Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120 GB Hard Drive

Strengths: 5 year warranty

Weakness: Unknown

It is a great hard drive. Great warranty terms of 5 years. The functionality of the drive is great. Great price. I would recommend the hard drive for the price and warranty. It is worth the drive for less than $1 a GB.

Seagate 120GBSATA Drive (ST3120827AS NCQ)

Strengths: Fast, quiet, reliable, affordable.

Weakness: None that I am aware of.

I started using Seagate SATA drives in custom built systems about 16 months ago. 80GB, 120GB, & 160GB as single drives and RAID 1 Mirrored drives. Of the two dozen or so drives I've installed, I've never had a failure.

What five year warranty ?

Weakness: Bought a 120gig sata drive about 2 years ago as a "C drive" . It died on me at about 18 months. Despite their new 5 year warranty, mine was NOT covered.

I was not real happy, given that Seagate is really banging the drum over their new five year warranty. IF the product is so very good , then why do they not cover it with even 2 years worth of warranty ?. Why is it that the company can brag about a five year warranty when they do not really offer it . the part number for my drive is : 9w2813-301, Model # st3120026as, the date code is:03484.

Don't be quite so quick to condemn SEAGATE. For over the past 20 years, I have found them always to be a extremely ethical & competent company. However, the same cannot be said about every vendor who sells Seagate HDDs. Immediately after receipt of any PC component, especially a high-value item like a HDD; you MUST go to the manufacturer website to verify the serial number & register for warranty coverage. In your case, please go to

http://www.segate.com/support/service/model_serial.html

You will find the Seagate support site a rich source for info & tools.
Keep in mind that Seagate drives shipped from Seagate to their vendors BEFORE 01 JUNE 2004 have the shorter warranty.

I had a similar experience with CompuVest of Renton, WA. They sent me a Seagate-refurbished drive by "mistake" on 10 DEC 2004. I checked the SERIAL NUMBER at the Seagate website. The serial number showed warranty expiry date of APR 2005! CompuVest only allows 2 days to squawk problems, so I both called AND emailed them on it. The guy I talked to whined awhile and finally sent the RMA & UPS return label. I received the correct drive on 29 DEC 04. Since I now know their game; if the price is right, I definitely will buy from them again.
Remember this: Only you can look out for your own best interests. Caveat Emptor (Let The Buyer Beware).

Sorry to hear about your drive problems but you have posted a review about a different drive. The drive you indicated (st3120026as) is a different drive and has a warranty of 1 year.
