The Canon SX20 IS is a worthy successor to the popular SX10 IS camera. It retains many of the great features that made the SX10 IS popular while improving in several key areas. Like its predecessor, the SX20 delivers extra sharp, detailed images and features an incredibly long 20x optical zoom lens that gets you super close to subjects. Canon has also upped the resolution from 10 to 12.1 megapixels. Low ISO performance on the camera is very good, and it performs well at higher ISO settings as well. The flash range is slightly improved over the previous model when using automatic ISO sensitivity. Performance is snappy with low shutter lag and face shot-to-shot times. The SX20 is equipped with an excellent viewfinder and offers comprehensive manual controls for advanced photographers, as well as a plethora of scene modes and face detection for less experienced photographers. Canon has further upped the ante by including an HD (720p) movie mode in this model – a much requested feature not found in the SX10. High Definition output, via HDMI, is available for easily playing back movies on an HDTV. Movies are saved as MOV files, using H.264 compression, and the camera supports SDHC high-capacity memory cards (up to 32GB). There is no shortage of competitors in the crowded ultra-zoom camera market, but the SX20 IS helps Canon maintain its position at the top.
