Turbotax Deluxe with State
Strengths:Is easier than doing taxes manually. Prevents math errors. Allows importing of brokerage information that can save days of work.
Weaknesses:Support is horrible. Takes forever to reach them and then you get incorrect information. This has happened for past 3 years.
Posted Dec 31, 2007 - For an average tax filer, using Turbotax is much easier than trying to fill out forms and follow printed instructions. However, for my complex taxes that run more than 20 pages, every year there is a bug that takes me many hours to resolve. For example, last year I tried a simple correction to the taxable interest I received from a broker, and without any indication Turbotax allocated the correction between taxable interest and non-taxable interest. This caused incorrect tax computations.
Another annoying bug is that it lets one enter a list of stocks donated to a charity and then truncates them on the tax form when it is printed. You have to guess at what will fit, renter the information and reprint your taxes.
Try not to call for support unless you have an easy question as an inexperienced user.
The software begins with an annoying screen that forces you to register. It keeps coming up until you register and then if you don't want them to contact you, you have to spend time updating your profile.
The product is difficult to use but taxes are a complicated issue. Personally I find a number of features poorly designed.
The main reason I use the product is because it is the only program that my broker allows for importing data. This saves me so many hours of time that it offsets the time I spend resolving Turbotax problems and cursing Intuit. For five years I have not found an easy way to send Intuit a detailed explanation of a problem and get a resolution, even if the resolution is in a future year.
I use it because it is better than manually doing taxes but I have many problems with it every year.
