5 Star Review Garmin nuvi 200 GPS

Strengths:

Low priced entry level pocket GPS. Compact. New software upgrade from Garmin locks satellites faster. Accurate. Brilliant screen with adjustable brightness & automatic day/night colors. Loud speaker.

Weaknesses:

No bluetooth, No TTS: -> Speaks turn directions, not street names. Has SD card slot, calculater, currency/unit converter, world clock & .jpg viewer with input for custom points of interest (POI's).

Posted Dec 10, 2007 - Baseline workhorse of the nuvi line. I've had this nuvi model-200 for 12 months now in Hawaii and cannot say enough about it. Excellent easy to learn touch-screen user interface and very rugged. (Mine has survived some major drops on concrete, no problems). I recently upgraded to the nuvi-260 with TTS (see my review on the nuvi-260). .. *New! Garmin has released several new software updates available on their web site and also a flash update for the WAAS enabled Bravo/SiRFstarIII satellite chipset available through their new web updater, along with many new voice languages & new vehicle icons. The unit locks on satellites anywhere in the house now quickly. Streets, direction and ETA are clearly marked on the main map screen. Tap the position indicator anytime for current lat/long/elevation, or enter lat/long coordinates for simple geo-caching or [dry] boating (has off-road navigation mode). Customizable .jpg splash screen. You can upload & view .jpg pics on the unit from a pc via the USB cable or through the SD card slot on the unit. .. The nuvi-200 unit comes with (updated) Navteq NT-2008 maps for the lower 48, Hawaii & Puerto Rico. If you need US/Canada/Alaska try the nuvi-250; or the nuvi-270 which has US/Canada/Alaska + Europe, the new charcoal-black nuvi-260 has US/Canada/Alaska + TTS. TTS = Text to Speech which announces the street names, Interstate numbers, exit numbers and P.O.I. names). The unit comes with a dash mount, car charger and USB cable for updating the unit through your computer (unit will also charge through the USB cable). (I put some stick-on velcro on the back of my unit and on my upper dashboard and it works great!) You can buy online an (optional) Garmin home ac adapter/charger $15. and nice Garmin leather case $15. (recommended). Long 5 hour battery life off a 3-4 hour charge. .. Compact size, about the size of a deck of cards; fits easily in a pocket or small purse. Solidly built, clean looks and simple to learn and use. Excellent entry level pocket GPS for the beginner and experienced users alike. A winner! With prices now well under $200. [street] you cannot go wrong with the nuvi-200. (*Note: The nuvi-260 with US/Alaska/Canada + TTS is now under $250. [street], consider it). The baseline nuvi-200 is a very cool, useful & proven GPS unit, everyone I show it to is amazed. Excellent value at current prices, makes the perfect gift. You will not be disapointed. Never get lost again!

5 Star Review garmin nuvi 200 GPS

Strengths:

Absolutely the easiest piece of equipment to use

Weaknesses:

Personally, I can't think of any

Posted Oct 28, 2007 - After getting lost and loosing numerous time because of this I decided to purchase this garmin. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Simple to operate and I just love it. I now feel so safe having this piece of equipment in my car. I highly recommend this to everyone. I also intend to buy another one for my daughter.

5 Star Review Great Bang for the Buck!!

Strengths:

Small, thin, easy to use... Does the Job...

Weaknesses:

Nothing that is a deal breaker

Posted Nov 18, 2007 - I bought this to use on our road trips in Europe and then gave that to a friend... Bought a new one for the US and it works great... Mine came with the 2008 maps loaded and then I updated the POIs off of the Garmin website in minutes... Same mapping program as the more expensive Garmin models... just without all the useful or useless extras... I didnt need the bluetooth, live traffic, etc... I have a headset and can still hear the traffic on 880am... Worth the price tag and very easy to use.. No complicated menus and above average POI (points of interest) database... best of all, you can customize any POI (change address, update phone number, change map symbol) or add your own house or a new bank or a new restaurant within seconds... A very good buy and perfect gift.

