I'm a relatively inexperienced photographer. I wanted an automatic 35mm SLR for a deployment to Afghanistan. After reading several reviews, I decided on the Maxxum 5. I was deployed for seven months in conditions ranging from snow and sleet to extreme dust. Overall, I was exceptionally happy with the results I got. The camera held up well (though I took care to not expose it to rain and snow), expecially in light of the dust. My main problems were that it took a little time to be comfortable with all the features. Automatic worked well, but to get the best pictures sometimes, you have to know all of the features. The only other problem is the plasic lens became scratched after months of exsposure to dust and left some streaks on some of my pictures. But, I rest assure you that the average photographer will not expose this camera to anywhere near the conditions I did. I would have liked to have seen some sort of included filter. I should have bought a filter myself, but being an amateur, I didn't think about that. The battery lasts a long time if you are convservative in its use. Overall, a great camera and well worth the money.

TopStrengths: Light weight, easy to use, very intuitive
Weakness: Small body for someone with big hands
I would recommend this camera to anyone who is taking an interest in photography. It is completely programable with some very stunning built in features. Again, worth the price.

Konica Minolta Minolta Maxxum 5 SLR Camera
Strengths: Lightweight, loaded with features.
Weakness: Haven't found any, yet.
This is a camera that can satisfy the demands of the beginner to the professional photographer.
With the five-icon functions that have become so popular with the novice photographers the camera is almost foolproof. The camera also has the most advanced features of any camera in its classs, which includes aperture prioity or shutter-speed priority or the user can choose to set the aperture and shutter-speed to match what the situation demands.
I take it everywhere, and with the optional battery holder, which uses rechargable AA batteries, I have power to spare and can charge one set while I'm using another.
All the Maxima lenses will fit it, which gives this camera's user a large array of lenses to choose from.
I reccommend this camera to every photographer I know.
