Posted Jan 9, 2008 - I read many of the reviews and was surprised, when I bought my Tomtom One third edition, to find that the bad reviews were mostly false. I can see the screen in the bright sun as long as I turn up the screen brightness. I did have a little trouble getting the Tomtom updated online (not that it really needed it, as it already has all the maps in the device). I think around the holidays everyone was going on the Tomtom website at the same time, so after a day or two I got on fine and have been updating ever since with no problems. The most important thing is how it navigates. It got me out of two jams on the interstate a few hours after I bought it (I had never used GPS before). The traffic stopped on the interstate and I hit "Find alternative" and then pushed "roadblock" and it routed me around the jams on back roads like a champ. When I got back to the freeway it was flowing smoothly with few cars as they were all stuck in the gridlock. It has rarely taken me on routes that were not the fastest routes. This device has made driving a pleasure again. Never having to worry about how to get somewhere. Most importantly-NEVER GETTING LOST! I also like the points of interest. I can look up restaurants for carryout(pizza) 40 minutes down my route and it gives me the number to call so I can pick it up on the way(sure beats fast food). Bottomline: if you never had a navigation system, buy one of these and you will not be disappointed.

Posted Dec 14, 2007 - I purchased this TomTom one 3rd edition GPS at a great price. This GPS works great, easy to use, fast and accurate routes. It does not have Text To Speech, but it is still able to take me to the right destinations.

An affordable GPS!

Posted Jan 27, 2008 - I wish I had bought one a long time ago, but of course the price was finally "right". It is so much safer driving to an unfamiliar location. I'm not trying to look at a map while I'm driving. And if I'm not quite sure which turn to take, a quick look at the screen shows me exactly where to turn. I love it!

Posted Nov 24, 2007 - Easy to use out of the box. Display can be seen clearly in direct sunlight. After 1 week of usage it has given acuurate and right directions and quick recalculation of route within seconds.

I love it

Posted Dec 21, 2007 - This is a great device. Even my wife who is not tech minded found it easy to use. A short demonstration and she was up and running. It is straight forward to the extent that i didn't need to read the manual...i just clicked around the screen and browsed the options and selections. It is quite intuitive and easy to use. The voice instructions are great, so you don't have to divert your attention from the road while driving. When i used it i found to be very accurate. It gives plenty of advance notice for turns, exits, etc...first it will tell you eg right turn ahead as you near it...then it will tell you eg in 800 yards turn right, then it will give you a third instruction to eg turn right when you need to. The map is incredibly detailed compared to the older gps unit i had. My older one just had a line for a road..this one has two roadways for a divided street, and it even displays the u-turn openings in the divider. The route planning is very good, giving you options to use the fastest route, or the shortest one, and also verifies with you if you want to use toll roads if there are any on the planned route. If you miss a turn, it quickly recalculates your route and gives you new instructions to get you to your destination. Destination selection is very easy, and gives you several ways to select it: by specific address, by clicking on the map, by entering longitude/latitude coordinates, by selecting a point of interest, by recent destinations, or by a predefined favorites list which you can save. Also, if you click on Help me, it will give you the nearest locations for Police, Fire, Hospitals, Car repair, gas stations, etc etc. It will give you options to get you there on foot, or by driving, and will even give you the phone numbers for the locations so you can call them. What i loved is that it will also give you your location in a text display to read to the operator. eg if calling the police, it will tell you how to let them know your location eg two miles after exit 10 on I-95 at the intersection with so-and-so street, etc. I was impressed. It can also warn you when near certain points of interest via a selection of sounds. I set mine to warn me when near a school...school zone speed limit signs are easy to miss and end up with an expensive ticket (or worse), especially if you are driving in an unfamiliar area. Another nice feature is it allows you to upload your corrections and download map corrections from other users via TomTom servers. I found the maps pretty up to date, but they did miss a closed off road i know of, so i made the correction and uploaded it. Things such as these will ensure your maps are as up to date as possible. Another feature is the integration of traffic data, to help you avoid traffic jams. However, the equipment to receive it is expensive (almost the same price as the gps unit itself) and there is a monthly fee. Only drawback i came across is that the battery charges via USB cable only (or car adapter, both included). Thus you cant just plug it into an adapter block to charge it. You have to use your computer (and leave it on) or use a powered USB hub if you want to shut down your computer. Also it does not have a slot for memory expansion card (SD etc). But with the 1GB onboard, i find it enough to save all the map data and updates i need. You can even use some of the space for data storage, like a USB memory stick Also the screen is smaller than other units, but those come with a higher price tag as well. This is really not a big deal, as you shouldn't be looking at it when driving anyway...that's what the voice instructions are for. Other units come with extra functions, such as MP3 player, movie player, bluetooth etc...but at 2-4 times the price tag. This unit is a very well priced, no-frills pure GPS unit that does the job very well, and i have recommended it to many people

Good Enough GPS for everyday use

Posted Nov 29, 2007 - I had this budget unit (bought for ~$120) for two weeks and it is absolutely good enough for everyday use. The updated software (remember to connect to computer before first time use to get all updates) is very accurate (beat Hertz NeverLost, though I am not sure how often Hertz updated their rental car unit). It's a simple one (no Bluetouth, do not play MP3 etc.), yet it "does one thing and does it well." Strongly recommended.

