Very basic unit
Can read any type of media
Only writes to DVD-RW/R. Output not compatible with most other players
Posted Jul 20, 2006 - This is a very basic unit. It can replace a basic VCR but don't expect anything fancy. First, it will only write to DVD-R media. These are supposedly the most compatible media but I found the output to have compatibility problems. My other DVD player by SONY has trouble reading these recordings. Sometimes it reads portions of a disk other times not. Get weird error messages as well. Trying to play the disks on my desktop computer is a challenge as well. The recordings always stutter a bit before they start playing. My computer has lots of extra processing and video power so it is not a problem with my hardware. Although I do not have a lot of experience with recorders like this, I find the finalizing part at the end extremely slow. A Panasonic recorder I have used finalized the disks in less than a minute whereas this machine takes up to 5 minutes to do it. Output quality is good. Better than a VCR but not nearly as good as the DVR. All in all, it would be a good unit if the disks it produced were playable elsewhere. Because of the compatibility problem, I eventually replaced it with a Sony unit which has better quality output and whose disks are compatible.
