4 Star Review Baten Kaitos Origins

Strengths:

Exclusive RPG for the GC, beautiful graphics, hard-core card-based RPG play

Weaknesses:

The card-based battling may not be for everyone

Posted Jan 8, 2008 - Baten Kaitos Origins is a prequel to the Gamecube-exclusive RPG Baten Kaitos. In this second iteration, which was one of the last big game releases for the Gamecube (followed really only by Zelda Twilight Princess), the card battle system has been simplified a bit. However, the game can still be very difficult if you get the wrong mix of random cards from your deck during any given battle. Also, you will be required to level up to handle certain bosses. Someone who enjoys RPGs and likes to explore will have no problem with this. Someone who wants to rush through may find it frustrating though. There is much more freedom of exploration in this version than in the original. You can fly around and explore the big world and engage in plenty of sidequests to keep you busy for quite a while. Overall, for any RPG fan I would recommend this game, especially as RPGs on the Gamecube were few and far between.

Strengths:

Great story, nice character designs, entertaining battle system

Weaknesses:

Voice acting

4 Star Review BK 2 worth your money?

Strengths:

+battle system improved +graphics improved +limited characters

Weaknesses:

-new battle system can have a learning curve -new strategy is involved in gameplay

Posted Nov 8, 2007 - If you've played the 1st BK would be worth picking up after all this game can be found for about 20-30 USD depending on your location. Also an excellent consideration for others as this game as some outstanding RPG elements to be found. Although this game is a prequel to the original you may still find the story satisfying after all.

4 Star Review One of GC's Best RPG's (not really saying much though)

Strengths:

Interesting Card System, prequel to original Baten Kaitos

Weaknesses:

like the first one, HORRIBLE voice acting

Posted Oct 29, 2007 - BK: Origins is a fun game, and a good (just shy of great) RPG by anyone's standards. Being on the RPG starved Gamecube, it ranks even higher. It has a nice long quest, but the randomness of the battles (you get cards from your "deck" to do actions, but you rely on a lot of luck to get the cards you want when you want them) and the overall difficulty of some of the battles may make this more for the hardcore RPG fan than the casual fan.

4 Star Review Card Battle RPG Gaming On The GameCube Again

Strengths:

Long Game, Sharp Graphics, Good Blend of Music

Weaknesses:

Voice Acting Can Be Lacking, Randomness of Battle System

Posted Oct 29, 2007 - Baten Kaitos Origins is a prequel to the first Baten Kaitos game on the GameCube hence the Origins sub title. The gameplay itself while changed around with some minor things is still a card based battle system RPG so for the most part it is a love it hate it kind of game and if you enjoyed the first Baten Katios you'll also like Origins. Baten Katios Orignis is a long game just has the first one was and will keep you busy for 50+ hours if you do all or a good chunk of the side quests that the game offers and it's good to take part in the side quests to help power up your characters as if you don't you will find yourself not strong enough at some points in the game to beat some of the tougher bosses. The randomness of the cards you get from your deck during battle can be frustrating as you might not get the cards you need as you might get a healing card that you'll probably need later during the battle but will be taking up a valuable spot in your hand of cards if you don't discard it. I would highly recommend renting Baten Katios Origins to anyone that has not played the first game to give the unique card battle system a test run before buying but to anyone that likes the first game they are bound to also enjoy Origins and I would highly recommend it to them.

5 Star Review Spirit of the Wings

Strengths:

voice acting-its excellent, especially the dual voices of guillo, battle system-is fast and its fun to rack up combos, sidequests-game has a ton of sidequests including a colisseum, music is superb.

Weaknesses:

can't skip cutscenes, some unfair boss battles, not enough new towns, dungeons-

Posted Sep 16, 2007 - baten kaitos origins is a great rpg, it improves greatly on the original baten kaitos game. the new battle system is excellent-it makes competing in colisseum battles so much fun. the music is great best music in any gamecube, xbox or ps2 rpg-its that good. i've enjoyed both baten kaitos games, its made me a fan of card playing rpgs.