Great Holiday Gift

Posted Dec 14, 2007 - Great unit! The price is amazing for such a great unit. TomToms are really reliable and have the best maps out of all of the GPS units. I've really come to depend on TomTom

TomTom One 3rd Edition can speak Chinese (Mandarin)!

Posted Nov 11, 2007 - Just got this gear a couple days ago. Loved it. I have downloaded the map update the same day. The next day I downloaded a Chinese version of voice and it worked great. Tried it this weekend. It even knows a rotary just completed a couple weeks ago. I put it on the center console between the front seats. It could receive the signal without any problem. The only thing is the user manual from download. It does not describe all the features. For example, does it also charge when connected to my computer's USB port? Comparing to my previous Sanyo GPS, I like this one much more.

Love it !!!!!

Posted Dec 6, 2007 - This is my first GPS unit and I'm glad I got it.Out of the box I got it up and running in about 10 minutes without reading the instructions.It is easy to program.I wish there were more points of interest within driving range of my house, even if I already know how to get there.You'll have to put the actual address in instead of finding it on their list.There is also a new highway near my house that hasn't been added to the map yet. This unit is amazing though. It gets you to where you want to go and if you manage to miss a turn it QUICKLY recalculates another route.It does not have text to speech meaning it says "turn right in 500 years" instead of saying "turn onto "main street" but it lists the street you are supposed to turn onto at the bottom of the screen. You can get updates from their website which it self is a bit confusing to use at first.You can charge the unit through your computer's USB post or in the car lighter. I love this unit and highly recommend it.

TomTom is great

Posted Nov 6, 2007 - I absolutely LOVE this GPS. We never owned one before, and 5 minutes after taking the GPS out of the box we were on our way on our first route. It worked flawlessly - we even tried "tricking" the device by taking different roads. It immediately recalculated our route within seconds without any errors. It is user friendly and uncomplicated.

Great unit for the price

Posted Nov 22, 2007 - I liked this GPS right away when I started to use it. It always gives acuurate and right directions on the road no matter I follow its routes or detour. It never misses a turn. It's very easy to manupilate. The volume is loud enough. The screen is nice to look at. It's not fancy sice it's inexpensive. But it's cute. I like it. Though it does not have TTS, it's worthy the money I paid.

Easy navigation with TomTom

Posted Nov 27, 2007 - This unit gives nice direction. Easy to use. You can learn all the function even without going through manual. Display can be seen clearly under bright sunlight. 3D map is much better than 2D map. Touch screen is very responsive. It's like you're using window screen. There's almost no lags. This is my first GPS and I start to love it right away. Best GPS unit for the price!

Great Sleek GPS

Posted Dec 18, 2007 - Unit has anti-glare coating, so it clearly visible in bright/dark light, icons are very small and hard to type. In couple of long trips, TomTom routed me to closed roads, however, it was quick to calculate alternate routes and put me on right path. I owned a Megellan before purchasing TomTom 3rd edition and i must say other than the small issues, TomTom outperforms any other GPS i owned. I highly recommend it for everyone as entry level GPS.

Great GPS

Posted Nov 27, 2007 - This is my first GPS. I have heard good things about TomTom GPS devices and now I know why. The device is very easy to use. It worked straight out of the box. I did not even have to use the manual. The menu options are simple to follow. The GPS asks simple questions that help you set up your home location and other options. There are multiple keyboard layouts that you can use. The on-screen keys are not huge but they are not too small either. I did not have any problem in typing the addresses. There are other alerts as well like above speed limit, near school/hospital etc. There are a lot of POIs and I was able to find many of them. Text to speech is not supported but I did not feel a need either. In a few cases, the GPS device does ask to make a turn, but I realized that if you are focused on the road and listen to the instructions, you know that you are not being asked to make a crazy turn. If you look at the screen, then it clearly shows where to make the turn. Overall a very good GPS device with detailed maps. Very happy with it and highly recommended.

excellent value

Posted Nov 29, 2007 - This cute unit works great. The satellite signal is very good even inside my concrete apartment. I used the unit to in new york city once while it worked like a magic. Whenever I missed an intersection or got onto a wrong road, the unit could quickly, say, 1 second to tell me how to get back to the right track. Without it, I belived I would be lost there because the NYPD blocked one street for unknow reason where I must use to access to Lincoln turnel. However, the monitor is a little small. I could not read the street names clearly during my driving. In addition, the mounting unit can not be removed. This cause a little inconvenience when I wanted to use the GPS to walk around. Generally speaking, for that price, this is an excellent deal.
