LaCie 80 GB External Hard Drive - 1 Pack

Strengths: plug and go

Weakness: short cord

All was good. All I had to do is pull it out of the box and plug it in and it was working on my iMac. No software needed. The only thing I did not like was the cord from the hard drive to my cumputer is short. Would be nice if it was 3 feet long.

LaCie 80 GB External Hard Drive - 1 Pack

Strengths: sleek, stylish, well-priced, relatively small, quiet, drive is replaceable

Weakness: painted plastic, 2mb cache, case is somewhat difficult to open

Got this to use with my G3 iMac with OS X. The drive itself looks really nice, the case only being slightly larger than the drive itself. It has a nice titanium-esque finish that would complement your powerbook or G5. The enclsoure is actually plastic with a nice paint job. Too bad its not made from aluminum like the d2 drives. The drive comes with Silverling Software for both Mac and PC but I didn't bother installing it. Plugged it into my computer and within a few seconds it mounted on the desktop. No problems whatsoever reading or writing from the drive. Used Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my hard drive and am able to boot from it.

Got curious to see what kind of drive was inside. Opening it up is similar to an ipod. There are 4 clips on each side(for a total of 8) between the case and top panel. I used a sturdy piece of plastic to wedge in between and fianlly the top came off. Inside was a Western Digital Cavier Drive model no. WD800BB, which, like in Lacie's specs, is a 7200rpm 2mb drive. In time I will probably upgrade to a larger drive with a 8mb cache.

Overall, this is a great drive and enclosure. I wouldn't pay MSRP for it though. I got it from Dell for 15% off.

Works like a Hauss

Strengths: Looks, Storage, Speed, Versitility

Weakness: Slightly slow due to USB linkage

This is a great USB HD. I hold all my Itunes music and all of my movies on this HD. It gets used every day, and I have had no problems with this drive. No noise from it either, and I have had it for two years. Its a great little drive. I attempted to run my PVR off of it, and the data speed was slightly too slow, so its good for reading movies, but not writing large files that are being written in real-time.

Fast, affordable external drive

Strengths: Very easy to set up (literally just plug it in), fast, good price, compact, looks great

Weakness: Included cord could be longer

Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this drive. There's little to no installation necessary (all I had to do was plug it into my PowerBook and it was ready). If you're looking for some extra storage at a low price, this is the drive for you.
