Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: This region free DVD player/after little change in setting/ is simply the best so far. It plays MPEG-4,2,1/DivX/XviD/XSVCD/SVCD/VCD,DVD+R,RW,DVD-R,RW,MP3,JPGs,AVI

Weakness: Remote control could have a better layout. But it is OK. Only 8x FWD

I think this is good product for $70. You got to remember that for 70$ you are not going to get mercedes. There are better products on the market but much more expensive and not so flexible. For all that I think this is great value. Design is ok but the main reason I bought this one is that I can play anything I want to. Till today it has played every disk I put in. Philips is saying they do not support DVD-R and DVD-RW but I think they do something they do not know about. Yes, it plays DVD-R and DVD-RW. You do not have to think about what kind of media you go to buy. It plays Divx and Xvid movies too. For me a nice feature of this player is that it converts PAL to NTSC and back and you can watch DVD in PAL or NTSC without any problem. And now, the most important thing. You can change setting of this player and make it region free./check web for more info/ That means it will play any disks from anywhere.Isn`t that great?
This unit is made for those electronics fans who want the most for the buck they spend!
I would definitely recommend everyone to get it.
I'm happy enough with this player and money I spent for it.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Supports all formats, Dual format

Weakness: dont support 220Volt

I tried everything i had handy at it- vcds work, svcd is supported, .mpg's work fine, divx's (AND XVID, YES.) work great. I tried a cd with both avi's and .mpg's.. absolutely pristine. i think this thing even supports .wmv's, i saw a windows icon next to a file on an old cd ,

Over all the quality is good

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Fine picture quality, plays "almost" any format, firmware upgradable, region-code breakable. Can't expect more from a $70 player.

Weakness: wmv format is not supported, slow picture search (up to 8x), not-so-easy remote controller.

It seems to play most formats as advertised; I tested dvd+r, mp3 cd, and divx. It would be perfect for me if it could also play wmv, but it wouldn't matter if you could spare some time in conversion.
Remote control buttons are not so easy, but not a big deal. Another problem I noticed is that the player did not respond very well to the remote unless I aimed it in a very straight direction.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Can play almost anything.... even my already broken, scratched DVDs, VCDs. And not expensive.

Weakness: Very lousy warranty service

I broke my previous DVD player (well, I didn't break it, but my 2-year-old son did, together with many VCDs and DVDs) and need to buy a new one. After shopping around, finally chose this as I heard quite a lot good feedback. I like the look of it, very simple and no fancy thing. And what surprised me pleasantly is that it can play almost anything I put inside, even the DVD's and VCD's that had been badly scratched by my son... the condition of those discs can't be worse and they are certified (by me) to be unplayable (on my laptop DVD drive and another DVD player). There are very little amount of skipping, but,... what can I ask for? I am already very happy. I have used it for over a month and it's going well.
But one thing I don't quite like is the warranty service. It's said that it has a 1 year warranty with it... but full warranty (exchange of a new one in case this one breaks) is for the first 90 days and the remaining of the year, just partial warranty (that is, we need to pay a portion, $28? out of pocket for replacement) and we need to pay for shipping!!! That's a very bad warranty service... but well, I bought it for like 53 bucks,... I can well throw it away if it breaks...

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays everything. Will play/repeat 6-7 movies in DIVX format on 1 DVD.

Weakness: Pixalation/Pausing during data stream error on DIVX files.

I have 150 DIVX movies that I can only watch on the computer. I simply copied the DIVX files to DVD's (5-7 per disk) then I can watch them on my HDTV at near DVD quality. If you use smaller movie files, you can put them into different folders, then repeat one file (movie), all files, or the files in a specific folder. This makes creating custom movie archive files simple. You create a folder for one date, or subject, put all the AVI files in it, then select to play the entire folder, or repeat the entire folder. A poor mans DVD changer, using a single disk, great picture quality (except for pixelation problems during data stream errors), great looks and audio. An amazing bargain.
Highly recommended.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Upgradable firmware, subtitle, eat almost all kinds of disk. Support divx.

Weakness: Doesn't support long file names.

This is a great divx DVD player. It can play almost all my divx/xvid movies. After upgraded the firmware, it can display subtitles now. You can find a way to get it region-free on the internet, too. Highly recommend to who wants a cheap divx DVD player.

