The Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch Flat Panel LCD Monitor is a wide aspect desktop display that redefines the performance of LCD displays with a stylish Dell industrial design, and advanced functionality. Watch DVDs in natural format and run multiple applications simultaneously. Improve productivity with less scrolling and toggling. The 2005FPW wide aspect Flat Panel LCD also provides an excellent option for video editing and 3D imaging as both source and destination video can be viewed in a single window! With 4 USB 2.0 ports, 2 located on the side, the Dell 2005FPW gives users convenient access points to plug in devices such as keyboards, digital cameras, secondary hard drives and printers. It also supports advanced features such as PIP (picture in picture) and PBP (picture by picture) and can be activated with a touch of a button on the front of the display. With 5.1 inches (130 mm) of height adjustment virtually every user can adjust the display to their exact comfort level and help reduce eye and neck strain. minimize

Strengths:

Sharpness, WideScreen, Features

Weaknesses:

None.

Posted May 20, 2005 - This is my primary monitor and i use it for both work as well as watching movies, and it does both jobs admirably. Unlike some people may thing, the widescreen does not make using applications difficult. Common tasks like internet browsing or emailing work just fine on this monitor as well. The extra screen space is nice and movies look great on this. The monitor has lots of features like dual inputs (analog & DVI), its can be rotated and its height is adjustable as well. Plus it has 4 USB ports on it to connect USB peripherals like usb drives & keyboards etc. The monitor is very sharp and bright. I love working at this monitor and would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a 19"+ LCD monitor.

5 Star Review Dell UltraSharp LCD Monitors are fantastic

Strengths:

Fantastic picture quality, great response time, works well with gaming, CAD and general usage.

Weaknesses:

The price when it's not on sale. If you decide to purchase a Dell LCD do a search for SlickDeals and use all the coupons you can compound. You will be happy you did.

Posted Jul 28, 2005 - If you have an ATI powered videocard get the most recent Catalyst drivers. If you have an NVIDIA powered videocard get the most recent ForceWare drivers. If you have neither of those, check with whatever manufacturer you have for updated video drivers. After that, all the extra features this monitor offers are a breeze. This 16x10 wide-screen format monitor is fully capable of 4x3 (or other modes) with the appropriate videocard drivers installed. And the videocard and videocard drivers will control all the special extra modes and features this monitor offers.

2 Star Review Dell 2005FPW needs more manufacturing quality control, specifically the backlight

Strengths:

Its wide-aspect display(16x10) is definitely the future of display, plus universal flexible adjustments, USB hub, simply cable management, elegant design. competitive pricing. Minimum dead pixels.

Weaknesses:

At least the one I received had severe backlight leakage at all 4 corners almost like 4 spot lights. This problem doesn't seem to be uncommon for Dell 2005FPW based on other reviews.

Posted Jul 22, 2005 - I was very pleased with all its features/specs and price ($475), but I was very disappointed with the workmanship of this Dell LCD and had to return it. The 4 spotlight-like corners around the LCD screen (and pitch dark in the center) make it impossible to be comfortable to work in front of. They are so bright when in the blank screen saver mode or watching wide-screen movies, you can use it almost as a reading light. If you gently press the corners, the pressure will slightly seal the leakage a bit, therefore the lights around the screen dim down a bit. I already owned a few 19-inch LCD (BenQ and Princeton), none of them have such a "flimsy" problem. I am giving Dell the benefit of the doubt, I ordered a different LCD - Dell 2405FPW, and waiting for its arrival and quality check.

4 Star Review Dell 2005FPW is OK.

Strengths:

Good buy. Portrait mode, you don't have to scroll down as much. Bright. RGB & DVI cable provided. AC/DC power supply is built into the monitor. 3 year warranty.

Weaknesses:

Distorted pixel in upper left corner in landscape mode. Higher end video card needed to get the most out of the display. Dell service/support sucks; my opinion & experience.

