3 Star Review Good hardware; software and support is spotty

Strengths:

Large screen, good daylight visibility, good voice output, good basic street nav

Weaknesses:

Awkward user interface - too hard to do simple things you would want to do with a nav product. Customer support has some problems.

Posted Jul 30, 2007 - Customer support is spotty. Had to return the first unit because updating on the computer rendered it inoperative, not fixable by the owner. Phone support said the software shipped with the unit was faulty and a patch was expected in 2 weeks; return the unit to vendor. Vendor said it was a known problem and replaced the unit promptly. However, TomTom email support said there was nothing wrong with the software and I must have disconnected the unit while updating (I didn't). And, anyway, Is there any excuse for having a unit become completely inoperable and not user-fixable, regardless of what computer interaction takes place? Computers come with a complete factory-restore capability. Why not a nav system? It's just a computer with GPS.

5 Star Review I have 4 Garmin units and this Tom Tom

Strengths:

Easy to use, basic, no crazy extras, works well, big screen, GREAT PRICE

Weaknesses:

Takes a day to learn, not super techy

Posted Dec 21, 2007 - I have 4 Garmin products at work and the fat units work great, I am not so impressed with the longevity of the Nuvi. This Tom Tom works great, is easy to use, and great for your basic user. I am the guy who likes his cell phone to make and receive calls, his GPS to get him where he wants him to go, and his computer to receive internet. I DON'T want my GPS making calls, my cell phone getting internet, and my computer having built in GPS... I want a camera, to, you guessed it, take pictures, not my cell phone taking pictures, if you agree with me you may like the Tom Tom XL. If not, go drop a load of money and you can get your pictures to be viewed on your GPS, good luck. Chris

5 Star Review Great Buy!

Strengths:

Ease of use. Varied POIs. Intuitive.

Weaknesses:

Doesn't do my taxes.

Posted Sep 30, 2007 - I've been using one for a few months now, and it's really been great. The wider screen is great for people like me who cant see anything as is. It's really easy to use (my computer illiterate mother even gets it working). Best of all it cut 20 minutes off my morning commute giving me an alternate route. Works great in city areas too.

4 Star Review Excellent Basic GPS System.

Strengths:

Simple and easy to use. Quick route re-calculation.

Weaknesses:

Short battery life. Not the most compact unit.

Posted Aug 19, 2007 - This is a pretty basic GPS, but that's exactly what I wanted. It's simple to use, with large and clearly marked buttons. The instructions are accurate, at least in the area I live in. If I missed a turn, the recalculation is pretty quick. Map background color can be changed, and day/night time brightness can be switched (manually). There are multiple voices to switch between (including different languages such as Italian, Spanish and Chinese). It already came with a boat load of voices, but you can purchase additional ones from the web. Finding you destination can be done through several methods: Entering the address, finding point of interst, entering latitude and longitude information, entering street intersection and locating a point on a map. I think address input and locating a point on a map are most useful. One XL doesn't have any fancy features such as MP3 players and picture viewer, so if that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere. I don't have a need for such features, since I have my own MP3 player and an AUX jack in the car. So that's not a big deal for me. The touch screen is nice and big, but could be a little washed out in direct sunlight. If I'm wearing sun glasses, the problem goes away. Also, the voice command is pretty good at giving advanced warnings for upcoming turns, so I didn't have to stare at the screen the whole time anyway. The size is bigger than I thought. All the promo photos make this device look slim, when in fact it's pretty thick. It'll still fit in a nice backpack pocket, just not your shirt pocket. The battery life is much shorter than the 2 hours advertised. Although most of the time, it'll be plugged into the car anyway. Overall, One XL is a basic GPS and does a very good job at it. Hey, asking Tom Tom really does beat asking Sue Sue.

5 Star Review Great Work TomTom

Strengths:

Improved mount, very easy to use, accurate, works right out of the box.

Weaknesses:

No weakness yet

Posted Jun 4, 2007 - I've been using the ONE XL for about a week now and I love the new device. I have been waiting for it to come out and it has met all my expectations. The new Tele Atlas maps are great and more accurate than ever. I actually used the POI feature this past weekend to find a golf course near me. The XL is very similar to the ONE but has a larger, easier to read screen. I highly recommend this device for anyone looking for a GPS unit.

