Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Fast, Light, Thin, Quiet, Runs Cooler than expected.

Weakness: 7200rpm only available in 60GB(If you call that a weakness)

This drive is a solid little drive. It is much thinner and lighter than the 20GB 4200rpm drive it replaced. It also runs cooler with only a very light "pur" hardly worth mentioning.

It's performance is solid. Normal use shows only a slight increase in speed but file transfers show a noticable increase.

I chose the 60GB 7200rpm over the 80GB 5400rpm because speed is more important to me than the extra 20GB. I would have bought an 80GB 7200rpm if it were available. I bought the 60GB online for $200, and it is definitely worth it.

G3 Powerbook owners Take note: This is an ATA-6 drive. The G3 Powerbooks have ATA-5 controllers. I have not had any problems with my G3 Pismo but I have read several warnings against this combination.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Fast speed, thats what you are looking for and paying for here. Toshiba now has a 50gig 7200 but this drive has more megibits for the buck.

Weakness: over $200.00 in price, thus only 4 stars. I hope they come down soon. This drive runs hotter then slower drives.

I was tired of the slow seeks and lags in my old 4200rpm drive on my Dell 8100, and I wanted more space too. This sure made a big difference. It is like a desktop now. Of the things you can do for an old laptop before trading it in, this is it, and of course adding memory if you don't have enough. But for game players like myself, well you have to upgrade for the video card, wish that was replaceable, maybe soon. Watch out there is a Travelstar 7K60 60GB Hard Drive (EIDE ATA-100, 7200 RPM, 8MB) and a similar one a E7K60 the one with the E in it isn't really designed for laptops, but you find it on e-bay it's designed for server applications and some of the reader boards out there say to avoid that one. The nice thing is I can take this drive out of my computer when I sell it and put it in my Archos MP3 player or in an external harddrive enclosure or as a second hard drive in another laptop so you can still use it. According to some reviews this is the biggest improvement you can make to a laptop besides having enough memory to improve ordinary day to day performance of your lap top. Hope this helps.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Very fast!

Weakness: slightly noisier than the 4200rpm drive it replaced.

I have been very impressed with the speed of this drive. I installed it in a brand new HP ZT3000 Centrino based notebook and was surprised at how much of a difference this drive made in the overall system speed. I have used several Dell Notebooks with 5400 rpm drives but this Hitachi makes those drives look slow in comparison. There are several sites online that can give you actual benchmarks for this drive so I won't post those here. Battery life was unchanged. In summary all I can say is that this drive installed in a fast Notebook finally brings notebook performance that is comparable to a high end desktop machine.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Fast hard drive, large capacity, quiet operation.

Weakness: Some vibration in notebook due to 7200 rpm speed.

This is an excellent replacement upgrade hard drive for notebooks. Drive is fast at 7200 rpm. The 7K60 operating temperature is much lower than other Hitachi drives. While the drive is very quiet, the only drawback I've noticed is that you can feel a slight vibration in the notebook case, probably due to the 7200 rpm speed.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Excellent performance that allows my Dell laptop to perform on par and even outperform some of my desktops.

Weakness: None that I can tell.

I am very glad I purchased this drive. Not only did it allow my 3.2Ghz Dell Inspiron 5150 to operate at it's full potential it did so without any more noticeable noise, battery drain than the drive that it came with. Great upgrade for any laptop user.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Fast & Quiet

Weakness: None so far

My old drive from my Dell died so I decided to upgrade while I was replacing it. Went from 30G 4200RPM, to this one and I love it. I thought it might be noisier or hotter but it's not. It's super quiet and blasts through files like it's its job.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Has decreased my boot up time by half. Much quiter than expected. Applications run much faster and more smoothly.

Weakness: It has reduced my battery life some. My HP zt3000 was getting four and a half hours with my old 4200rpm drive and now it gets about three and a half. Maybe I can tweak it a bit?

I am pleased with the overall performance of the drive and would recommend this to anyone who wants desktop speeds from their laptop. All the applications that I have tested run much more smoothly than before. AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Maya, and Revit are the programs that I use most and they don't suffer from the annoying hard drive hiccups that plagued them before. There is nothing worse than trying to shade objects and having the computer stall for a second or two.

There are some battery saving settings to park the heads when they're not in use. The place to configure them depends on your OS, but it shouldn't be too hard to find and it'll probably help you reclaim some of that battery life.

Strengths: fast and quiet

Weakness: price

very nice upgrade even for a newer laptop. I upgraded my toshiba satellite 2455-S305 from its original toshiba 4200RPM hard drive to this 7200RPM hard drive and it makes a big difference. It cuts down boot time to a fraction of the time. It is so fast i forget that i am working on my laptop. I still haven't tried it with video editing or gaming but considering how fast it installed windows xp i think the game play of halo will no longer be held back by the slow stock 4200RPM hard drive. This drive is so much quieter then the toshiba drive, i can only hear it if the room is really quiet and i put my ear close to it. My laptop is now 1 year old (bought it in june of last year) but with this new hard drive it feels brand new. No more waiting 5 minutes in the morning for it to start up and no more waiting for it to come out of stand by (if it came out at all) now when it comes out of stand by it only takes the hard drive about a second to spin up and show me my desktop. it is a bit warmer then my privious hard drive and does have a small viberation but i expected a lot worse from reading the other reviews. it is still a expensive hard drive but it is worth the speed.