5 Star Review Garmin 200 GPS

Strengths:

Very accurate device, long battery life, easy to use, preloaded maps.

Weaknesses:

The device picks up satellites a little slowly

Posted Aug 27, 2007 - The GPS is replaced my previous Pioneer AVIC-S1. After several times tested. It is really a good gear. More accurate map and more powerful battery life than S1. I haven't looked at the LCD panel once because the audio direction is very clear and easy to use. I haven't had any problems with accuracy and the POI's are very handy in unfamiliar areas. I love this GPS unit and would recommend it to anyone who gets lost easily!

4 Star Review nuvi 200

Strengths:

nice portable size, good voice directions, easy to use, plenty POIs, nice visual mapping, uses NAVTEQ mapping

Weaknesses:

sometimes it takes a while to obtain a satellite signal

Posted Aug 2, 2007 - First used this on our California vacation. The very first day, it wouldn't get a satellite signal. Don't know what the problem was because we made sure it was charged up beforehand, so unfortunately, we didn't have a backup map and relied mainly on our instincts and road signs. But, after that, we tried it again the next day of our vacation. It took a while to obtain the signal, but when it did, it worked quite well. We liked the voice directions and it got us to our destinations. It was handy to have the POIs to help us find eateries. All in all, it is a good device to have, but it might be good to have a map just in case you don't get satellite reception.

5 Star Review In comparison with the Magellan Maestro...

Strengths:

Excellent interface, finger touchscreen, nice display, NAVTEQ maps, can display coordinates and altitude (& /save/route to them)

Weaknesses:

No support whatsoever for ZIP codes in the US, weak detour function, reception not in par with other typical Sirf III chipset devices

Posted Oct 16, 2007 - In comparison with the Magellan Maestro, The Nuvi has a much better touchscreen (noticeable when and it has way more POIs (Point Of Interests). However, I miss the excellent detour function of the Maestero, its better routing options, and that it recognized ZIP codes. It's a real shame the Garmins don't recognize ZIP codes in the US :(

4 Star Review Great Unit for first time buyers

Strengths:

User friendly software interface, compact, lots of POI, custom POI, expandable SD card slot

Weaknesses:

No wall charger, case, car plug shld be coiled, Not pinpoint on location

Posted Nov 26, 2007 - Great starter unit, very affordable, quality product with decent features. Could be a little cheaper compared to other brands available in marker. Price difference can be justified considering the brand value. I nailed down to two of the GPS in my budget range, TomTom One 3rd edition and Nuvi 200. Reasons why I went for Nuvi was sleeker design, brand name, and mixed reviews on tomtom

5 Star Review Garmin NĂĽvi 200 Portable Automotive GPS Navigator

Strengths:

Slim/compact, bright screen, SD card slot, WAAS, low priced entry level auto GPS,

Weaknesses:

No Alaska/Canada maps (2008 maps have only lower 48 states), No Mapsource install DVD to manage POIs/waypoints, no included USB cable, no TTS (speaks turn directions but not street names), no traffic

