OPPO Digital's DV-970HD was developed following the success of the OPDV971H, the award-winning upconverting DVD player which scored the highest against hundreds of brands and models in independent DVD player benchmark tests. With experience garnered from the OPDV971H and insightful input from the A/V enthusiast community, OPPO packs the DV-970HD with high performance and enthusiast grade features, all at an incredible value. Today's traditional DVDs and DVD players are intended for low resolution, standard definition televisions. The DV-970HD, designed for every HDTV owner, up-converts standard DVD to high-definition signal, producing clearer, smoother, and crisper video on HDTV and projectors. Its HDMI output ensures a pure, straight digital path for video and audio. In addition to its up-conversion feature, the DV-970HD can output a native 480i/576i resolution over HDMI, making it an incredible digital transport for use with high-end video processors or scalers. Featuring a stylish, slim, and modern design, the DV-970HD includes an integrated 4-in-1 flash memory card reader to allow viewers to enjoy their digital pictures and music. It also offers a USB interface for expanded connectivity. The DV-970HD is one of the most versatile players on the market, providing support for DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), DVD+/-RW and CD-R/RW. It is also compatible with DivX(R) video, XviD, Audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, WMA and other digital audio and video media formats. The DV-970HD supports NTSC or PAL disc and television systems. As video is only part of the equation, the DV-970HD also features excellent audio with Dolby Digital surround sound and Pro Logic II decoding. A high-quality certified HDMI cable with gold-plated connectors is included, adding even more value to the already feature-packed product. The OPPO DV-970HD provides most of the performance of the highest-rated OPDV971H, but at a lower price and includes even more features. minimize

3 Star Review Outstanding Product

Strengths:

Video Quality, Audio quality, ease of use, HDMI cable included, price, universal player, upgradeable firmware, packaging, construction.

Weaknesses:

Appearance, slow load times, USB 1.1, does not read XD cards, USB devices must be formatted with FAT, not NTFS, jagged edges around objects when pausing or slow motion (read below).

Posted Feb 28, 2007 - This is an amazing unit for the price. I can't say enough good things about what it can do. The DV-970HD will play virtually anything you throw at it, (as long as it is on a 5.25 inch optical disk) and does it pretty well. I have this unit hooked up using HDMI to a 52-inch LCOS projection TV. The construction of the unit is not as "cheap" as other reviews might have you believe. In fact, the chassis feels taught and very solid when you hold it in your hands and the unit is not as lightweight as most inexpensive universal players. Get all the preconceived notions about old APEX players out of your mind...this is much nicer. The clear disc tray also opens and closes quickly and without the "cheap" sound you might expect, but does feel flimsy. I was especially amazed at the unique, high quality packaging that Oppo uses; the packaging is a little smaller and less bulky than most other manufacturers, and it looks great. The inside of the box includes a soft black cloth with the Oppo name printed on it which wraps the unit in lieu of the traditional Styrofoam wrap. They even include two instruction manuals, one for basic use and the other for advanced users! They really spared no expense on the packaging and instructions! I was not too crazy about the remote at first but have learned to deal with it- it is well laid out and easy to use and definitely not as bad as other companies' remotes such as JVC. The on screen menu is simple and easy to use but is not as "pretty" as other more expensive players. After using this product for a month now, I have seen it has some shortcommings such as USB 1.1, NOT 2.0 (very big issue), devices connected using the USB/card slots on the front must be formatted with the older FAT file system, not NTFS or other (even bigger issue- count out my iPod and flash drives!) and you cannot copy from disk to card or USB device (would be nice to have) It also will not read the XD-style picture cards and there is no adapter to do this (big issue as well, a lot of digital cameras, esp Fuji use these!) I also noticed that pausing and slow motion leave the picture with jagged edges around objects, my previous Marantz DV-7010 player did not. Oppo states this is an inherent characteristic of the Mediatek decoder chip they use and they have not ben able to fix this with firmware upgrades. I also noticed that when you scene select or episode select on a series disk that there is a 5 second audio delay. Oppo also states that this is an inherent design flaw that cannot be rectified. These are all major issues IMHO that a buyer should be aware of before purchasing this player. On a slightly less important level this player also takes a very long time to load discs and doesn't have too much sex appeal. All in all I would recommend this unit for anyone on a budget due to the price and capability to play most formats on a 5.25" optical disk. It certainly has it's limitations, but that comes with the price. When i bought my previous player (Marantz) 6 years ago, I paid almost $700.00 for it, and it can't play half the stuff this device can, but there's another side to that coin- you do get what you pay for in picture quality, load times, build quality, ease of operation and looks. That old player was easily 10 times faster loading disks and skipping tracks than this and the picture was smooth and nothing short of amazing. The picture here is good, but could be much better. The bottom line is that there will always be tradeoffs that you must consider before buying a product.