Even if your laptop isn't that old it is still a very good upgrade, expecialy for gamers and people who hate the grinding sound of a hard drive.

Strengths: Speed! Very little noise! Performance increase! Overall excellent drive for notebooks! Highly recommend!

Weakness: none

This is gonna be my second purchase of this drive. I've already upgraded one of my notebooks and the increase in speed and performace is really noticable. I'm buing second to upgrade my wife's notebook! I've been very satisfied with this tiny drive... it exceeded all of my expectation. I recommend everyone to buy this drive. It's worth every penny!

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Speed like you are used to on your desktop workstation. Overall system improvements on higher end laptops.

Weakness: None thus far.

I expected the battery life on my laptop to have been reduced after installing this drive but I have found approximately the same battery life. I know that doesn't seem to make sense. I don't hit my drive continuously when on the road (like listening to MP3s for hours). I believe that intermitant drive usage combined with faster spin-up/write speads (compared with my old 4500RPM drive) results in the approximatley the same battery life.

Even if the drive does reduce your battery life I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the improved performance on you laptop. I have found that there is nothing that kills a high end laptop like a slow drive.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Very fast, great seek time.

Weakness: Might generate too much heat for some users. Installed in a Titanium Powerbook, and I noticed no appreciable heat increase.

This drive rocks! It's fast, tiny and performs exactly as advertised. The 7200 rotational speed really makes a difference for on-the-spot audio and video editing projects. Other than dreaming of it being just a bit larger (and I believe there's an 80 GB version in the works) I can't imagine how it could be any better!

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Quiet, Fast. I have not yet tested how long the battery will last with it. However it works much better than my old travelstar djsa-220.

Weakness: It is still a bit pricey at approx $4/Gb. Died after a year. Hitachi doesn't have good replacement program.

After a year, one day it started making clicking noise and that was the end of it. Could not recover any data. Hitachi refused to ship one before they receive the dead one - never had this problem with IBM's harddrive division which Hitachi bought a while ago.
Now after 2 months the replcement (refurbished as usual) suddenly became extremely slow. Will have to get new replacement. I am very disappointed.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: FAST! Plug-n-play.

Weakness: A little pricey.

This is one of the best ways, after increasing memory, to breathe new life into an older laptop. The form factor is such that should fit most any laptop (it's a thin 2.5" form factor instead of the thicker one which won't fit some notebooks). If all you need is more space you're much better off getting a 5400 rpm drive at a much lower cost. However, if you need speed, this is you're best bet at this point.

Strengths: 7200 RPM, 8 MB Cashe, Size.

Weakness: Like all 2.5 inch drives, price.

The price is competitive when compared to other 2.5 inch drives. I only wish 2.5 inch drives prices were closer to desk top drives.

The drive is faster and quieter then my original 40 GB drive and the extra space is nice.

I'm sure an 7200 rpm, 8 MB, 80 GB drive is coming but I could not wait.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Seat of the pants faster, quieter and I have not noticed any additional heat.

Weakness: none.

I was fortunate enough to find this hard drive from Newegg after searching numerous vendors for a reasonable price. First off, it is amazingly easy to switch hard drives on laptops. Usually it is one screw to the remove the "caddy" and four additional screws mounting the hard drive to the caddy. After the easy swap, you will recognize a significant speed increase in regards to startup and daily usage of your computer. It feels like I put a new processor in it. I absolutely recommend this drive to anyone who is looking for a true speed increase that you can feel.

Strengths: Very quiet and fast! You will notice your applications run faster with this drive.

Weakness: It gets hot.

This is definitely a big speed jump from a 4200 RPM drive.

Great price from zipzoomfly.com ($232) (formerly googlegear.com) Save at least $100 if you purchase there rather than on eBay or most other retailers.

Hitachi Travelstar HTS726060M9AT00 60 GB Internal...

Strengths: Fast drive speeds, high capacity drive

Weakness: Only 8MB Cache - could improve on this regard

The Drive performs very well with high transfer speeds, but a higher cache could provide this drive with better performance. Many of Toshiba's 5400 RPM drives already come with 16MB Cache and costs less than the Hitachi / IBM Travelstars. Though both the drives offer good performance and with Toshiba costing less than Hitachi, it would beg the question - why the slightly higher price for a lower Cache hard drive? So far, this is the only drive that I have seen that runs at 7200 RPM with a 2.5" Form Factor. I hope the price will come down when more manufacturers start making these drives.

Disappointed

Strengths: Quiet, good speed

Weakness: Premature death

Died after 18 months of modest, but daily service. No indication of problem before it quit. Otherwise, it worked well and was a big improvement in capacity over the original 20GB drive. Used in Compaq Evo N1015v laptop.
