5 Star Review Canon SD870IS is a revelation in its class!

Strengths:

Huge beautiful 3" LCD, nonreflective screen, image stabilization, wide angle , SDHC AND MMC-HC compatibility, ultra fast startup/stop/shot transition times, intuitive controls, 1-handed operation

Weaknesses:

No optical viewfinder, paltry optical zoom, night capture noisy at ISO > 400, no dedicated aperture/shutter priority modes,

Posted Jan 10, 2008 - This camera is by far the best sub-$300 compact point shooter in its class bar none. From the large 3" LCD screen with great resolution to transflective screen to intuitive, user-friendly controls, to the classy and lightweight aluminum bezel and nice strong flash, this camera is suitable for use indoors or outdoors for a wide variety of purposes. I use it at parties and a recent outdoor graduation of my brother. My 65-year-old non-techie mom picked up this camera and within 15 minutes had figured out how to use the time-delay, turn off flash, turn on date-stamp, and change SD cards. That's saying a lot about how inherently intuitive this camera's control is. It's responsive to the light touch at the control wheel, but not overly so. Compared to the Sony cameras that use the touch-screen controls, this unit is more forgiving if the finger brushes against the wheel by accident. The viewfinder screen automatically rotates when transitioning from landscape to portrait modes. There is no optical viewfinder, but in a camera of this small size (fits my shirt pocket with ease) that has to be sacrificed for the big LCD screen. There is also no A/S priority modes, but IMHO Canon wisely left these manual modes out to appeal to this camera's intended customer. However, please note that while image stabilization works well with lower ISO settings (100-200), beyond 400 you will start noticing more blurring. This is more evident under low light, where all cameras of this class suffer. Compared to my older SD750 and the Sony Cybershot DSC-W200, the SD870IS's low light performance exceeds my expectation and produces decent shots at ISO 800 in a typical halogen-lighted dining room or fluorescent-lighted kitchen. Do not attempt to use this camera in a bedroom though, you will be disappointed. Compared to its all silver brethren, this black version offers only one important difference: it is compatible with both SDHC and MMC-HC cards. while the silver can only handle SD cards. This effectively allows me to use higher capacity 4gb and 8gb cards. I have tried to use this camera's movie mode and was surprised at its smooth framerate and VGA-quality picture. It will allow for continuous shots for those inclined to shoot fast action, even though the SD870IS is generally not intended for that purpose. For those who enjoy larger poster size prints, get the SD950IS. It has a smaller LCD screen (2.5") but is 12-megapixel compared to this camera's 8.0.

5 Star Review Fabulous ultra-compact camera

Strengths:

28mm wide angle is the most important factor I chose this model over other compact camera. 3 inch LCD monitor is really nice and easy to see. Adjustable focus area.

Weaknesses:

Pricey.

Posted Feb 3, 2008 - After using it for a month which I upgraded from my Canon A95. I wanted a small camera that I could take on the road with me and this SD 870IS is perfect. It lacks a lot of the manual settings of my A95, but has much more to contribute. Large screen, IS, face detection, fairly fast power on/first shot time, and good night/indoor shots are features you need to get a good photo which this camera can provide you all. Wide angle lens is very good for taking a scene picture. I think this camera is the best in its class. If you owned a canon camera, you don’t need to spend time to learn this camera at all.

5 Star Review An amazing point and shoot

Strengths:

Compact size, 3" screen, power up time, quick memory write

Weaknesses:

Flash is fairly small. Screen is hard to see in sun.

Posted 1 year ago - I purchased the SD870 to replace my old Powershot S40. I was pleasantly surprised by the vast improvements that Canon has made on their point and shoot cameras over the years. This camera is very light and small, yet has a big and bright 3" screen. The unit powers on in less than a second and is ready to take pictures. Your shots are written to the memory card so fast, that you can take sequential shots without even using the sports mode. The image stabilization also keeps your shots properly focused. The pictures that come out on this camera are truly amazing. The color balance and brightness make your shots look professional. The screen is really hard to see in sunlight, but that's the drawback you have with no viewfinder (does anyone use a viewfinder anymore?). The only main compromise from this compact camera is the flash is fairly small. Some of my indoor shots come out slightly dark and blurry. Overall, you can't beat the quality of this camera for the money. You'll need to upgrade to a DSLR to create better shots!

