Weakness: It's a bit of a long learning curve to take advanage of all it's techniques... VCR redording quality just "OK".
I went to store to by a VCR-DVD combo so we can watch both tapes and DVDs... The price for a Panasonic (we usually tend to buy only Panasonic products) was $130. Then, next to that machne was this Panasonic combo RECORDER for $300 after rebate (price has gi=one up a bit because of the holidays arriving...). So... the decision process was not long. I elected the DMR-E75VS.
This is a great product. I have 21 video cassettes recorded since my kids were babies... 15 years of video camera taping... For a long time I was looking for the technology to convert them to DVD, but it was way too expensive. But not any more.
ONE CLARIFICATION TO THE ABOVE REVIEWS: This machine does not record on DVD-RW discs, only on DVD-RAM discs, which many sales people claim they are "the same"... They are NOT. Panasonic claims the DVD-RAM can be reused 100,000 times, while DVD-RW much less. Either way, they cost the same (approx. $5 a disc) and can be used as we have been using regular cassettes... Burn them, watch them, erase them and burn again. JUST GREAT!

This recorder is fantastic-I've recorded over 800 hours of vcr tapes to dvds in 2 months. You can get 16 hours of recording onto 1 doublesided dvd (9.4gb)-and the quality in EP mode is still very high. some of my vcr tapes were recorded 20 years ago-and the quality on dvd is better than the tape. 1 touch dubbing is very easy-I have a library of recorded movies etc that I want to last a lifetime-and dvds will-unlike vcr tapes. progressive scan means you never have to search for the end of recording-the player tells you exactly how many minutes are left on the dvd/or vcr. excellent player and price-the only one I've seen that has the EP 16hour taping compacity.

Let me set the record straight – you can play the DVD’s you create on any DVD player. You must finalize the DVD before hand. Some people expressed how this only plays the DVD’s you make on the Panasonic. Not true! If you have any experience with CD brning you know you must finalize the CD before you can use it in another CD player – same thing goes for this DVD Recorder. The hook up to my Tivo recorder was a breeze! I can record on Tivo and Burn to DVD – I can’t tell you how cool that is! Also, cpying my old VCR tapes to DVD is so easy I just thank GOD for this thing! You can hook up your camcorder to the front inputs and record to DVD on the SPOT! The front color panel is so nice and the menus are easy to read and figure out. The options areendless too! You can adjust the brightness and colors. You can adjust the sound outputs and the recording speeds and the formats, ect, ect!!! You can even label the DVD’s and the chapters!!!! People have said the manual is confusing – read it – it’simple!! Take this review and don’t even look at the rest.

TopStrengths: Lots of great features. Very good recording on both VHS and DVD. Speed rewind in VHS is a plus.
Weakness: Slow reaction time to remote control. DVD recorder should have more options than just DVD-R and RAM.
The VHS and DVD recording quality are very good. Dubbing is very easy. The picture quality from VHS to DVD dubbing is very good. Old VHS recordings look like new again. The instruction booklet could use some work. Not very user friendly. Anyone not an electronics geek, would probably have a tough time with the setup and control of the system. The remote has slow response time. Also do not like the fact that the system will stop recording a timer program if you press the off button on the remote.

TopI'd like to know about the editing capability. I didn't see that addressed. Is there an editing capability, and if so, does editing work consistently. Can you segment a long tape filled with several episodes into chapters, one episode per chapter. I have heard reports that the DMRES30VS (another Panasonic dual recorder model) has problems with its editing capability - not consistent (shuts down) and does not do what users expect.
Strengths: Recordings to DVD are really clear. Manual and supplied DVD are very well put together and makes learning features on the recorder easy.
Weakness: Limited media-DVD R and DVD Ram.
I would recommend this product at this time. I have only had it a few weeks so my opinion is based on my experience up to now. It is very easy to learn how to use and has a well thought out manual. I thought the included DVD supplied to help you get started was a very good bonus. The unit has worked flawlessly for me. It makes very good DVD copies from VHS tapes as well as off of the television. The naming and labeling feature however is somewhat cumbersome to use. Overall I would give this unit a thumbs up and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a double VHS-DVD recorder.

Excellent DVD player meets excellent VCR. Not only this, but you will be able to transfer all your old VHS tapes to DVD. This is much more cost effective than converting them at Meijer or somewhere they convert them.

TopStrengths: The picture quality and sound is outstanding for dvd and vcr functions. Recording is easy with the one touch button.
Weakness: Most dvds are in letterbox and do not fill up the entire tv screen. If you do change it, the images are distorted. Difficult to learn all the functions and the manual could be better written.
I am not a techy at all, so please bare with me. Overall, I would definitely recommend Panasonic's DMR E75VS dvd/vcr combo player. I have played several of rented dvds in this player in the last 2 months and the picture quality and sound is outstanding! I have also taped tv programs on the vcr and picture quality is again, outstanding. I like the super fast rewind for the vcr and one touch recording. I have not tried to record dvd's just yet, but I do know I need to use Panasonic blank dvds from reading the other reviews. I do not like that dvds come in letterbox and not more of the pan and scan variety. I have a 50" big screen and when I choose the function on the player to the full screen, it distorts the images. So I have to watch the dvds in the letterbox format. If the dvd comes in the pan and scan format the picture is fantastic! I am still learning all of the functions of this quality player, but overall I would purchase it again in a heartbeat. If you want a quality, reliable dvd/vcr recording combo buy this player, you will NOT be sorry you purchased it!

Topi've recorded tv programs onto blank dvds, does not need to be panasonic blank dvds, and the recorded programs are not in "letter box". i recorded it in EP mode so the quality is OK. want cheap blank dvds, go to www.supermediastore.com
Strengths: Ability to dub right from VHS to DVD or DVD to VHS. 1 & 2 Hour speeds are very good. Plays clips on menu thumbnails.
Weakness: Only records on DVD-R or DVD-RAM. 6-8 Hour speeds are not that great when recorded on DVD. 4 Hour speed is ok. Cant split recordings once recorded on DVD-R. No ability to put backgrounds on menus.
Overall, this DVD recorder is pretty good. With the combo VHS player, it eliminates all of the extra connections that compromise quality. Dubbing is pretty good so far, but only up to 2 hour speed. I have had it for a short time and I am satisfied. Only paid $260 for it brand new, now I need to send in the $50 rebate to make it less. I have only used Memorex media, so I am still trying to find the best media for the best quality.

Panasonic DMR-E75VS DVD/VCR Combo
Strengths: Its strengths are extremely clear picture. Almost no degradation when copying VHS
Weakness: Needs the capability to playback +RW. Needs better editing capability in -R video mode. Manual is more difficult than most. Requires modulator to hook to older TVs.
Overall, this is an excellent recorder if you want to back up your VHS tapes. It probably has the clearest picture I've seen, with the abilty to control sharpness and brightness playback. The dubbing functions are user friendly. Connecting to an older TV can be complictated, especially if you are hooked to a cable box. You will need to purchase a modulator if you don't have the video and sound jacks on your TV. Don't buy this if you plan to do a lot of editing in the -R mode. You can do this only with the less compatible, -Ram.

What is meant by "modulator". I wish to use with an older TV. The specs say Input: Analog Coax(RF) and Output: RF Coaxial?
