Having owned previous Lacie drives, they are fast and dependable.
The d2 Extreme External 320GB has a triple interface--FireWire 400, 800 and USB. Having bought a new iMac, I wanted to use an external that would make use of the FireWire 800's speed and this does indeed.
Setup is extremely simple (I didn't even open the manual). With a Mac, just plug in the FireWire 800 cable and power source and you're ready to go. I did screw in the optional base, so the unit can be used vertically to save desktop space. After plugging in these connections, my LaCie showed up automatically on the desktop.
For an external hard drive that's quiet and takes up very little room, the LaCie D2 Extreme is hard to beat!

Works as advertised! Have had several backup devices over the years, this is so sleek and looks great. Don't even notice it is there ever. Would not hesitate to purchase again.

Although I just recently purchased this unit for my home office, I have worked with units from this brand for many years... never with any disappointments. They are sturdy, very fast, and very reliable.

TopStrengths: Easy on and off button in front, faster transfer when using firewire 800
Weakness: Not found yet.
This hard drive is very reliable with easy on and off button on the front. When using the firewire 800 interface, it is very fast and can connect to other devices in a chain. This drive does make too much noise and it is very quite. Though the price is not the cheapest, but it is cost effective.

Great drive! No problems at all!

Weakness: not REALLY 320GB!
This drive is perfect .... well priced, great reviews, reliable ... the on/off button on the front is nice. I am using this drive as backup so it doesn't need to be on all the time, so it must be saving me on my electricity bills! My only gripe (with ALL hard drives) is that this doesn't really leave you with an actual 320 GB capacity .... some of it is taken up for its own use .... meaning ... you really only get about 298 GB of actual storage ... something to think about when considering price.
