5 Star Review Great RPG!

Strengths:

Beautiful graphics, great music, innovative combat system, interesting plot and unexpected twists, 40+ hours of gameplay, innovative level-up system, character stories have an interesting development

Weaknesses:

Battles may get a little boring, no in-game CG cinematics (except for the intro), bad voice acting, the plot has a slow start

Posted Jul 8, 2005 - The first thing i have to mention about Baten Kaitos is graphics. Environments are beautifully designed and colored, which is something very enjoyable in any RPG. Battle graphics are amazing too: monsters, magics, and finishing attacks look really cool. What about music? Well, does Motoi Sakuraba ring a bell? He composed the music for Star Ocean, and for all of you who have played it, you'll be happy to know he's done an excellent work in BK too. From sad music to inspiring or cheering themes, each one fits perfectly in every scene, giving every moment a special atmosphere. Something i can't forget to mention is battle music: these themes are some of the best ones i've ever heard! The standard battle music (called "The True Mirror") is a violin theme, but don't be fooled by the sweet violin sound, because this music really cheers the battle up and makes it incredibly enjoyable and entertaining. What about boss battle themes? Well, let me just say there are 6 boss battle themes! One of them is a guitar, rock version of "The True Mirror", which is my personal favorite along with a Rock/Metal theme called "Metallic Stroke". There's also a dance theme called "Chaotic Dance" which plays only with a particular boss... really cool, too. The battle system is the element that makes this game very special. In BK, you use "Magnus", which are cards that have an object's essence trapped in it. You'll have to equip these magnus into your deck so that you can use them in battle to attack your foes, defend yourself, or heal your characters. At the beginning of each battle, some of the magnus cards of your deck randomly appear at the bottom screen (the number of cards depends on your class level). You can use up to 9 magnus in a single turn. The numbers at the corners of each battle magnus card are used to give bonuses to the offense or defense of your character. Depending on how you combine these numbers or what order you give them, you'll get a bonus to the total damage you deal or the damage you prevent. Gaining these bonuses (called prizes) is a matter of life or death. Depending on how many cards you play in a turn, these prizes add a percentage of the damage you deal, from small percentages like 9%, to an incredible 306%, being an incredible help when fighting a tough foe or when you need to heal a damaged ally. Some magnus have elemental properties. There are six elements in BK, which are paired in an opposing relationship: fire and water, dark and light, and wind and chronos. Magnus offset and cancel each other if they have elements in opposition. You must use these elements to increase damage when you're attacking or to reduce damage inflicted when you're defending. Something i didn't like about the battle system is that you can only target one enemy per turn. Once you have selected an enemy and selected your first magnus, you can't switch to attack another enemy until the next turn. Another think i didn't like is that there aren't any magnus or attacks that affect more than one target, which makes battles a little longer or even boring and repetitive. In BK, you have to go to a church and "pray" in order to level up, besides, yo can choose how many levels you wish to go up, which is a very interesting element if you want to complete the game in the lowest level possible, for example, just to add some challenge to the game. The plot is a little slow at the beginning, but it gets pretty interesting as time passes, having some unexpected, incredible twists in it. It's a really good story, and it's worth playing for about 60 hours just to see how the story ends. You won't regret it. While you play the game, you'll learn a little more about each of the 6 characters that will be in your party. Trust me, their stories are very interesting and worth seeing. Now what really disappointed me is that the only cinematic video was the intro. The other cutscenes just have the same graphics as the normal game scenes, except that they have different camera angles and close ups. However, this is quite understandable, because the game is too long and graphics are already good, so i guess the programmers couldn't find enough space in the 2 discs to put more cool cinematics. Voice acting is really bad in BK! It looks like actors just spoke their lines without giving them a little feeling or trying to act too much. This doesn't happens all the time, though, besides, there's an option in the menu screen to turn off the voices, so that you can just read the dialogues. With great music, an interesting story, and an innovative battle system, BK is a perfect choice. However, i didn't like it as much as other RPGs, like Final Fantasy &, 7, or Tales of Symphonia, but that's just a personal opinion. If you like RPGs, you can't miss this game. I would recommend downloading some gameplay videos, so that you can see how the battle system works.