5 Star Review OPPO Digital DV-970HD DVD Player HDMI

Strengths:

HDMI out is premo. Upconversion is spectacular. Price is right!

Weaknesses:

Construction is a little chinsy. I hate silver HT equipment (MAKE IT BLACK!)

Posted Feb 1, 2007 - As far as performance goes, there isn't a better unit out there. This plays every relivant format out there. The price was right, and the fact it upconverts SD DVD's to 1080i is bonus. I was very weary of purchasing due to lack of familiarity of the brand, but I am blown away by the performance of this player. Highly recommend.

5 Star Review DV-970HD DVD Player

Strengths:

Picture Quality

Weaknesses:

Price, Availability

Posted Jan 23, 2007 - I was looking for a new DVD player because my old Sony player does not handle all DVD+R DL disks properly. I originally was looking for the cheapest player available, but after reading on-line expert reviews, I realized that this was the best player for the money. It has HDMI and comes with the cable included. The picture quality is excellent and it plays my disks without problems. I'm not sure that I could tell the difference between this player and one at half this price without having them set up side by side and looking very closely. However, the experts can. Overall this is a great product and I have no regrets.

5 Star Review OPPO DV-970HD DVD Player

Strengths:

HDMI connection, media card & USB reader, DivX support, great video quality upconversion

Weaknesses:

Flimsy CD tray, cheap looking

Posted Apr 21, 2007 - I bought this up-conversion DVD player to compliment my new plasma TV. This DVD supports many video and audio formats such as DivX, XviD and DVD-Audio. I've played DivX files on this DVD player and they've all worked flawlessly. I tried playing DivX files through a USB flash drive, but they usually stutter, making them unwatchable. The HDMI port means that I can route audio and video to my TV with just one cable. I didn't have any HDMI cables, but this DVD player came with one. For $150, this DVD player presents great value considering the amount of features it has.

5 Star Review Oppo DV-970HD Excellent Buy / Glad I Did!

Strengths:

Plays everything possible I put in it. Firmware can be upgraded/downgraded with ease. 1080i over Componet connection.

Weaknesses:

Disk tray appears to be fragile.

Posted Apr 21, 2007 - I love this player. It replaced a Toshiba SD-K860 that had issues with freezing, reading different disk media and not recognizing DIVX movie & sound files. I played the same disks in the Oppo 970HD just perfectly. I also picked the Oppo over a soon to be released Phillips because the Oppo can do 1080i through Componet connection as my Toshiba HD TV does not have a HDMI connection and most currently available DVD players can only upscale via HDMI and not via Componet. Purchased 970HD from Amazon, in stock got it in about 5 days no sales Tax & Free Shipping. Couldn't be happier!

4 Star Review A Good Up Conversion Until True HD Players Price Come Down

Strengths:

The picture from the up conversion and the HDMI cable included in the price.

Weaknesses:

The remote control and being controlled remotely.

Posted Apr 4, 2007 - I wanted a better DVD player than an old Toshiba to hook up to a 1080 HDTV without footing the bill of a Blue Ray. The OPPO Digital DV-970 did the trick at an good price. A great price when the supplied HDMI cable is factored in the mix. The up conversion really is noticeable. The digital media card reader slot is a plus, but it loads very slowly. The load time for a DVD is acceptable. My only big disappointment is that the unit can not be controlled by the HDTV’s universal remote. How hard is it to share frequency codes? All in all, for the price it is a good stop gap unit until the cost of true HD players drop.

5 Star Review A well-made unit with lots of features

Strengths:

HDMI cable included, setup menu easy to navigate. Optical digital output.

Weaknesses:

Remote control not backlit. USB 1.1

Posted Mar 20, 2007 - Bought this unit as an upgrade from a Sony progressive scan unit after I began to wonder if there would be an improvement over 480p+component video. The only available input jack on my TV was the component video jack previously occupied by the Sony so I used the firmware mod to allow upconversion over component cable. There IS a discernable improvement in picture quality with upconversion with this unit, especially on well-mastered DVDs like The Dreamers and Underworld. I could not see a difference between 720p and 1080i, however. I may try the HDMI route to see if there is an improvement over component cable.

5 Star Review Oppo DV-970HD DVD Player

Strengths:

Plays almost any format - avi, xvid, etc. Upconverted picture is great via HDMI

Weaknesses:

Tray seems a little cheap. Doesn't handle 1080p (get a HD-DVD for this anyway)

Posted Mar 17, 2007 - I bought this DVD player so I would have a DVD player that could play movies in an avi format as well as upconvert regular DVD movies. I bought the item on amazon.com for $149 and have been extremely impressed with the item for that price. It plays everything, looks great and has no issue. Firmware can also be updated via the web. If you're looking for a budget DVD player that measures up to the more expensive models, this is it.