Posted Dec 10, 2007 - This is my second Garmin GPS unit and I am quite happy overall with this purchase. It performs well for most purposes and is an economically priced entry level portable auto GPS with most features one would want. The screen has adjustable brightness and the UI is relatively easy to learn. Roads, ETA, speed and other screen elements are large and text is easily readable without squinting. Display automatically changes depending on day/night. It is WAAS-enabled and locks quickly and is relatively accurate in tracking your location, and finds the satellites quickly compared to my other older model GPS. The size is compact and fits easily into your bag or pocket and can double up as a portable pedestrian GPS. Voice prompts are clear but might take a little getting used to when it says "turn left then turn right"... The rechargeable battery lasts around 3-4 hours and can be charged via USB. (But the USB cable is not provided in the box!) Unfortunately the american version of this unit only comes preloaded with the North America Lower 48 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The other models 250 and 270 come loaded with additional Canada and Alaska maps. My biggest sticking point with it is that it does not come with the Mapsource City Navigator North America NT Install DVD when my previous GPS unit did. The software allows you to upload waypoints and POIs from your PC to the GPS and view the maps and routes on the PC, finding addresses and points on your PC and is immensely useful also when upgrading and uploading new maps to the GPS. You may be able to call customer service to ask for this disk (YMMV) and you need to register your unit to get the unlock code. There are other smaller nice features like an SD card slot for additional memory (to hold more pics and maps), clicking the car icon for current lat/long and elevation, entering lat/long coordinates, putting JPEG photos on the unit and viewing it with the picture viewer, currency converter, calculator etc. If you prefer advanced features like bluetooth, TTS (where the street names are read out), traffic updates and routing (you need to pay monthly subscription), route uploading and tracklogging, you need to go for a higher end Nuvi model. I personally feel TTS isn't a big deal since the street names aren't read out properly anyway (due to limited text to speech technology) and it sounds robotic. This is a good buy. nuff said.

5 Star Review nuvi 200 GPS review

Strengths:

ease of use, resolution, brightness, size

Weaknesses:

none so far

Posted Oct 25, 2007 - This is my first navigation system, but I have used them before in rental cars. Very impressed with this product. Intuitive functionality, good directions. It does not have any extra gadgets (MP players, bluetooth, etc), but I don't need them anyway. I would recommend this product to anyone.

4 Star Review Garmin Nuvi 200

Strengths:

Garmin user interface, small form factor, bright screen, quickly acquires satellite signal

Weaknesses:

Has difficulty at times with right vs left and one way streets. Suction cup mount can be difficult to remove from window when needed. The screen is a fingerprint magnet.

Posted Nov 26, 2007 - The Garmin Nuvi 200 is my second GPS unit. My faithful Magellan Roadmate 300 has guided me well, but its mount is beginning to show its age. There will be no more map updates for my Magellan and its chipset is not the new high sensitivity type. In looking for a replacement unit my primary concern was accuracy. While I have been pleased with my Magellan, it does have a tendency to miss some streets and Points of interest that have been around for many years. It also is prone to becoming confused between right and left and around one way streets. The Garmin certainly fills the gaps when it comes to points of interest, but the right, left, and one way street confusion remains. I am beginning to wonder if this is created by something tied to the NAVTEQ mapping. The form factor of the unit is great. My wife likes the thickness. It is thicker than the Magellan Maestro series. I am impressed with the simplicity of design, but strangely I am missing the weight of the Garmin C550 I use for work. There is something robust about the C550 while the Nuvi is best described by my wife as "cute." Finally when it comest to user interface the Garmin outperforms the Magellan. The Magellan was certainly easy to use, but the Garmin seems to be quite a bit more intuitive. It can recognize streets and places with less keystrokes than the Magellan. It seems to be a mind reader at times. I give Garmin two thumbs up for this. The Garmin touchscreen also seems to work better than the screen on my Magellan. The Garmin icons are easier to activate. For the price I paid, this unit certainly is more than I could ask for. If you seek simple operation and an attractive form factor then this could be the unit for you. If you are looking for something more robust look to a Nuvi widescreen receiver or even the Garmin Streetpilot C Series. My Roadmate 300 still works and I am sure I will pull it out from time to time so we can take a trip together.

4 Star Review GARMIN nuvi 200 GPS

Strengths:

Easy to read & easy to use.

Weaknesses:

Sometimes acquiring the satellite signal was a little slower than I would have liked.

Posted Dec 13, 2007 - Recently went home & much has changed. I've been gone many years. I liked the routes it provided for my various trips including routing through snow covered roads. With the many changes in roads & homes, etc. I would have been lost many times. Instead the GPS got me where I wanted & needed to go. It has been excellent in my current home town, too.
