Strengths:

Files can be modified the same as if on the hard drive. There is enough capacity to handle large files...unlike the older 100MB discs. Makes it very easy to move files from one computer to another.

Weaknesses:

If the disc gets messed up, they charge a very high price to retrieve data.

Posted Oct 6, 2004 - I started with a 100MB drive years ago, upgraded to a 250MB and now 750MB. Many newer laptops no longer have floppy drives so to have a way to quickly store files and/or move them to another computer, a USB zip drive is very handy. The size of the drive has shrunk over the years so it is now very easy to pack for travel. It's just a nice inexpensive option for moving information.

Strengths:

Smaller & Lighter Weight than previous external parallel port Zip 100's.

Weaknesses:

Front eject button flush with case, not raised, and located a bit under the extended lip of an inserted cartridge; not easy and convenient to locate and depress.

Posted Dec 23, 2004 - Annoying whine for 60 seconds before and 60 seconds after otherwise noisy operations during which nothing else appears to be happening. Clunking and banging had me wondering about lubrication. I was unprepared for this USB model device to also require continuous connection to 110 volt power supply (included) to apparently provide 5 volts for its operation. Either, my fault for not doing enough research, or advertising and reviews have ignored this point.

Strengths:

fast, dependable

Weaknesses:

the software provided with the unit apparently does not integrate entirely with the Mac OSX environment

Posted Nov 10, 2004 - For about the last 9 years I have used a succession of Zip drives--100mb, 250mb and now 750mb and I have been more than pleased with the results. Now in making the switch to system 10 (10.3.6) I find that I can no longer utilize the option of having the drive autoeject the disk at startup and shutdown. In talking with the tech support people at Iomega, I was told that this was because Apple has not provided them with the code necessary to write this software. This has been a fine product and I find it hard to believe that something so simple would make me reconsider my enthusiasm for the Zip drive.

Strengths:

Compact, fast (when using USB 2.0), & quiet. Cool looking also.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Mar 8, 2005 - Excellent for archiving and backing up large folders and files. Great also for transporting large folders / files from one computer to another when a LAN / Broadband network connection is unavailable or impractical. Also good is its backward compatibility with ZIP 250 (write / read) and ZIP 100 (read only)disks.

2 Star Review External Zip 750MB USB Drive

Strengths:

Smaller & Lighter Weight than previous external parallel, The best thing I like is it small and fast. But everyone have a different experinence.

Weaknesses:

No on/off power button. The drive would hang on occasion when I sought to copy files and would force me to reboot my computer. The motor eventually failed - 10 days after warranty expired.

Posted Jul 23, 2005 - i am not very much satisfied with this product,I purchased three of these external drives I got in good price in clearence - for use in making quick transfers of data files and some minor backup work. One of the drives has worked quite well; The other has displayed eratic behavior and performance, often forcing me to reboot my computer to stop the drive from hanging up (Windows XP describes the performance as the drive not responding). Finally, the motor on the drive simply stopped working. It is good but not too good as my experince but u can keep them if U get in good deal or a gift then they are the best ones :-) but to spend money and buy them I will not perfer.

3 Star ReviewI purchased two of these external drives - one for ...

Strengths:

The 750 MB usb drive was a good medium for transfering files between work and home. It was relatively speedy and had an ease of use that was similar to a floppy drive.

Weaknesses:

No on/off power button. The drive would hang on occasion when I sought to copy files and would force me to reboot my computer. The motor eventually failed - 10 days after warranty expired.

Posted Apr 29, 2005 - I purchased two of these external drives - one for each of my two computers for use in making quick transfers of data files and some minor backup work. One of the drives has worked quite well; it does not hang when trying to access it or copy to or from it. The other has displayed eratic behavior and performance, often forcing me to reboot my computer to stop the drive from hanging up (Windows XP describes the performance as the drive not responding). Finally, the motor on the drive simply stopped working. I contacted Iomega but their tech support said there was nothing that they could do since the drive was 10 days beyond the one-year warranty period (one year from the invoice date on the purchase). The performance on the one drive that has continued to work is fine. It is quite speedy and has been reliable. However, none of these drives has an on/off button so you either have to shut off the power by pulling the plug or leave the drive powered up all the time. The construction is outwardly flimsy and very light weight. The construction and reliability is definitely inferior to the two SyQuest EZ135 drives which I purchased 8 or 10 years ago and are still working perfectly. Unfortunately, the EZ135 drives are not made any more, are no longer supported by anyone, and can only be controlled by the buttons on the drive (and not by the software control program) in Windows XP.

Strengths:

Easy setup, and it works.

Weaknesses:

Write speed is a little slower than read. IOMEGA DOES NOT INCLUDE A DISK WITH THE RETAIL PACKAGE. YOU HAVE TO BUY THEM SEPERATELY!

Posted Nov 19, 2002 - I've had zip drives for years, from the beginning, and this one is the best one (except for the fact that they don't include media with it. Should I mention it again?).

Also good about it, is its backward compatibility with ZIP 250 (write / read) and ZIP 100 (read only) disks. I would recommend it to buy because of nice experience so far so good.

2 Star Review Good drive, but obsolete

Strengths:

Good quality

Weaknesses:

other drives better

Posted Sep 5, 2005 - I’ve only had it for about two months. And I only used it once to transfer files from an old 750MB ZIP disk, which is exactly the reason that I bought it when it’s on sale. It’s a nice drive, really, but I wouldn’t recommend it to any friends since it seems to be an obsolete technology.

3 Star Review Iomega Zip 750MB USB 2.0 External Review

Strengths:

More capacity for Zip users; read Zip 250/100 slightly faster; good Windows/Mac backup software.

Weaknesses:

Poor backward compatibility; relatively expensive media

Posted Jan 6, 2006 - 750MB Zip's late entry won't get people to switch from CD-R/W, but organizations relying on Zip will welcome the extra storage. What started out as the likely successor of the decade old 1.44MB floppy format is now the contender to the ever popular CD-R/W media. Iomega?s third generation Zip 750MB offers a tad more capacity than CD-RW disc and some nifty backup software, but falls short in terms of speed, compatibility and media cost. Zip Grows Up

4 Star Review Iomega External Zip 750MB USB 2.0 Powered Drive w/o Cartridge

Strengths:

A VERY GOOD DRIVE

Weaknesses:

NONE

Posted Dec 18, 2005 - The fastest Zip drive--the Zip 750 MB drive--is also the most durable storage solution for backing up and archiving your important data. The Zip 750 MB drive transfers data at an amazing 7 Mbps, making it the fastest and the highest-capacity of all Zip drives and disks yet.
