4 Star Review TomTom GO 910 [Reviewed]

Strengths:

- Good Overall Design - Easy to Use & User Friendly Interface - Wide range of Voices & Accents all w/ Superb Clarity of Speech - Feature Rich (BT, iPod etc.) - Huge Hard Drive w/ Built-in-Maps

Weaknesses:

- A bit bulky to easily store in a bag/purse/pocket - Just a tad too heavy - Reset Button is a little difficult to locate - Windshield Mount Device is impossible turn/lock!!!

Posted Jun 7, 2007 - Overall this is a Great product!!! Anyone looking for a Navigation solution would be more than pleased with this device. It's Attractive; has a Large Display; Is Easy to Input, Read, Hear & Understand; about 95% accurate (in all uses I've put it through on the East Coast, across America & throughout Europe - will test Canada, PR & HI soon ;-) And it's FAST!!! What else can one ask for in a Good GPS/Navigation Solution!? Did I mention you can use it for Biking and Pedestrian navigation!? Separate Paths & Directions are displayed when either of these options is specified. As a pure GPS/Navigation solution this unit would be fantastic, but throw in all the added bonuses like the Huge Hard Drive, iPod Compatibility and ability to pair w/ your BT Phone for Hands free calling and it's 'almost' perfect! Yes 'almost'! It's not perfect for just the few reasons I mentioned above...weight/bulk, and the elusive reset button (not that you will need to reset the device often). I believe with present technology, this device could be made thinner and lighter, thus more portable. I'm not sure why it's as heavy as it is (besides the HD) but it makes carrying it in hand for pedestrian navigation a little awkward. My only REAL issue is with the almost impossible to turn fastening, suction hold on the windshield mount! I've only been able to turn it one notch to the 'set/hold' position...never to the actual 'Locked' position. Granted, the unit stays secured to the windshield throughout my trips, but the reassurance of it being locked in place is very difficult to achieve. It's a combination of requiring too much force to turn the control, while the device is mounted and the reach/position is very difficult for 2 finger turning. I've often had to ask the Front Seat Passenger to turn the device to the Set/Hold position for me, because it's so difficult to do from the Driver's seat, if you're mounting it on the center of the windshield of a sedan (or any vehicle with a slightly deep dashboard). That's very poor design and should be fixed by TomTom. Other than that, the device is so feature rich, it's a bit absurd. The ability to do stuff like get traffic & weather updates (service fee required) and alternate routes on the fly is great. The screen views are terrific (allowing you to see your route out ahead of turns etc) and customizable, allowing for nighttime driving screen adjustments etc. If you select one of 2 computer voices, they can actually annunciate street names and such. Great if you like the re-assurance that you are on the right track without having to look to the screen. Map updates still don't reflect some road changes that have been in effect for about a year or more now in the US but like I said before, it seemed to be about 95% accurate. It was a snap changing to the pre-loaded maps for Europe, and if you've ever driven in Europe w/ a foreign car with foreign language written/spoken navigation instructions (if you're lucky enough to get such a sophisticated GPS in your rental car) you'll immediately appreciate a familiar voice and accent to guide you on your route. And just in case you need to ask a foreign-local for more specific directions, your device speaks multiple languages as well, so you can switch languages to accommodate a local/guide or to help your Taxi driver find that remote location you're trying to get to...That's an A+ in my book! If you intend to use this device w/ a PC (not a requirement) you will find the ability to use the device’s screen on the PC very familiar and comfortable. You can interact with the device to pr-program routes etc. as easily as you would if it were in your hand. You will need to connect to your PC to get any firmware updates and for iPod syncing etc. The TomTom Go Home application’s structure is a little weird and takes a bit of getting used to, but you’ll get the hang of it eventually. I can't say enough about this device. It's a Winner for anyone's taste! The price is a bit steep, but if you shop around - like I did - you can find discounts in the $50 - $100 range which is even nicer, considering all you get for the price. Definitely worth the money and then some. You won't go wrong on this purchase!!! EM

5 Star Review TomTom 910 Portable US/EMEA Navigation GPS

Strengths:

Easy to use, fast respond, include US and Europe map, 20GB hard drive for MP3 is also a nice bonus

Weaknesses:

Unstable windshield mount

Posted May 25, 2007 - Good for general use GPS; very easy to use and fast recalculate the route once you go off the direction or miss a turn. It has turn-by-turn direction. This is the cheapest GPS w/ both US/Europe map, bluetooth, and 20GB hard drive. The 4" screen easy to see and not block the view when you have it on the dashboard or windshield. It is also small enough for you to carry from car to car, like when you have rental car, etc. The only thing I didn't like about this unit is the mount is weak, can use an improvement in the design.

2 Star Review TomTom go 910---- STOPPED WORKING

Strengths:

nice features

Weaknesses:

Cannot hold still on the windshield even though it has a locking system. QUESTIONABLE ELECTRONIC PERFORMANCE. My tomTom just went dead while I'm driving. Yes! its plugged in and 100% recharged.

Posted Sep 4, 2007 - I ended up returning it to the store and bought "Garmin" instead. I have to dread to pay 15% restocking fee to Circuit City. I got lost for 2 hours trying to find my way home when we went out of town.

2 Star Review Two dead out of two

Strengths:

Unmatched usabilty, nice nav screens, fast route updates

Weaknesses:

Poor quality control, MP3 player very buggy, bluetooth issues, outdated point of interest database. Need a pen to type addresses.

Posted Apr 21, 2007 - Hard drive failed on the 1st, the 2nd stopped turning on after one week, MP3 Player buggy, poor bluetooth calling. Two units died out of two, didn't try a third. If you buy this get the extended waranty. The Garmin 660 isn't much better. Still searching for a nav with bluetooth that won't die.

3 Star Review Wow! I love this GPS. It has so much! But there is a problem.....

Strengths:

Quick start, Nice interface, Full of Funtionality.

Weaknesses:

problem with the windshield mount, very bulky.

Posted Dec 28, 2007 - this is one of the best GPS i have owned that comes packed with features. It has Blutooth for handsfree calling. There are lot of voices from different countries and its Fun to hear them. Maps are accurate. Never lost signal. The only problem was with the windshield mount which seems to be not really made for this unit as it does not hold on the weight of the GPS and droops from time to time. I think it is a known problem and TomTom may even send you an alternative replecement (i havent tried though but i may have to soon).Other than that this is a high end unit and a very reliable navigation system.

5 Star Review tomtom go 910

Strengths:

big screen, storage, bluetooth, european maps

Weaknesses:

no sd card slot

Posted Sep 20, 2007 - this is an amazing feature-packed product. it has both us, canada, as well as european maps, integrated hands-free bluetooth, and mp3 player. if that was not enough, it also has 20 gb of internal memory . granted that about 8 gb of memory is already used up for maps, you can still store 12gb worth of music, video etc. and for the price that i paid , it beats garmin hands down-garmin is about $300-$400 more expensive for the features that this one has