5 Star Review Sweet GPS, recommended to all

Strengths:

Great maps, widescreen helpful, super easy to use even without looking at directions, great all around gps.

Weaknesses:

Posted Jun 24, 2007 - I'm not the most versed in GPS systems, but as soon as I opened this one, I immediately loved it. It got me across several states and gave me peace of mind on a long car drive by myself. The maps were great and the device worked wonderfully over all. Loved it.

4 Star Review Widescreen Worth It

Strengths:

The implementation of the widescreen while not making the ONE XL any thicker than the original ONE is a big plus. The strength of the ONE has built upon by stretching it out without taking away.

Weaknesses:

Only accessory that comes with it is the mount.

Posted Jun 27, 2007 - I recently upgraded from the TomTom ONE to the XL and I'm really happy with the new device. It's just like a ONE 2.0 where it doesn't lose anything that I like from the old device while adding something new that is really worth the switch. The ONE was the best straight forward, easy to use device I had played around with and the XL keeps that while giving you a wider viewing area.

5 Star Review TomTom ONE XL

Strengths:

Easy to use, accurate, slim and portable, improved mount, large screen

Weaknesses:

Battery life is only 2 hours

Posted Jul 26, 2007 - I've been using the ONE XL for over a month now and I am very happy with this device. It is very accurate and the POIs have come in handy several times. What I love most about the XL is how easy it is to use. You just input the destination and the TomTom does the rest. The mount has been rock solid and I've had no problems with "drooping". Since it's so small it is very easy to take in and out of my car and is very portable. This is a great device and best of all its fun to use. I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a SatNav.

5 Star Review I love this thing!

Strengths:

Very, very easy to use. Picks up a signal quickly. Accurate and easy to understand directions. Large Screen. Fun!

Weaknesses:

Short battery life, needs to stay plugged in on trips 2+ hours.

Posted Aug 27, 2007 - I've been using the XL for some time now and it has worked flawlessly. I've used it on a number of road trips and love it, but it really come in handy when I'm looking for local POIs. It's great at finding my favorite restaurants when I'm in unfamiliar areas. It is very accurate and easy to use. I've used other brands before, and IMO, the XL had the most user friendly interface. I would highly suggest this device to a friend, not only because of its high quality but because its a blast to use too!

2 Star Review ONE XL GPS (City/Vehicle, 4.3" LCD)

Strengths:

Very good for basic GPS

Weaknesses:

No Features - I added memory and still could not play MP3s or do anything else with it. Bluetooth does not allow phone conversations.

Posted Apr 22, 2008 - No Features - I added memory and still could not play MP3s or do anything else with it, the slot for additional memory should be removed because it is useless. Bluetooth does not allow phone conversations.

4 Star Review Tom Tom XL-S

Strengths:

Very user frendly and easy set up for navigation. 3rd GPS I have owned, last one also Tom Tom not too many user changes

Weaknesses:

Trying to get a email answer is impossible & support about the same. Doesn't want to interact with computer to download any updates at all. Get no support other than their FAQ section.

Posted Apr 12, 2008 - My older TomTom used Nav-5 and this one is Nav-6, but many mistakes on 6 that weren't on Nav-5. Very disappointed to not be able to really use TomTom Home as they say it can be used. Support won't answer any questions on helping with this either. Still All-in-All I guess I would buy another if it failed and stumble through it with what it has to offer. Harold E King Kentucky (yes we have running water & telephones here too!!)

2 Star Review Not the Greatest

Strengths:

Ease of use

Weaknesses:

Maps are out of date

Posted Apr 4, 2008 - The Tom Tom One XL has a nice user interface. Easy to use and figure out. The software had problems when I tried to update from my home PC, but I got it to work with my work PC. Support was friendly, but still has not been able to fix my problem. I live in a new development, but my street has been around for 4 years, and it is still not on the latest map. After 30 days, you have to pay $80 for a new map. If Mapquest and Google Maps know my street, so should this expensive service.

2 Star Review TomTom One XL

Strengths:

good GPS, fast, easy navigation.

Weaknesses:

Terrible support. Web site is only geared to selling, support is very week. Their PC software cause problems on the unit. Still strying to get to communicate with support

Posted Mar 10, 2008 - Based on my experience with their support, will not recommend the unit. If experience is only based on the unit I would highly recommend. Since overall, its a 4 out of 10
