Strengths:Excellent picture quality. Large and easy to read menu. Quick adjustment wheels. Long battery life. Wide selection of lenses. Great compatibility with past Nikon products.
Weaknesses:Heavy. Only 6.1 mega-pixel.
Posted Jun 29, 2005 - This is an update to Nikon's very popular D70 (much like a car model is updated every two years). It's pretty much the same camera as D70, the improvements are made based on the feedback from existing D70 users.
Just like the D70, this camera has excellent picture quality. Comparing the photo quality of D70 and D70s, the D70s seems a bit more colorful, but the difference is barely noticeable. A big improvement to D70s is the LCD screen and the menu system. The screen is large and colorful. The menu is very intuitive and easy to navigate. I also like how they they added lighting to the display panel on the top of the camera, making night shoots a lot easier. Just like on D70, the scroll wheels on D70s is great when you need to quickly adjust settings to the camera. The built in flash also works better.
Now, things I don't like about the D70s. The camera has 6.1 mega-pixels. I know it's very unlikely I'll be printing pictures bigger than 11X14, but I still wish the camera can offer more. The camera is also a little heavy. D70s is slightly heavier than the D70, and much heavier than the Rebel XT. However, consider the Rebel XT has a plastic body, I feel more comfortable in knowing my camera is more sturdy.
Overall, D70s is an excellent camera. If you already have a D70, it's probably not necessary to upgrade to this camera (did you know you can download a free firmware update for the D70 menu system). But if you are in the market for a cheap DSLR, you should definitely consider the Nikon D70s. Especially if you already have a collection of old Nikon lenses.
