Incredibly versatile and format friendly, this DVD recorder can record to and play back just about any DVD you can throw at it. Specifically, it can record to and play back DVD-R/-RW/-RAM/+R/+RW discs. It can also play back many more disc formats, including: DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R(dual layer), DVD+R(dual layer), CD, CD-DA, and CD-R/RW(including MP3, JPEG, and DivX files). With a Panasonic DVD recorder, never think twice about what disc you need. This DVD recorder can record an amazing 500 lines of horizontal resolution in LP Mode, which is twice the 250 lines of resolution offered by conventional LP Mode recording. What does this mean? It means that you can now record longer (4 hours on a single-sided DVD-R or -RAM disc as opposed to 2 hours) and still enjoy the crisp, vibrant images with exceptional detail that 500 lines of horizontal resolution deliver. minimize

Strengths: Able to record on just about any type of media

Weaknesses: Picture quality not as crisp as I hoped for.

My unit is connected to the cable box with RCA plugs instead of Coax. This should provide a better picture but it does not. In XP or SP mode, the recordings are very good but EP (6 hrs/disk) they are pretty poor.

It takes some getting used to if you have been using a VCR. In order to use a new disk, you must format it first in the machine and before you can read the disk on another machine, you must finalize the disk. Both operations take a few minutes to do. The overall quality though is somewhat better than a VCR recording. I was hoping they would be as good as my DVR recordings but they are not.

Because my cable box has no coax output, I have to use this unit as a passthrough to my TV. It means I must turn on the unit even if all I want to do is watch TV. Its not a big deal but the unit automatically plays any disk that is in the machine when you turn it on. So, if you want to watch tv and there is a disk in it, you have to stop the machine manually first. Again, not a big deal but annoying.

I know it sounds like I am bashing the machine but I'm not. There are some quirks as I stated that require a couple of extra steps but it is just a matter of getting used to it.

How does it compare other units? Don't know, this is my first venture into DVD records.

Not sure where you got your information, but I've never heard that RCA should be better than coax. Just the opposite, in fact -- coax should be much better than RCA. My DVR documentation recommends coax as one of the best quality connections and recommends against using RCA (and experience shows it to be true). Just a guess, but my guess is your cables are the reason for the lack of quality.
