Discussion of Garmin nuvi 350 GPS
Posted Jan 8, 2008 - I received the Nuvi 350 Christmas of 2006. I like the unit but saw many new highways not showing up so in October of 2007 I purchased the 2008 map update. Early December I received it and after installing it found that none of the new highways in North Carolina show up. These highways have been open for more than a year. Garmin tells me they can do nothing. I feel I have been duped into buying a worthless update and have wasted $70. Any suggestions?

Discussion of Tomtom ONE 3rd Edition GPS
Posted Oct 10, 2007 - I've used an older version of the TomTom. But I really want to see this one in action. The real-time traffic data is a big selling point for me. I also love how small it is. I keep hearing that it's really simple to use so that's definitely following in the TomTom tradition.

Discussion of Mio DigiWalker C310X GPS
Posted Feb 5, 2007 - I purchased this item recently, and I like it, I got upset the first couple of times that I used it because I was pretending that machine to show me the same route that I am taking to work everyday( whether or not it is the appropriate one), then I found out that I am a kind of selfish and I tried it last night to go somewhere without knowing the place, insert the address and it really surprised me, obviously it won’t take you to leaving room but it is enough accurate to take to the destination. I don’t know whether or not the other GPS/Navigator/Etc. with extra features make miracle but I think $200 is very reasonable price to pay for a GPS/Navigator and considering quality/ price this is an excellent machine.

Posted Dec 7, 2006 - I'm trying to find a GPS for my son who lives in Jackson Hole, does a lot of fishing and camping and makes frequent trips to both coasts. I have cut my search down to the Garmin etrex vista and the Magellan explorist 600. Any comments or suggestions on my choices or other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion of Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Personal Trainer
Posted Oct 2, 2006 - I hate it when I feel like a company, like Garmin for example (see below), rushes a product to market, then deals with sheer numbers to make a profit. They know there are problems with a product, but are so eager to rush the product out (to gain market advantage and sell units for the shareholders...) that they do so with glaring problems and let the consumer pay for it. Product design is something that a company has control over, and thorough testing can prove out a good v.s. bad design before you get it to the public. I believe a good company should go the extra mile to make sure customers are satisfied with a purchase. Bad support of a product is like salt in a wound when the product has major problems and the company isn't willing to "do the right thing" about supporting it. Below is a review I submitted recently on a Garmin product I purchased. I've debated the issues of "can't happen" about the usb bus failing, and "what else should they do?", to which I respond - make me feel something less than screwed - how, you ask? By telling me what the problem with their product was and asking me what I would accept as payment to make me feel better, or accepting my original offer of basically exchanging my bad motherboard for the original 305 (or a refurbished one). Is that so much to ask? --------- -------------- -------------- I purchased a Garmin Forerunner 305 about two months ago, and while I really liked the idea of having the GPS and HRM and tracking data, my experience with Garmin and this particular product has not been good. When I first got it, I followed the instructions, got it plugged in and went out for my first run with it. When I got home and plugged it in to my computer USB bus, the computer froze and required a reset to reboot. Once the computer came up again, the USB bus didn't work. I realized that the likely problem was too much current draw on the USB bus, and was going to need to get a new motherboard :( Darned disappointing, but being a computer and electronics person, I went and purchased the new motherboard and a powered external USB hub and about 12 hours later I was up and running again. So, this time I plugged the Garmin Forerunner 305 into the powered USB hub instead of the computer. As soon as I did this, my computer blue screened (crashed) and it did so nearly every time I plugged the Garmin in. At this point I decided it must have been a problem with the Garmin Forerunner and got on their support system. Here is where the real problems happened. Their support person told me: 1. Check for chipset names that are INTEL, NEC, etc. These are compatible chipsets with our devices. 2. If you have a chipset name that contains SiS, Via, OpenHCD, Ali, or Alr, these chipsets are not compatible with our devices and may not allow the USB Card Programmer to function. That wasn't on the package, or in the instructions, but regardless I learned that I had a compatible chipset from the manufacturer. So after letting them know that and that I now expected some compensation for my loss and that something definitely caused my motherboard's USB bus to go bad they asked that I send the unit, cable, charger, etc back to them so they could determine what might have caused the problem, which I did. After a week or so I asked if anything had been determined about what had happened but they didn't have any answers. I told them at this point that I expected some compensation for my damaged motherboard - another unit maybe? Something. They offered to send me a new unit and a cadence unit (for my bike) but I indicated that I already purchased the $60.00 cadence unit and that it didn't work on my bicycle due to the frame/pedal design and that a new unit would help since I really wanted to start using the new toy I bought. After getting the replacement unit which didn't cause any blue screens (after a couple weeks) and seems to be functioning as well as the rest of the ones I've read about (not good), Garmin refused to compensate me in any way for my motherboard - I offered to accept the unit that I sent in back as payment - Garmin's response: "Unfortunately, it appears as if we are unable to determine why the failure occurred given the information you provided. Thus we question whether the Forerunner 305 had anything to do with the failure on your PC. The device you provided does meet all specification standards. I apologize we could not provide a more conclusive answer. I will no longer respond to questions regarding the previous unit.". Unfortunately, I had already sent the bad Forerunner 305 back to Garmin along with the crash dump files from my PC and offered to send them the motherboard several times as well - they were never interested in what brand/make/model of motherboard I had - so I was no longer able to determine if a component had failed in the charging circuit of the Garmin and was out of luck. And that has been my experience with Garmin. Great idea, but a bad company. There are a lot of problems with Garmin's products, unlike many better manufacturers like Canon and Apple computer, they don't deal with the problems in an equitable manner. Be ForeWARNED!

Posted Aug 23, 2006 - I'm debating whether to but the c340 or the Nuvi 350. I paln on using either both in the U.S. and over in Europe. I know thatif I buy a Nuvi here in the States I'll have to buy City Select Europe to navigate over there. But when I read about the c340 at CNET.com they made it sound like it includes both the U.S. AND Europe in its maps. Is that accurate?

NicholasMacerfrom WA Discussion of Magellan eXplorist XL Portable GPS Receiver
Posted Jun 23, 2006 - Item one: Route planning, re-routing, and turn-by-turn navigation are NOT native functions of this device. Like other Explorist devices these functions are only available with the addition of the Directroute software. Native functions only give you a heading to your destination (IE draws a straight line to it, ignoring impedances like roads, or oceans). Item two: Device does NOT have a touch screen. The screen made of durable, hard plastic, and does not process tactile input. Item three: Device DOES have an onboard compass. User must be moving for compass to work, but it’s there.