Posted Jul 12, 2005 - If you don't do a lot of spread sheets or watch wide screen DVD's, I'd get a traditional LCD display. In landscape mode, moving the mouse Left to Right is large area. In portrait mode, you don't scroll down as much, so good for reading. My total cost was $433.60, utilizing the monitor sale, a $50 off coupon code, and another coupon code for opening a Dell preferred account.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

quality control is average

Posted May 3, 2005 - Bad things first: The monitor I got had 3 dead pixels, only noticeble when it's dark. Also there are some backlight issues as well. The one I got was from April 05, so I guess Dell hasn't resolved this issue yet. Good things: Very bright, had to turn the default brightness down to use it. Color is good. Contrast is good.

Strengths:

Wide aspect, very bright, big n flat - and not heavy. The image quality is amazing. Extra 4 USB ports are always useful. DVI, S-Video and VGA inputs. Adjust of height, angle and also twist.

Weaknesses:

Almost none for me, I just could see some blue light in the borders of the screen when it is everything black... not noticiable during normal use, games, etc. Could not use 75Mhz sometimes.

Posted Jun 29, 2005 - Before 2005FPW I had a Compaq 17" CRT Flat screen, the quality was also great, but the size of 20.1" wide is a huge difference, I am loving it. I use the PC mostly for games, but also some 3D modeling and web programing... so its a lot of "work space" available with very good quality. And also the price paid of less then $500 makes even a better deal. For the games that support its resolution makes the gaming experience even better. For those games that doesn't support, I will just have to use in a non distorted resolution and stick with some black area in both sides, no big deal.

Strengths:

Wide and bright screen. Crispy image. Multiple input connectors. Various display control. Tilt, pan, height adjustment.

Weaknesses:

PIP doesn't work for DVI and D-SUB. Contrast adjustment is disabled at DVI. 60Hz at 1680x1050

Posted May 26, 2005 - 2005FPW has satisfied me since it’s turned on. Two web browsers are opened during web surfing. I don’t need to push alt+tab to switch web browsers’ windows any more. 2005FPW changes my room to a small theater with Logitech X-530. The LCD gives me wide working area. While writing, there are four windows on the LCD; Winedit, DVI viewer, Acrobat, and dictionary. 2005FPW is really great LCD.

Strengths:

Read the reviews, there accurate, and if you decide to buy this monitor you won't be sorry.

Weaknesses:

Some backlight leakage.

Posted Mar 20, 2005 - I hesitated for a couple of months to buy this monitor but finally did and I am very impressed. This monitor is so bright I had to turn it down. I was a little worried about the resolution being so high that it would be hard to read, but the screen is so big and the text so clear that it isn't an issue. I had to hook it up to my ATI Radeon 9600 with analog first before the DVI would work (I blame that on the card, not the monitor) but it looks beautiful with DVI. People that see it just stare in amazement. I play games and do a lot of photo work with this monitor and never see ghosting. I have no dead pixels that I have seen yet, which was another worry. I don't find the pivot function useful for me and didn't buy based on that feature (FYI - you have to "pivot" your desktop manually before you physically pivot the monitor - it isn't automatic that I could figure out.)

4 Star Review Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW 20' LCD monitor

Strengths:

This monitor has incredible brightness and excellent resolution. The extra inputs and outputs are set up for future advanced hardware. The wide aspect viewing is keyed for future programing as well.

Weaknesses:

Because this monitor is set up for future expansion and programs, a lot of current programs don't necessarily support wide aspect viewing. Back lighting still an issue on black screen & DVD's

Posted Jul 7, 2005 - I find this to be the ideal monitor for multi-tasking, gaming and wide aspect viewing. Also, if the program that your using adapts to the wide aspect, it truly is the best looking wide aspect monitor for the price. Though not many programs or hardware adapt to wide aspect now, this monitor would be a good buy for those of you looking into the future. This way, when all or most of the future programs and hardware adapt to wide aspect, you will already have one of the best monitors for the job. The one constant issue that all these monitors have had is still with back lighting. As long as what you're viewing has color or brightness, it looks awesome. But when on black screen or DVDs with dark backgrounds in the shot, you still see White or Gray patches around the edges of the picture. So not ideal for DVD viewing. All in all, I found this to be great monitor. I would recommend it to everyone. Just save the DVDs for the big screen in the other room. Thanks, hope this helps.

Strengths:

Wide screen format, 1680x1050 resolution, slim bezel, DVI interface, crisp bright color, PIP mode, great price after rebate, Dell return policy.