Hi, how do you upgrade firmware on a standalone machine? Can it play AVI files? I got a philip combo that plays VHS and DVDs. It is only a few months old. But it freezes occasionally even with brand new original DVD movies. So I am looking for a new machine. You answer may be very helpful to me. Thanks.

Firmware on DVD players is upgraded by loading a specially formatted disk, which the player recognizes as a firmware disk. After about 30 seconds of loading, your DVD player will reset, and have the new firmware loaded. You should probably go to Philips' site to see what firmware updates are available.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays almost everything: DVD, CD, JPEG, MPEG4, DivX, MP3, VCD, SVCD, DVD+-R, CD-R/RW

Weakness: Remote is not that good. Does not play *.wmv.

I purchased this DVD player from Target and I love it. For the price less than $70 it performs very well. It has some issues with playing DivX with HI bitrate or VBR MP3 sound, but overall I am extremely happy with it so far. I have read that this dvd player can play any regional dvd from anywhere in the world(after a simple adjustment) and doesn't have macrovision meaning you can record onto vhs tapes. I totally recommend this.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Format support (DVDR, CDR, DIVX, MPEGs, JPEGs), Price, looks, size.

Weakness: No DTS support, but most dvds don't have DTS anyway.

This player is great. For $70 you get a quality DVD player that supports Divx and Mpegs, has optical out, and operates with ease. This unit operates flawless. From VCDs to SVCDs to Jpegs to Mpegs to tons of DVD+Rs, I have had absolutly no problems. Not even a temporary glitch. Starts up Disc very quickly. It performs so smooth, like a machete through butter. My only neg comment would be that I wish they had the foward/rewind and next/previous buttons switched on the remote. But I am getting used to it, nothing to stress. The only flaw is no DTS support.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: It can play Divx movie. The price is very affordable.

Weakness: No DTS decoding, just pass through the signal to amplifier. If you have an amplifier which can decode the DTS signal, you don't have this problem. Sometimes, Video and Audio is not syncronized.

It is very nice little DVD player which can play DIVX movie also. I think that it is hard to find this kind of dvd player in $70 range. I hope that Philips upgrade the firmware more often.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Divx Support 3x, 4x and 5x Upgradable Firmware-divx external subtitle support Region Free, search online Progressive Scan Sleek looking some online retailers selling it forless than $70

Weakness: Remote control - clumsy no DTS decoding. MENU is weak doesn't support long file names

This player has played everything i have thrown at it, including DIVX, XVID, DVDS, VCDS, SVCDS - I haven't tested it with the bit rate etc. It doesn't decode DTS. You can download a firmware from the manufacturers website which will add new features including the support for external subtitles. I haven't tried DVD-RW or DVD-R so can't comment on that. But I researched this unit before I purchased it - heard that it does play DVD-RW and DVDRs.
This DVD players has a region free hack, just search for it. This player is highly recommended. I'm writing this in a hurry...sorry about the organization.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: plays practically anything, good value, upgradeable firmware

Weakness: clumsy remote

I had read about this player at various websites, and anticipated great things from it, and have not been disappointed yet. Plays many encoding formats divx(mpeg4),mpeg1, mpeg2, mp3, vcd, svcd, dvd. And so forth, the player also is able to play most disc formats, the formats I have not tried is dvd +/- rw and dvdram, but from what I know, it is able to play former.

Be for warned that it cannot play every divx format properly. The DVP642 is not able to process certain audio codecs that may be used for a divx file. This results in video without audio. Fortunately most divx is encoded using an mp3 format that the DVP642 can process.

I will and have recommended the DVP642 to people. Its wonderful for people with dvd/cd burners. Its especially beneficial for people that download video from the internet that is usually encoded mpg 1, 2, 4 which can be burned and viewed directly with CD-Rs without further re-encoding.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays just about anything. VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs, DivX, Xvid, MP3, and etc.

Weakness: No time seek feature.

Great afford player that plays just about anything. Looks like it got some quality to back it up too.

The only feature Philips forgot to add and I don't know why it's missing is the time search feature. Without this feature, you can't go back to the movie where you left off. Instead, you'll have to FF at 4X to continue. This is very annoying. However, on SOME SVCDs and VCDs, you can select chapters, but you cannot say go directly to 38:15 into the movie.

Other than this missing feature, this player would have gotten a perfect 10!