3 Star Review Pretty Good Game

Strengths:

Good story and nice graphics

Weaknesses:

Some fights can be unreasonably hard

Posted Sep 15, 2007 - If you've played this first Baten Kaitos and enjoyed it, then there's no doubt you'll like this as well. If you didn't like the first one, then you'll probably have the same opinion about this game as well. For those that don't know, it's a pretty good RPG if you can get past how the battle system works. To make it easy, you basically use cards to determine your attacks. The only downside is if you get a bad draw, you'll probably lose. It's actually hard to say whether you'll like this or not, but I'd say give it a try.

4 Star Review A great followup to an underappreciated game

Strengths:

Intriguing storyline, awesome battle system

Weaknesses:

Gets bogged down in RPG "deliver X to Y" tasks

Posted Aug 12, 2007 - Baten Kaitos Origins was a title I was looking forward to for a long time, based on the fun I'd had with the original. What I got was a game with a completely revamped (and probably superior) battle system, a great story, and a lot of new trappings--such as a coliseum and some neat sidequests--that showed just how to make a sequel to a great game. Unfortunately the game did bog down somewhat in some ridiculously convoluted quests required in the main game, usually of the form of playing delivery-boy for some pointless item. When not slogging through these, though, the game is excellent. Strongly recommended.

4 Star Review A Definite Improvement

Strengths:

Graphics and sound, story.

Weaknesses:

Too many fetch quests, battles can drag on too long due to the card system.

Posted Aug 10, 2007 - Baten Kaitos Origins improves on its predecessor in almost every way. Primarily, the battles are generally faster, the card system is simplified, and the storyline is less cliche. The graphics and music are just as excellent as in Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings, though some locations will be very familiar. Recommended for RPG fans looking for something different.

3 Star Review BK Origins is not about Burger King.

Strengths:

Plays well. Card style game that doesn't suck.A lot of gameplay.

Weaknesses:

A little hardcore. It's card based for those that don't like that.

Posted Jun 14, 2007 - BK Origins is the sequel to one of the first RPG's on the Gamecube and is actually one of the last. It's a turn/card based RPG and can seem very difficult at times. But if you liked Baten Kaitos, there's a lot here. Well over sixty hours of gameplay and more. It's really meant for the hardcore RPG fan because of the bruising difficulty of some of the battles and combat system.

4 Star Review Baten

Strengths:

Card based combat, Graphics, Story

Weaknesses:

nothing added to series

Posted May 31, 2007 - This is a sequel to be pretty decent RPG game for the Gamecube. RPG on the GC is rare in itself, so its nice that the offerings are good. Its more of the same from the first title, with upgraded graphics and a somewhat longer story. The story is improved in my opinion. This is most likely the last RPG to be released on GC, so its a good idea to pick it while you can. If you are new to the series, its a prequel so you can either play this first then the original, or vice versa. Either way should be a rewarding experience.

4 Star Review BK Origins

Strengths:

RPG for GC, card type games, graphics, story, music

Weaknesses:

pretty much the same game

Posted May 10, 2007 - This is a long game. The story is great. This game is longer than the first one that came out. It is more than 60 hours. If you like games that are long, pick this up. The graphics looks better than the original. Music is great. The battle system is card-based. If you like the first game, buy this one also. You will like it.

4 Star Review As good as the first

Strengths:

One of the few rpgs for the cube, decent story, great visuals

Weaknesses:

Level grinding and backtracking

Posted May 2, 2007 - If you played Baten Kaitos and hated the combat engine, this isn't the game for you. It is card based, but closer to Magic the Gathering than Lost Kingdoms. You use the cards to attack, with a math-lite approach to combos. I found it enjoyable and entertaining throughout. This game, like the first weigh in at over 35 hours. If you haven't played the first, you won't lost anything by going straight to this. Both games play similarly, but I probably like Origins better. And for those of you with a Wii, this is a great title to pick up while you are waiting for new games. The audio and visuals are topnotch as the developer knows how to push aging hardware. It is a shame it seems to have been released without much attention.

5 Star Review Last great Gamecube RPG

Strengths:

continuation of story, great characters, great voice acting

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Mar 14, 2007 - This game is excellent. It is a card based RPG with a good story. The voice acting in this game is truly superb. One of my favorite aspects is the fact you only get 3 characters, so there is no need to worry about characters getting underleveled. Also, if you played the first game, you will enjoy all the allusions to it since this game is a prequel. Do yourself a favor, and pick this one up.
