos, but those can be removed via the software, or you can just delete it and shoot another picture (which is why I'm switching to d-cam to begin with). Overall, I would recommend buying this camera. Lots of features for a reasonable price.

Strengths:

Great compact camera that fairly easy to use. Swivel LCD makes the camera highly flexible for a variety of shooting situations. Addition of manual controls cover all types of shooting conditions.

Weaknesses:

The manual could be better written. The memory that comes with the camera is too small to be really useful. You'll need to upgrade the memory.

Posted Nov 27, 2004 - This is a great camera for the price. (I was able to get it on-line for $294.00) The body is comfortable to hold due to its shape. I can't say enough about the swivel LCD monitor. I've been able to take facial portraits of myself and another person by pointing the camera around to face us and all the while monitoring the framing of the shot with the LCD swiveled towards us. It also helps when shooting odd angle shots above or below your head level. The point and shoot AUTO mode is pretty reliable in terms of producing good output. The fun comes when you explore the manual settings. It allows for another level of creativity. The software that comes with the camera is easy to use and does a pretty good job of removing red-eye from shoots that the camera doesn't manage to get rid of. If you spend enough time with the written manual (which needs to be written a bit better) you can really have fun with this camera above and beyond the point and click mode.

Weaknesses:

None.

Posted Sep 27, 2004 - I have been researching digital cameras for over a year, waiting for the perfect camera. In my opinion, the A95 is it. I am not a professional photographer, but wanted something simple, yet reliable, easy to use with good picture quality. I almost bought the A80, but really wanted that extra megapixel. Then the A95 came out and at $350 it is a steal. Picture quality is great and I love the flip LCD display.

Strengths:

Great camera for the price. The larger swivel screen is great. Great shooting modes, and camera is easy to use but has features of the higher end cameras.

Weaknesses:

Night shots and bright bright sunlight shots weren't what I had hoped. My major complaint is that even with the bigger screen sometimes pictures that seem clear on the camera aren't when developed.

Posted Dec 3, 2004 - I've had the camera for about 6 months in which time I've been on vacation to Asia and had a chance to use many of the camera's 14 shooting modes. I was pretty impressed with the functionality of it and the simplicity of getting great shots. The only complaints are that sometimes pictures that seem clear on the screen are blurry when they are developed. The other main complaint is that the mode for shooting night shots isn't as great as I had hoped, I have only had a few awesome ones out of many many night shots. The underwater shots and panoramic shots (with a filter) have made up for it though. Overall this is a great camera and I am going to purchase one for my brother for christmas because he likes it too. On vacation many have been impressed with the quality of the pictures out of a pocket camera and said they are going to buy one too. So far out of the cameras I've seen on vacation nikon, kodak, etc. pocket cameras I've converted other fellow vacationers to switch to this.