Actually, you can go to 38:15. Just press the Display button and enter 00:38:15. Also, sometimes I run into a file that looks sort of like a "mosaic" when I play it. The colors will be all messed up and the image is pixelated. I find that this can be easily fixed by pressing the System Menu button and select Exit Setup. Then, the file plays fine. You just have to do this each time you play a file like this. Overall, a wonderful player and a great deal!!

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Sleek look Its plays mp3/vcds/divx Its Recognizes DVDs/CDRs Also like the zoom function Customizable pic o/p

Weakness: I wish they put a little more thought on the remote button placement

Bought this three weeks ago and am really satisfied with this purchase. It plays practically everything out there. If not am sure an easily updatable firmware in the future can fix this
I like all the features available on the remote but their placement takes a lot of getting used to.
You can repeat a particular section of movie over and over useful for little kids
The customizable picture output is great for all the old movies.
All in all a good buy for $70.00

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays all formats including Divx great. Reads menus and allows you to choose files from directories. Easy to read LCD display. Well worth the price.

Weakness: Remote responsiveness is a little sluggish. Haven't found other weaknesses yet.

Overall very pleased with performance of this unit. I would highly recommend it for people needing to play Divx. However, if that is not a feature you need, you might want to consider other units.

Value DVD Player that plays it all

Strengths: - Supports most formats - Sleek design - Inexpensive

Weakness: - Bad Customer Support - Noisy when playing - Dosn't support latest codecs or Real Player files - Cheap Components used

I had this player for 6 months, and it broke, when plugged in a red blinking light would come on and blink. I exchanged it at walmart and got a new one which is now running again.. hopefully for longer than 6 months. I have to say its been through alot in those 6 months but there is no excuse for it to break like that, the quaity is just not there.

If the quality was there I would give it a 4/5, but since this happened to me I am afraid it might again. Also the support is horrible, if you go through philips for the warranty be prepared to pay $30 for replacement after 3 months.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays MOST divx3-5 movies, vcd, mpeg1, 2 and 3 and jpeg

Weakness: FF feature and all models manufactured after 1/04 does not support DVDR/RW- discs, PHILIPS do not and will not support -R discs with any future patches.

Overall this dvd player will do the job for playing your divx movies, but to replace your stand alone which may support + and - dvdr discs, I suggest you hold on to it. Forget SAMSUNG, SONY and others I have had no complaints with my APEX AD2600 which supports jpeg, mpeg1 and 2 vcd and svcd discs and it costs much less also $49.99.
I returned mine after I was told from PHILIPS that my DVD-R discs will not play in their new players and no future support will be available. My advice... purchase the RJ ELECTRONICS 1500 for $158 online. Get a DVD player that can play both + and - discs should things go to - discs you can still use your player rather than going out to find a back up for this PHILIPS player that cost $70.

Weakness: Only weakness (my opinion), I would like to see it in black.

Not So Good

Strengths: Looks Nice

Weakness: WILL NOT play DVD-R or DVD-RW disks without skipping.

I was having a skipping problem when playing DVD-R disks so I called Philips tech support and they told me to return it because DVD-R is not supported by the player. I can play these same DVD's in my Daughters 2 year old $45.00 apex player. I would buy one of those but it lacks an optical output.

Strengths: Sleek design and compact

Weakness: Some buttons on the remote are not labeled

One of the best dvd players available on the market. It supports mpeg and divx. All I had to do was burn my divx video on a cd/dvd disk, pop the disk into my new philips dvp642, and enjoy the movies. Also supports mp3 for music and picture cd. It's like having a universal player !!

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Progressive Scan, plays DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W, DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x, CD, CDR, MP3, optical and coaxial digital-audio terminals pass Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals.

Weakness: Does not upscale to 720p, 1080i.

This is a LOT of bang for the buck. I already have an upscaling DVD player (Momitsu V880) which produces a picture of near HDTV quality from DVD movies, but this should do very nicely for my TV.

Great price and value

Strengths: When matched with a nice receiver, nice picture and sound. Price is great and plays everything.

Weakness: Do not like the remote, small buttons, and takes time to get use too. Had a little trouble hooking it up to my receiver, had to change the digital input setting.

I have had it for a month now and feel it is a great basic dvd player. I paid $49.00 dollars for it at Circuit City with a $10.00 mail in rebate=$39.00. I decided to buy it when my JVC dvd player started acting up after 2 years (was a nice player),I believe if you hook it up with a nice receiver, you will find it to be just as good as higher priced models. The audio (seems to play DTS for me)is great and the picture is equally nice. I have noticed a sound from the player when reading the disk, but I can only hear it when I standing over it. My only fear is reviews from some that say their player died after 6 months, still for $39.00 it can't be beat.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays everything.