4 Star Review BATEN KAITOS ETERNAL WINGS

Strengths:

huge world to explore, long adventure (50+ hours) on 2 discs

Weaknesses:

card battle system can get confusing and overwhelming

Posted Jan 7, 2008 - BATEN KAITOS ETERNAL WINGS is a third person RPG for the Gamecube. It is set in a fairy tale land where the people reside in floating islands in the sky and evolve and grow feathered wings. You play as Kalas, a young man charged with the responsibility of preventing an evil cult from resurrecting a powerful and dark god. Along the way u will acquire allies such as a former knight and a mystical wizard. The game play is turn based RPG style but u fight against your enemies via a card based system. All of your supplies and weapons and armor in the game are in the form of Magnus cards which will evolve and change form over time. Thus, your food supply can basically spoil if you do not use them soon enough. U have several hundred different cards to choose from and acquire which adds great variety to the gameplay. The card based battle system can get overwhelming at times because there is so much to manage in terms of Magnus and the several items each character in your party has. The game world is huge and beautiful and is a joy to explore. Also, the game music is pretty and melodious and adds to the appeal factor to this game. I highly recommend getting this if u are a big RPG fan.

3 Star Review One of the good RPGs available for GameCube.

Strengths:

Good graphics. Good storyline.

Weaknesses:

The whole audio of the game is not as good as the rest of the game.

Posted Oct 30, 2007 - Baten Kaitos is one of the first good RPG for GameCube. Namco has once again provided great graphics to their product. The world environment of the game is quite stunning and character details are fairly good. Not unlike other games, especially RPGs, the player takes control of the main character and along the way, gained companions to help battle the evil that threatens the world. However, the storyline of Baten Kaitos is actually quite good. The battling system might remind some older RPG gamers the old NES RPG games. For newer games, it might take some used to, but should not be too hard. The whole audio part of the game, the music, the SFX, and the voice acting, is not as good as the rest of the game, which might make the whole experience of the game not that much enjoyable. As with modern RPG games, the player has to take some time to learn how to play the game and its techniques. The audio part of the game is somewhat disappointing. Overall, the game itself is pretty good and is one of the few good RPG games for GameCube.

4 Star Review Baten Kaitos

Strengths:

Solid RPG for the otherwise RPG deficient Gamecube

Weaknesses:

Voice acting is not so good

Posted Oct 26, 2007 - Baten Kaitos is a solid role playing game for the Nintendo Gamecube, which is a good thing as the system lacked RPGs. The graphics are decent, the music is great, the story is good, and the enemies are visible (no random encounters). The battle system is a love-it-or-hate-it type of thing as it is card based. Instead of having a regular inventory of items, you have a set of cards and can put the essence of items you find in the game world onto your cards. These can then be used in combat for attack or healing purposes, for example. It is an interesting concept and a nice departure from the typical RPG battle mechanics. The game also has its share of sidequests and minigames (even including shooter sequences). Baten Kaitos and its sequel are hidden gems of the Gamecube system and well worth picking up for any Gamecube or Wii owner.

3 Star Review One of the best (and only) RPGs on the Cube

Strengths:

Beautiful visuals

Weaknesses:

Most of it was forgettable

Posted Sep 3, 2007 - Baten Kaitos catered to a market that was pretty starved on the Cube, that of RPGs. While it was a competent game with some fantastic background visuals, the game on a whole was fairly lackluster. The card-based battle made things far too random, as is the wont of that mechanic. The story and voice acting were less than spectacular which tended to hurt the overall impression of the game. It's hard to recommend against Baten Kaitos if you're looking for a new RPG, but at the least pick up Tales of Symphonia first.

4 Star Review Card Battle RPG Gaming

Strengths:

Long Game, Presentation, Graphics

Weaknesses:

Card Battle System May Not Be For Everyone

Posted Aug 14, 2007 - Baten Kaitos is a RPG that relies on cards to represent items in your inventory and commands during battle. When you first start the game you will have blank cards in which you will put item into as you get them. During battle you will have to go though your cards and pick a card for the action you want to do during battle and as you progress though the game you will even be able to figure out certain combinations of cards that will do certain things if you use them together during battles. When you get experience in Baten Kaitos instead of just leveling up you will have to go to a church and manually distribute the experience into what you want powered up and while it is interesting it can be somewhat chore like to have to do this to power up your characters and even bad if you forget to level up and engage in say a boss fight. I would recommend renting Baten Kaitos before buying as being so wildly different it's going to be a love it or hate it kind of game but for gamers that do like it, it's a long involving game with hours of gameplay and plenty of extra side quests to keep gamers busy even after beating the game.

4 Star Review Great Gamecube RPG

Strengths:

Beautiful Visuals, Great Soundtrack, Lengthy Story

Weaknesses:

Voice Acting, can get tedious, card-battle system is kind of love it/hate it

Posted Aug 3, 2007 - This game is one of the few RPGs on Gamecube, and a great one at that. The story is unique and is lengthy. The game takes over 35 hours to complete, so this game will be in your Gamecube for a long time. The card-battle system is great if you like creating your own deck, which there are over 1000+ cards to choose from. I found the game to get tedious at some points, but once you plow through the slower parts, the game picks up again. The only "bad" thing about the game is the voice acting, which is awful at some points. Other than that, this game is a great RPG.