5 Star Review Wow, what a camera!

Strengths:

Huge screen, great software, excellent form factor.

Weaknesses:

Proprietary battery, no optical viewfinder.

Posted Nov 24, 2007 - This is the ultimate camera for portable point and shoot capability. The wide angle lens, megapixel count, and optical zoom are among the best in the market. The form factor is great. The software is Canon's, which is the best around. The only drawbacks are the lack of an optical viewfinder (to make room for the gigantic 3 inch LCD), and the proprietary battery (as opposed to simple AAs). These are not big enough drawbacks for me not to give the camera 5 stars.

5 Star Review Excellent compact camera

Strengths:

Fast startup time, fast pic-to-pic times, BIG LCD, good battery life, great pictures.

Weaknesses:

Would like aperture priority and shutter priority modes.

Posted Dec 18, 2007 - This is a great little pocket camera. I have owned a number of ELPH's over the years and when my last one (SD300) was stolen, I decided to get this one for my wife and I. This ELPH is a pleasure to use. Since it is SDHC compatible, we got a 4-GB card and basically can take pictures to our hearts' content. Since we have such a high-capacity card, I have also been using the burst mode feature quite a bit, which has yielded some great action shots of our son. Another thing I really like about this camera is the wide angle lens. The wide angle really helps with landscape shots and group shots, which is what we typically use this camera for. If you get a chance, compare the field of view on this unit versus a non-wide angle compact and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I wanted to say one thing about the "weakness" I mentioned. I don't know of any digital cameras in this size class that have aperture or shutter priority, so this is not really a weakness, but a feature request/wish. Bottomline? Small, great pictures, fast, good battery, and easy for my wife to use.

5 Star Review Canon's best ELPH EVER

Strengths:

Sharp photos with great color saturation Optical image stabilization Speedy shot-to-shot time for an ultra-compact Bright 3" screen that's easy to view in all lighting situations Great movie m

Weaknesses:

No optical viewfinder

Posted Nov 14, 2007 - This camera replaced my trusty SD630. I loved the SD630, but I wanted to upgrade to something with image stabilization. To put it simply, the SD870 totally rocks! The 3" screen is beautiful to behold. It's even viewable outside with bright sunlight shining directly on it. And the pictures this thing takes are absolutely gorgeous! They are sharp as a tack, and the colors are spot on. I have to say, the image stabilization really makes a big difference, particularly when you are shooting in low light. I also like the new, wide-angle lens. It really comes in handy when taking group shots or shooting in close quarters. The only negative I can come up with is the lack of an optical viewfinder. I guess this is a sacrifice you have to make in order to get a screen this big on such a small camera.

5 Star Review Great Camera

Strengths:

Cool point and shoot with "wide angle". Very handy, good design. IS feature helps with shots at night and fast moving objects. Pre-set scene and my color effects are quite useful

Weaknesses:

Lack of manual control, no optical view finder. Quite expensive

Posted Nov 30, 2007 - I owned Canon Ixus 400, which was purchased 6 years ago so I think that it's the time for a major upgrade. After going through many review sites, I found that Canon SD 870 IS is one of the best point and shoot that is recommended by experts. As a big Canon fan, I find that the menus and functions are easy to operate and user-friendly. However, I think that Canon should have some brief guiding for rooky-digital camera users. Also, the touch wheel is somewhat not that useful and I would definitely trade that with the optical view finder. Other than this, the rest is great.

5 Star Review Little giant

Strengths:

Small, fast, durable, beautiful

Weaknesses:

couldn't find so far

Posted Nov 17, 2007 - I bought this camera as a replacement for S400. What a big step! Absolutely beautiful camera, very fast start, huge LCD, image stabilization, good battery life. I'm generally very picky but couldn't find any weakness so far. Very convenient interface, I shouldn't even look in the manual too often. I thought that lack of view-finder can be a problem but apparently not.

