Top amp for the money
Footswitch supplied for channels and reverb Clean tone Overdrive
Some background noise especially with single coils
Posted May 3, 2006 - Crate amplifiers aren't so readily available here in England so it wasn't an amp I'd tried before but at least that meant I could approach it with an open mind. It suited me because I didn't want a modeling amp and I also didn't want an amp with onboard effects. At this price bracket this rather limits the choice. The first thing that struck me was its beautiful clean tone. It lacked some warmth (like most solid states) initially but the reverb is fantastic and created a tremendous sound. I now use the clean channel alot more than I did on my old amp. The rhythm channel provides a wonderfully warm tone that, while not a tube sound, is certainly reminiscent of a tube amp. For deeper notes it needs a little fiddling to give the notes the kind of definition that I like but overall very good indeed. The solo channel uses some compression and gives a really dirty sound that is perfect for metal. I play Rock, Metal and Blues and I can get a good range of sounds from this amp to suit my needs. For the price it is astonishing value for money with great build quality and, while I haven't had the amp that long, I have no regrets about the purchase.
