Posted Oct 13, 2005 - Great upgrade. Much faster boot times and real difference in file opening speeds. Very quiet, quieter than toshiba 80GB that I was using. Can only hear very quiet clicks. Cannot hear the spin of the drive over the notebook fan noise.

Hitachi Travelstar 80G 7200RPM 8M Cache 2.5

Strengths:

This unit pack a punch with lots of capacity.

Weaknesses:

None that I have found.

Posted Oct 12, 2005 - This is a very speedy drive with the 7200 RPM spindle speed and the 8M cache. It increased my performance on my IBM laptop substantially over the old 5400 RRM 2M cache drive that it replaced as well as doubling my capacity from the old 40G. I would highly reccomend this drive for anyone wanting to improve the performance on a laptop PC.

Travelstar-80GB hard drive

Posted Jan 12, 2006 - This is a great addition to my lap top, and one I've been waiting to do since I bought it. When I bought my lap top two years ago, these drives were about $300, you can now buy them for half price. My machine is considerably fast with this drive, when compaired with the old drive, and especially when the old drive was cold it could be very slow. Installation was quite easy, but then again I do it a lot.

VERY FAST, low power consuption.

Some noise. Expensive.

Posted Nov 26, 2005 - In average, across multiple tests it shows 50% improvement over 5400rpm Fujitsu HDD. Heat level is below average. Some noise when active read/write. Idle is quite. Low power consumption. Summary: great product, but expensive.

New speed for the old laptop

Price, but you get what you pay for.

Posted Nov 1, 2005 - Finally a laptop drive that's on a par with the desktop. Plenty of room for larger files, so bringing recorded videos on the plane now is feasible. Faster boots, longer time between defrags, cooler than some of the 5400 rpms I had been looking at. Add in the free, fast shipping from ZipZoomFly and I was in.

Posted Jan 10, 2006 - Great drive, fast. This was a nice improvement in my wife's Sony Vaio VGN-S360P performance. This is the second Hitachi drive upgrade I've done to different laptops. Absolutely no complaints.

an okay 7200 rpm drive

Strengths:

Expensive, broken after 6 months

Posted Jul 1, 2007 - I used this hard drive to upgrade a IBM thinkpad T43p. Compared with the original Fujitsu 5400RPM hard drive, this Hitachi hard drive is noticably faster. For example, my windows start-up time is now cut down to 10s. The hard drive noise is generally weaker than the noise from the fan, so the noise from the hard drive itself has little effect on the overall noise level. Update: This hard drive started to make loud click sounds after 6 months and freeze my computer from time to time. Will do a RMA soon. It is now removed from my laptop and used in a external hard drive enclosure.

Notebook monster

Posted Dec 16, 2005 - Unfortunately my Acer TravelMate Notebook hard drive failed me. It was the Toshiba 80 GB 5400 rpm ATA drive. I did a lot of research and subsequently had the Hitachi 80 GB 72 rpm (8mb cache) Travelstar overnighted. This drive is amazing. There's a huge difference in the access of all my files and there was at best, double performance increase. If you do any Google searches on this particular drive you'll find various sizes, but all superior reviews. I originally wanted the 100 Gigabyte Drive, but everywhere I had looked was sold out.

Posted Nov 23, 2005 - I am overall satisfied with this HD's performance. I am using a 74G raptor for my desktop and this little one boosts my laptop's performance close to my desktop. Another thing that I notice is constant hissing sound in a quiet environment but it's not bordering.

Great Performer!

Posted Nov 23, 2005 - I replaced the Fujitsu 4200RPM 60GB drive in my HP ze4805 laptop with this one, and the disk access performance increase is great! I knew the slow drive was dragging down the perceived performance of my laptop, but this is amazing by how much. This drive does run a little hotter than the Fujitsu, but that's expected due to the increased disc speed. I downloaded and ran the Hitachi Feature Tool, and the drive is running at 45C, which is well within the safe zone. If you're looking for an affordable upgrade for your laptop, I'd recommend more memory first then this hard drive.