2 Star Review Blurry pictures without flash, color is off, neat close-up pics, face detection not great...

Strengths:

Good close-up/macro pictures, neat horizontal/vertical display orientation

Weaknesses:

Blurry pictures without flash, no shadow flash, white balance/color is not close to real life, face detection not good, image stabilization

Posted Apr 10, 2008 - This camera produces blurry pictures, unless you only take pictures with flash. Doesn't matter what settings you choose or anything, the pictures will be blurry unless you can get your subject to be very still (which kids, pets, and most adults don't do well). So much for image stabilization. The white balance color compared to real life is off when it comes to pictures indoors under incandescent/fluorescent lighting and selecting the different white balance settings doesn't help much. It does have good close-up/macro pictures with good detail. But if you are into that kind of picture-taking you should probably just go with a dSLR camera, not a point-and-shoot. Another neat thing is that it has a vertical/horizontal sensor for the display. If you tilt the camera vertically while viewing a picture, the picture will tilt the way you tilted the camera (except upside-down). There's no flash for shadows, only standard and no-flash. The face detection works ok, even though a lot of times if even just some hair is in someone's face or if they aren't looking right in the direction of the camera it won't detect their face. I don't like this camera, and will be sending it back for a different one. I doubt I will be buying another Canon after this...

5 Star Review Excellent Camera

Strengths:

Photo quality, LCD size/clarity, build, zoom length

Weaknesses:

None

Posted 1 year ago - This is the second time I've owned a Canon SD870 IS. I stopped using the 1st one because I could not get indoor people photos in the winter to turn out when there is no nature light flowing in. I believe now I failed to allow the camera to auto adjust the ISO or that I did not try the right settings. I am trying this for the second time with better results and reading the manual all the way through. The photos are exactly like I was hoping and its auto setting takes great pictures MOST of the time, all one asks. It is able to light up a room with no flash (daylight room) with noise at ISO 800, or able to take it clearly with flash (no noise). I tried Canon SD790, Fuji F100fd, Panasonic DMC-TZ4, and Canon SD850. This one will take my indoor photos as well. The Panasonic takes at least as good outdoors, but this Canon is close to it/equal and better than the others. There are accessible settings on this camera, the zoom range is handy, the battery lasts well and has an indicator on screen. The LCD is beautiful. It's well made and the sensor and programming work as intended. This is a keeper, I highly recommend it!

5 Star Review Canon PowerShot SD 870 IS

Strengths:

Compact size.Excellent LCD display.High quality images.

Weaknesses:

No external viewfinder.

Posted Jan 29, 2008 - This is an excellent choice for a compact camera. The build quality is excellent, and the viewfinder is crystal clear and viewable at multiple angles. The menus are easy to navigate and offer plenty of camera control. The only minor issue is there is no external viewfinder.

5 Star Review Compact yet powerful

Strengths:

Bright 3" LCD, wide angle lens, compact size, affordable price

Weaknesses:

No optical viewfinder; Camera body is easy to get scratched.

Posted Dec 23, 2007 - I spent a while looking for a new digital camera to replace my 5-year-old Nikon 4500 which is huge and heavy. One of my criteria was wide angle lens, so Canon Powershot SD870 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 were my two final options. I originally almost fell for Panasonic because of its Leika lens, 10X zoom and a cheaper price. Luckily, a visit to Bestbuy to check a real product before an online purchase gave me a second thought about it. Costing a little, Canon SD870 looks much better than Panasonic TZ3. While I could not compare the quality of photographs from the two cameras, I believe Canon SD870's much thinner, lighter body would definitely make a difference in the frequency of use so I went for it. ..... After a couple weeks of use, Canon SD870 didn't disappoint me. Its various shooting options are fun to play with. I'm impressed with the Indoor shooting mode, which works so well with both indoor shots and outdoor night scenes. The movie mode does a great job with sharp videos. The touch control button is a bit difficult to figure out how to use, but works fine once you are familiar with it. I like the My Colors option which allows shooting images and movies in color accents. So far, I love what I have experienced with the camera. A friend of mine who took some photos for me thought he would get one too. I haven't tried printing out the images and seeing the actual image quality. I hope it's as good as what I see in the LCD and laptop. I would recommend this camera to anyone.