Weakness: Poor durability.

This is the second Philips DVP642 player that I have purchased. The first one lasted about a year, and then every DVD I put in it only played in black and white. This one is starting to have problems after one month. Some DVDs I play freeze up and now don't play anymore for some reason (although they used to play fine), but they play with no problems on my computer. It could be that my son has been handling the DVDs though and isn't careful how he grabs them.

Basically this is a great throw away DVD player. If you want a cheap DVD player that will play anything you through in it (PAL or NTSC, DVD+Rs, DivX, mp3s, you name it) then I highly recommend this player. If you are only going to play rented or store bought DVDs, then I suggest you purchase a better player with higher reliability. But if you are going to play movies you download off the Internet, then I would highly recommend this player, despite it's poor long term performance, because it really is the best DVD player that I'm aware of at playing the widest range of possible formats. No other DVD player is going to play PAL region and DivX movies.

Don't buy

Strengths: Would play almost anything.

Weakness: Had 13 months -- and died. Does not have restart feature like my Sony (also dead) did.

Worked great while it lasted. Played almost anything I tried in it. However, it only lasted 13 months before it stopped playing anything (started "rebooting" after only a couple minutes). Not going to buy another Philips DVD player again.

Strengths: Have everything that i need (Progressive Scan, Optical Out, Component out). Plays practically everything.

Weakness: Remote is flimsy and hard to navigate

I would rather spend my money on this versus the HD upgrade conversion garbage. I have tested them and there is not that much dramatic difference. I would rather save my money for the new HD DVD players that will be released soon rather it be blu-ray or hd-dvd.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: plays allmost anything

Weakness: customer support

My HD television went in for repair yesterday and I had to use an older one while it is gone. when I hooked the dvd player up I realized the progressive scan was on and it wouldnt work that way on my older tv, Since I couldnt see the system screen I couldnt turn the progressive scan off so I called phillips to ask them how ie... walk me thru the right buttons to hit on the remote. They tried to charge me 15 dollars for this information, I thought the top of my head would blow off I was so mad.I managed to fix it with the help of a friend with the same player. This is a great little dvdplayer but the customer support behind it is the worst I have ever encountered in my life. If you plan to use this thing past the 90 day warranty be prepared to pay up if you ever have a problem.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays a variety of formats.

Weakness: NO LONG NAME SUPPORT. Only displays 7 or 8 digits. Book says 32 char. on mp3 files-NOPE. No universal remote codes published. Emailed their support, they say call them! Why bother emailing??

Disappointed with the response from their support about the above issus. If I had wanted to call them I would have. I spent the time to go to their site and type an email and they respond with "call us." How stupid.

As several have said, the remote needs more function. I can't find a slow or frame by frame function. I did find Open and Close Tray is done by holding the Stop button for about 5 seconds.

If it supported long filenames, I would give it a 5 star rating though. It's a very good player and plays most any movie filetype (except .mov) I've put in it, .avi, mpg, divx. That's great, there are VERY few (only one other currently on the market I think and it's almost double the price) that do.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Looks nice. Plays everything you have. Good price.

Weakness: Lack of buttons on unit. Ugly remote.

We bought this unit because it matched the rest of our electronics and we found a way to get it for about $40 (on sale at Meijer for $67, less $13 in store coupon, less $10 mastercard coupon, less 10% employee discount [had a friend who works there pick it up for us]).
So we didn't pay much. Here are the breaks:
It plays stuff well. We have a ton of MP3's and a ton of music videos in MPG format. With this you just burn a disk full of them and toss it in and play it. No making VCD's or any of that stuff.
It plays scratched discs pretty well. Has a nice picture (with componet hook ups on a 65" TV). It also has a number of settings to toggle including a nice feature where you can make the player region free (neat!).

Now for the bad. When you are playing said MP3/MPG discs it can take the player as much as 30 seconds to generate the menu for the songs. Plus you can't look for the next song while the first one is playing.
The remote is really ugly. It is a generic number that just has no style. Like a small brick with buttons. You'll notice when you see it why they never show pics of the remote in ads or on the box.
There is no buttons on the DVD player itself to skip chapters, FF or RW, nothing. Just open, play, and stop if I remember correctly.

