Strengths:Plays tons of video and audio formats, including divx and divx ultra, will read just about any disc thrown at it, has USB port to read files, cheap, nice black styling, HDMI, etc.
Weaknesses:No S-Video, no optical audio port, cheap remote, slow start up time, only remembers last position of five last movies played, divx subtitles have strange background
Posted Jul 1, 2007 - This is easily the best budget DVD player available, period. It's available at some retailers as low as $60. It plays all my divx files, divx ultra, MP3, and more from just about any type of disc (CD-R, DVD+R, etc.). Additionally, there is a USB port on the front (despite hype, it only transfers at USB 1.1 rates, not 2.0) that will read flash drives and some hard drives. It's a great option to view digital photos, listen to music or watch divx movies without having to burn a disc. Thankfully, Philips ditched the silver color scheme and went for black. This is also one of the few budget plays that has an HDMI port, and will upscale as high as 1080p. You can customize the minimal LCD display, and the firmware is upgradable. Using an easy to find trick, you can also make t his DVD player region free. PAL to NTSC conversion is excellent as well.
There are some drawbacks though. There is no S-Video output, so you either have to go with composite, component, or HDMI. There is a coaxial digital out for audio, but no optical which is a little annoying. The bundled remote has buttons that stick a bit when pushed, and doesn't have enough buttons for all this DVD player can do. Start up time is about fifteen seconds which seems a bit long. Also, it only remembers your last play point for the last five movies you've watched. Divx subtitles also have a slightly transparent background around them, for ease of reading I suppose, but I find it annoying. The DVD tray might also be a bit flimsy for some people, but I like it since it keeps the unit ultra slim.
This is easily the best sub-$100 DVD player available. It will play some movies that won't play properly on other DVDs, and it will play any homemade things you throw at it. If you only buy one DVD player before you go HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, this is the way to go.
