4 Star Review Great price; seems solid

Strengths:

Compact design; cooling fan

Weaknesses:

Somewhat hard to assemble; instructions contain many typos; short (18") USB cable

Posted Apr 30, 2006 - As others have said, the instructions tell you to attach the two metal plates, then the next illustration shows the drive without the plates. I put the plates on first, then could not fit the drive into the case. I took the plates off, got everything together and it's snug - no shifting inside, even without the plates. I don't know why they tell you to disconnect the interior power cable; I couldn't get it loose so I installed the disk with it still connected and had no trouble doing so. I also don't know why they say to remove both end caps when both connections are made from the front end. And yes, those two blue LEDs are VERY bright! Over all, though, it seems like a solid unit. Rather than buy external drives in the future, I'll buy internal drives and more of these cases.

4 Star Review a good case but hot

Strengths:

noiseless, and just works fine

Weaknesses:

hot, it feels very hot when touching it.

Posted Jun 26, 2006 - I bought it for $20 after rebate 3 months ago. It just works fine. It doesn't look very good, but it does the job. I used it to accomodate my 300 GB maxtor drive, so far no problem ever.

5 Star Review Very nice case

Strengths:

Slim and vertical standing, built in fan, front power button, low noise, case doesn't get hot, fast transfer rate

Weaknesses:

Installation somewhat difficult, LEDs on the front are very bright and annoying

Posted Apr 4, 2006 - Since the case is small, installing the hard drive takes some times. The LEDs in the front are very bright but you can just tape something over them to dim them down. The case doesn't take up very much space and is sturdy--good for traveling.

4 Star Review Zdisc 3.5in Aluminum External Storage Hard Drive Enclosure.

Strengths:

small but functional.

Weaknesses:

Don't find right now.

Posted Mar 30, 2006 - Zdisc 3.5in Aluminum External Storage Hard Drive Enclosure. This is a small but functional stuff. Little noise when running. Quick delivery. Anyway, the price is also reasonable (with $5 additional bonus). I like it.

4 Star Review Cintre CI-330U2 External Storage Hard Drive

Strengths:

aluminum with fan & excellent price

Weaknesses:

loose base, pretty big power brick

Posted Mar 25, 2006 - for the money this was an excellent buy...I put a 160gb Seagate in & did a quick format in 15 minutes...if offered @ this price again, I would buy another...it runs relatively quiet with a cheap fan so far, but I have (2) Ultra externals that are similar and after a few months the fans become noisy..hopefully not the case with this...the base is basic & slides out pretty easy, wish they had included a pair so it would be more stable but still would like to have bought 2 if I could have had a 2nd rebate...I expected cheaper but was pleasantly surprised

4 Star Review Z Disc External Storage

Strengths:

Easy to set up and cool looking case.

Weaknesses:

Typo in User Manual, page 2 (metal bars should be letter "H". The pictures on pages 3 and 4 are not consistant. The picture of assembly is missing the metal bars. HD write light could be another color

Posted Mar 24, 2006 - All in all, this unit was relatively easy to set and configure. At first, I didn't realize I needed to format the HD. XP recongnized the USB device, but Windows Explorer did not show the drive letter. I had to loosen the screws on the metal bars to get the HD to slide into the external storage case. I will recommend this product to others.

3 Star Review Noisy but effective HDD Enclosure

Strengths:

Aluminum; Fan

Weaknesses:

Hard to Install; Noisy Fan; cheap plastic looking front face

Posted Mar 23, 2006 - I've gone thru alot of enclosures in my time, and this ranks up there w/ one of the hardest to install! Definetely don't buy this enclosure if you plan on swapping drives in/out very often. Install time is likely twenty minutes or so, and you have to be careful to align everything up. But once you get it together, it did work first time, even attached to my Buffalo linkstation. I plan to leave it on 24/7, so I wanted to make sure that the hard drive had good cooling and heat dissipation. I believe that this unit will do the trick for me. However, the downside to all this is that since the fan is so tiny, it has to spin at a high RPM, leading to noisy operation. I KNOW this unit is on!! Might consider moving it to another spot in my office. One other minor knock is that the powder blue front/back panels are cheap looking, and kind of ugly! If you like 'em, great! I probably wouldn't have put the power button on the front panel, as I don't plan to power it down at all. But if you do, this might be a very convenient feature! So bottom line: It works as advertised, keeping the drive cool. It is kind of ugly, and not trivial to install. But the fan is noisy, which might be an issue if you plan on keeping it on all the time (which you probably are, if you are searching for an enclosure with a fan).