4 Star Review Baten Kaitos

Strengths:

Just an excellent game all around.

Weaknesses:

Voice acting is pretty mediocre

Posted Jul 31, 2007 - Baten Kaitos is one of the few Gamecube RPGs to play, luckily it is worthwhile. It has many of the key components to make up a great role playing game. It has excellent visuals, a unique card based battle system, a strong story and a truly awesome soundtrack. The only real weakness is the stiff voice acting. It isn't so bad that it detracts from gameplay though. Baten Kaitos and its prequel are definitely worth checking out for all Gamecube owners.

4 Star Review Baten Kaitos

Strengths:

Very good graphics and gameplay.

Weaknesses:

Not much.

Posted Jul 27, 2007 - One of the best role playing game RPG for the Gamecube. The card based system is a welcome change to typical turn based RPG's. The graphics is absolutely beautiful. This game will keep you in front of your TV for hours and hours. This is one of those games that you have to buy.

4 Star Review It's pretty

Strengths:

Great graphics, good music

Weaknesses:

Card battle system may turn off some

Posted Jul 26, 2007 - So is this game fun? If you like RPG's, then yes, you'd probably get your money's worth out of this. To attack and such, you will randomly get some cards to choose from. That's pretty much where luck comes in. If this turns you off, then you know this isn't for you. But if this sounds playable still, then you'll love this.

4 Star Review Fun, nice lookingm engrossing RPG

Strengths:

Great graphics, good gameplay length, nice sonudtrack

Weaknesses:

Almost a little too much to do and learn for most players, some weird game mechanic choices

Posted May 25, 2007 - Baten Kaitos was a surprise. An unassuming RPG for the fledgling Gamecube. So it was good to see a game coming for Nintendo's system like this. The game is quite enjoyable and the graphics are quite attractive. There is lot to do and lots of cards to collect to use in battle. There is quite a bit to do, so this game you will definitely get your money out of. The most annoying thing about the game is that the voice acting sounds weird at times and can be too grating. Also new to RPG players may get lost with everything there is to do. But otherwise this is definitely a solid title.

5 Star Review Just Beautiful

Strengths:

Beautiful artwork and music. Fun card-based RPG.

Weaknesses:

Iffy voice acting.

Posted Apr 28, 2007 - Baten Kaitos has some of the most beautiful artwork you will see in any Gamecube game, along with a wonderful and varied soundtrack. The card-based fighting is a nice change up from the standard RPG and is executed really well here. The only minor issue I have is that the voice acting isn't very good. Still if you're looking for a fun RPG, you've found it.

4 Star Review An Epic RPG

Strengths:

Nifty battle system, excellent music.

Weaknesses:

Boring and formulaic story for the first half of the game.

Posted Mar 19, 2007 - Baten Kaitos is easily one of the best RPGs for the Gamecube. The card-based battle system is surprisingly fun and fast-paced even to someone unfamiliar with card RPGs. The plot, while initially boring and predictable, has a memorable twist that perhaps makes the journey worthwhile. My favorite part of BK, though, is the music - it's truly memorable and well-done. Definitely worth a play-through for RPG fans.

4 Star Review A unique but welcome addition to Gamecube's RPG library. . .

Strengths:

Unique card-based battle system, hundreds of cards change over time, interesting game play world, rich 2D environments to explore, 50 hours of game play over two discs

Weaknesses:

Odd voice distortion, unhelpful level-up timing, not much back story, random luck of draw on card availability during battles, bland 3D character detail

Posted Mar 14, 2007 - Developer Monolith Soft is perhaps best known for creating the popular Xenosaga series, and with Baten Kaitos (roughly translates to "belly of the whale" from Arabic) they have created yet another unique and entertaining role-playing game. The world of Baten Kaitos involves a series of floating islands in the sky and the winged people who live there. The player takes the role of a guardian spirit to one of the characters and is spoken to directly at different points in the game. Unfortunately, you can only level up at certain locations, so you may find yourself backtracking to do this prior to big boss fights. The random draw of cards during a given battle can also leave you without the necessary attack or defense abilities for several rounds. Gamecube owners have had relatively few role-playing games to choose from, so Baten Kaitos is a welcome addition to its gaming stable. The card battle system can be complex at times, but any Gamecube-owning RPG fan should pick this game up without a second thought, especially now that the asking price has dropped below $20.