Weaknesses:

Some backlight bleeding, speakers extra.

Posted May 7, 2005 - This 20" LCD is a great value. Their is a backlight issue with some of Dell monitors including this model but you can not notice it when their is color on the screen. I say for the value I can live with it. The only time you can see the backlight issue is when you first turn the unit on or when dim black color is on the screen and usually in the corners. You really have to look for it on my LCD. I received two 2005fpw LCD monitors and sent one back due to the backlight issue and two stuck pixels. Some seem to be worse than others. Dell return policy is great and they paid for return shipping. Some users of this model complain of the "screen door effect" I am unaware of this fault with my unit witch is a revised model A01 built 4/05. Another feature I like is the picture by picture mode, hook up the TV or another computer? I am happy with the LCD and it’s great for gaming or watching movies. I recommend this LCD for its value and crisp colors.

Strengths:

Amazing resolution; Brilliant colors; 'All' types of INPUTS. Very BRIGHT (see Comments). Very affordable.

Weaknesses:

Only available in Black. (Though the Silver trim on Black is nice.)

Posted Apr 17, 2005 - The best kept secret of the LCD monitors! Almost bought a Samsung 17" widscreen for the same price. Yet, the specs on this Dell outperforms the others. Many reviews complain about this monitor as being 'TOO BRIGHT'. When connected to the DVI port, adjustment is only available for BRIGHTNESS. CONTRAST adjustment is Disabled. Despite setting the Brightness to '0', many users still find this to be too bright. However, you may tweak the overall brightness by going into the Video Card properties. Each maker may vary. (My ATI Radeon card is under color management, and I was able to lower the brightness to my comfort level).

Strengths:

Great monitor on all levels except...

Weaknesses:

Significant backlight issues...read below

Posted Apr 15, 2005 - I have purchased this monitor new and direct from dell. I noticed the backlight issues (uneven backlight) out of the box: when looking at a dark scene in a DVD, or dark image in a game (or just a dark wallpaper), you will see that all corners of this monitor are either greyish-white or kinda orangish. The corners are unevenly lit from the backlight, causing the flaw. (All LCD screens require a backlight...a simple example: cheap LCD calculators...why can't you see 'em in the dark...no backlight. Timex digital watches use a backlight to allow you to see it in the dark.) What you see is basically a dark elipse in the center, and the corners that remain are off-black, and very noticeably so. I called Dell Tech Support...after going through several steps (by the way: unplug the monitor from the PC and you'll be in self-test mode if the monitor remains on...this is another way to clearly see the problem), they agreed to send me another one. Except, they sent me a refurbished one. After spending over $600, I was annoyed to see them send me a refurb. Anyhow, I plugged this one in, and same uneven backlighting problem, except all four corners on this one was more orangish than whitish. So now I decide to try for a third one, or just give up and send 'em both back and buy another model from another company altogether. The price-point is tempting, and the features are great, but for the money, the quality doesn't make the grade. Be warned!

3 Star Review Different look but the full is more useful.

Strengths:

Good price for size and quality of monitor. Clean picture and bright colors.

Weaknesses:

1050 vertical resolution is too limiting.

Posted Jul 28, 2005 - I bought this monitor earlier this year. So far, it's been as advertised. I was pleased to get a clean monitor after reading that many people who had gotten it earlier had reported issues with dead pixels and stuff. Setup was easy. There is a convenient cord management rubber holder thing on the back. The monitor also integrates well with my Dell 5650 speakers so I can clip the center channel speaker to the monitor itself. In addition to the two inputs, there are USB ports on the side which are pretty useful. I have a card reader and my Ipod cord currently attached to it. My biggest issue is the 1050 vertical resolution maximum. I knew about this beforehand so it wasn't a surprised, but I was surprised at how short the monitor seemed over all. It's still big enough to handle most applications, but I like to multi-task a lot and the vertical limit limits the resolution I can use. I prefer 1200 btw. This is a definitely a nice monitor, but given the falling prices and the new 2405 that came out, I am seriously considering passing this on to my parents and getting the 2405. This is definitely enough for a casual computer user, but I would rather have one with better vertical stats. I have not been playing any pc games recently so I couldn't tell you how the widescreen format is with games. Viewing videos in widescreen has been nice.
