admittedly, while scouring the hitachi website for information on what features their laptop harddrives had, my eyes glazed with the over abundance of detail. suffice it to say, my "strengths" listed do not do the hitachi hdd any justice since there is a whole slew of features that go into the nice little package. such things like its "battery saving" function go unnoticed since i use my laptop as a desktop replacement. instead, i have listed the most measurable strengths- its speed and silence. they are awesome! winXP home now loads in no time and i don't hear an airplace engine cranking up everytime i access the hdd! if i had to list a weakness, i might say price, since i did pay about $20-30 more than other comparable 40gb hdds. but presumably this price difference is b/c of all the extra features that these other hdds did not have. but i am satisfied that i got a top of the line hdd with a 3 year warranty. that 3 year warranty alone makes up for the $30 i would have saved on an OEM hdd that can and will break down in less than two years!

TopStrengths: Good price for 40 Gb in a notebook size
Weakness: The warranty is 3 years from the manufacture day and not the invoice day.
We integrate the drive with external Hard Drive Cases and it is the perfect soluition.
The problem that we face is that does not include the jumpers and our case requieres.

TopStrengths: very fast and quite operation, big buffer memory
Weakness: a lttle bit of more vibration compared with other 4200rpm models
I ordered one to expand my laptop storage. Instead of swaping the harddrive, I decided to put this harddrive into a highspeed USB enclosure so that I can carry the drive wherever I go with me. Also that allowed me to save at least days to install operating systems and other MANY applications. I moved all my data into the new drive (even some of my son's DV files). The result! It works great. I even don't notice the data from an external drive. Its speed and quiteness satifies me very much. One little concern is from its operatin vibration. I compared it with one of my small old 4200 rpm drive. I noticed that 5K80 (5400 rpm) generates a little bit more vibration compared with the 4200 rpm drive. I guess it's from the rotation speed.
Anyway, this is a really great 2.5" harddrive that I have ever seen. Highly recommended for whom looking for upgrading laptop storages.

TopI have not purchased this hard drive yet, but would like to offer an idea. It could be that the vibration mentioned in this comment is due to the 3rd party USB enclosure and not due to the drive. It could be that this vibration does not occur when it is used as an internal laptop drive.
Strengths: Quiet, Fast, Reliable.
Weakness: Gives around 36 GB for a 40GB HDD. May be this is the normal case but still 4 GB less is a bit too much.
It is an excellent hard disk for laptops. Provides very fast access. My Laptop's performance has increased since I installed the disk. It is quiet too. But gives around 36 GB for a 40GB HDD. May be this is the normal case but still 4 GB less is a bit too much.

TopStrengths: Small, reliable and easy to install
Weakness: None seen so far
This hard drive replaced my Sony VAIO existing 10 MB with no problems. The install was a one-for-one swap and replaced the exisitng unit perfectly. It now allows me 4 times the storage space. I would higly recommend this product.

TopWell guys I didn't have the luck you had with this HDD, mine didn't have more than 2 years old and suddenly crashes without notice, lost all my programming codes and I had to pay more than $2,500.00 to recover my data, I will never buy this brand of HDD, for me I'm telling you is a real crap.
Strengths: Fast, quiet. 3 year warranty. Great price.

I used this drive to replace a 10 GB 4200 RPM drive in my Apple iBook 466 Graphite. The drives speed and power saving capabilities are great. In addition the drive is quieter than the drive it replaced. Very pleased. I highly recommend this drive.

Hitachi Travelstar 5K80 HTS548040M9AT00 40 GB...
Strengths: Speed,Quietness, Low power consumption, Tech support; Will give your old laptop a new lease of life
Weakness: OEM drive didn't come with install instructions.
I installed the 20gig version of this drive in my 5 year old ultrathin Sony laptop, now I'm buying a 40gig one for a newer machine. Easy install and massive performance improvement, much faster and quieter than the older drive (which in any case had died) AND I get better battery life. Hitachi tech support were also brilliant - I emailed them about the new drive's effect on my drive access indicator light and got a personal reply by someone who obviously knew what they were talking about.
