The Crate GT series amplifiers are the solid state Amplifier choice of players everywhere. The reason is clear when you compare tone and features. It all begins with the FlexWave Evolution 5 Preamp that emulates the feel and tone characteristics of a tube amp. FlexWave uses sequential cascading gains (SCG) which layers three different gain stages on top of one another. As each stage reaches it's Threshold, it cascades into the next the same way a multi-tube preamp works. The GT's shape control tailors the midrange frequencies to maximize the tonal possibilities of the amplifier. The low-damped power section further emulates tubes by giving a warm bottom end response. Put it all together and it means that Crate gives you the sound and feel of a tube amp without the added expenses! Get one today and you'll find that Crate amps sound good all the time! minimize

5 Star Review Top amp for the money

Strengths:

Footswitch supplied for channels and reverb Clean tone Overdrive

Weaknesses:

Some background noise especially with single coils

Posted May 3, 2006 - Crate amplifiers aren't so readily available here in England so it wasn't an amp I'd tried before but at least that meant I could approach it with an open mind. It suited me because I didn't want a modeling amp and I also didn't want an amp with onboard effects. At this price bracket this rather limits the choice. The first thing that struck me was its beautiful clean tone. It lacked some warmth (like most solid states) initially but the reverb is fantastic and created a tremendous sound. I now use the clean channel alot more than I did on my old amp. The rhythm channel provides a wonderfully warm tone that, while not a tube sound, is certainly reminiscent of a tube amp. For deeper notes it needs a little fiddling to give the notes the kind of definition that I like but overall very good indeed. The solo channel uses some compression and gives a really dirty sound that is perfect for metal. I play Rock, Metal and Blues and I can get a good range of sounds from this amp to suit my needs. For the price it is astonishing value for money with great build quality and, while I haven't had the amp that long, I have no regrets about the purchase.