So that is about it. It isn't a bad player and I can't say it is a bad buy. Just understand that it does what it says it will do and is pretty average in every other respect.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays almost every type of video

Weakness: Menus are too simple, no eject button, fast forward isn't too fast

This is my first DVD player and I am very happy with it. The quality of the picture is excellent and it is very easy to use. The best part of this DVD player is its ability to play almost any time of movie. I was able to play DVD, DivX, and Xvid movies all on this DVD player. I did encounter a few downloaded movies that didn't play, but most of them did. My biggest gripe is the fast forward. This player can only do 8x, which means that it will take forever to fast forward to your favorite part in the middle of the movie!! Other than a few weaknesses, this is an excellent player.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: the ability to play DIVX movies.

Weakness: there are no other controls on the deck besides the PLAY, STOP, EJECT, and POWER button. No support for long filenames. Remote is very unintuitive.

Finally, a DVD player with the ability to play DIVX and MPEG movies, as well as VCDs. So far I haven't encountered any disc i've thrown at it that it couldn't play (including DVD-Rs). Highly recommended and it's very affordable too.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: slim design, region free

Weakness: can't open the tray remotely

The player can play DivX and MP3. And it also comes with progressive scan feature. The best of all is that you can make it region free but push several buttons! I'm really like it. It is slim and does not take too much space.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Plays almost any format

Weakness: remote could be better

As soon as I hooked it up I tried vcd, dvd, svcd, dvd, and a dvd with 24 Divx animes on it. ALL played perfectly.
If you have more than one DivX file on a dvd disk it makes a menu and a selection list. This player is the best I've seen. It is a steal at $69.99.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Easy to operate

Weakness: Lack HD

This DVD player is a space saver. Light and can be stack up on other devices. Elegantly designed. LCD is crystal clear. The only drawback is that the remote does not have an open/eject button.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Great Price, plays files from DVD, Plays almost everything you can throw at it XVID/DIVX/DVD DL. Not to forget Progressive Scan!

Weakness: NO SACD

I went through every DIVX and XVID file I have, it played all of them.. It even plays files from DVD, many other players do not do this. Even plays DVD DL discs and my Lite on (I paid double for) will not do this.

If you are looking for a great player at a good price, you can not beat this drive. I give it a 9 out of 10 as it doesn't play SACD (Not that many people care about this).

dvp642 DVD player

Strengths: so far so good.

Weakness: It took to long to arrive, Because the first shipment was not the right one.

The DVD player is good and no trouble at all.
the only problem was that it took almost a full month to
arrive. Because the first shipment was mp3 player which
was not the one I ordered.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: Multi format. Can be hacked to become region free. Good price.

Weakness: None so far although the remote control layout can be better.

I have a Sony DVD that is about $20 more than this Philips. However, the picture quality appears comparable. The only advantage Sony has over Philips is its remote control. Sony's remote control can be used with the TV. Philip's on the other hand is just purely a remote control for the DVD player.

Despite that small shortcoming, my main reason for getting the Philips is because it can be hacked to become region free. Certainly, there are other DVD players that can be hacked but probably none that are brand name machines. That is important because my previous bad experience with CyberHome has convinced me it is worth the extra money to stay with the major brands.

Philips DVP642 DVD Player

Strengths: This dvd player plays many diffrent files. It is very cheap, only cost me 75 dollars. Looks very nice also. For all you fans that watch a lot of DivX and MPEG movies this is the perfect thing.

Weakness: The controler isnt that great.

I also tested DVR+, DVD-, CDR and all of them were supported. This is a great dvd player plus more. YOU SHOULD GO OUT AND PICK ONE UP YOURSELF.

Component only output that works

Strengths: Cheap

Weakness: Customer Service, S-Video output

I bought this DVD player 8 months ago because I needed a cheap player to replace an older one. I had been using it with the component output on my Flat screen and it worked fine. Sometimes had issues with burned DVDs, but always played commercial DVDs no problem.

I then bought another philips hdmi 1080i upconvert DVD player for the flat screen and moved the dvp642 to a conventional TV. This TV does not have component inputs so I was using the s-video. Could not get the picture to appear for more than 1/2 a second. Could hear sound just fine. Called philips support and they told me they would exchange it for me for $18 plus shipping. I only paid $35 for it brand new.

If you buy this player, make sure EVERYTHING works on it before the warranty runs out. (3 months parts/labor)