3 Star Review Not Bad

Strengths:

Aluminum, fan

Weaknesses:

Blue plastic back/front panels ugly. Plugging power button cable not cool.

Posted Mar 17, 2006 - Aluminum quality outside and cooling fan which some enclosures don't have. Looks nice and great and seem very durable. My first enclosure, so its all cool and good. Not bad, not bad.

1 Star Review Not a happy ending

Strengths:

Comes with fan

Weaknesses:

Tight fitting

Posted May 21, 2007 - At first it worked great. I had no problem installing my hdd maxtor 300gb. Sad to say one day the drive stopped reading. Luckly I was still able read the hdd by installing it internally thourgh my pc but my hdd will not work in any usb enclosure. I've tried to get some tech support but the contact telephone # is busy and I have yet to hear back from the email I sent on the matter.

4 Star Review Slick enclosure

Strengths:

LEDs, compact design, internal fan

Weaknesses:

Fan can get loud

Posted Apr 12, 2006 - Overall I like this product, it has status-indicating LEDs, an appealing, compact design, and is hot-swappable. Also it is backwards compatible with USB 1.1, which is a definite plus. The little fan can get pretty loud, I guess it must go at a pretty high RPM to make up for its lack of size. All in all, a good product worth what I paid for it.

4 Star Review Zdisc 3.5in Aluminum External Storage Hard Drive Enclosure

Strengths:

Aluminum Case with cooling fan.

Weaknesses:

USB cable is too short.

Posted Apr 4, 2006 - The case has nice looking. Cooling fan may get dirty or dusty after a while. The included USB cable is only 2.5 ft. It is somewhat less practical. I would like the cable to be 4 or 5 ft long. I will recommend this product to all users. However, if you use this as a backup device for your computer, you may need a longer USB cable.

4 Star Review Strongly Recommend this product

Strengths:

Slim, nice looking, easy to install, works just fine

Weaknesses:

none so far

Posted Mar 3, 2006 - I bought this product for my 200G external harddrive. So far, it works just fine. This product has a slim design so does not eat much of my desk space and it's quite easy to install I should say. What's more, the price is reasonable and the finishing looks nice. I will recommend this one to my friends.

4 Star Review Great enclosure for folks with hardware skills

Strengths:

Low price, small size, it has a fan

Weaknesses:

Not sure the fan is all that functional, tight fit, annoyingly bright LED's, short USB cable

Posted Jul 5, 2006 - Of the 4 brands of external kit enclosures I own, I'll buy more of these instead of the others. It costs less, is smaller, has a better vertical stand (one of the best designs I have seen). If you are a hardware person, you'll have no trouble assembling this unit, though you're unlikely to be raving about the instructions or the cabling design. The thing is so small that the drive is a very tight fit, so that's a plus and a challenge. I'll trade the few extra minutes' careful work for a very compact finished product. The reviewer that said that it would be tough to swap drives, that is correct. This is an assemble-and-leave-assembled unit. If you can't figure out what the metal plates are for and how they get installed, you should buy a pre-packaged solution and cease the illusion that you are a hardware geek. The instructions with this drive will not assist you much. Why the USB cable is so short is beyond me, however. Seems pointlessly short. If you think it's petty to mention the BRIGHT blue LED's, you won't if you'll have the drive sitting facing you while you work at your PC. Wear sunglasses or apply some tape. With a Maxtor 250G drive inside, no overheating or other problems have occurred in the 3 weeks it's been running.

4 Star Review Zdisc 3.5in Aluminum External Storage Hard Drive Enclosure

Strengths:

A simple little case that works.

Weaknesses:

There is no wealness in this product that costs less than$27.00 including tax and shipping.

Posted Apr 6, 2006 - External cases costs well over $100.00 not more than a couple of years ago (probably less than 2). I have bought cases by ADS and MAXTOR that costs $80.00 and $119.00 that have never worked. They we're far heavier and emitted more noise, and got very hot. (Heat is deadly to hard drives). I no longer care about brand names as all manufacturers out source their periferials and accessories, so you never know who's making the stuff anyway. This case works and that's the bottom line. It's very light and very small, so it doesn't take up valuable space either flat or on it's side, and it hasn't gotten hot. I highly reccomend this case. You can't beat the bang for the buck.
