5 Star Review Own 5 of these drives, no problems

Strengths:

Reliable

Weaknesses:

None perceived

Posted Oct 9, 2006 - I've operated 5 of these drives for about 4 months and none has given any problems. If they should fail, the warranty is 5 years I believe. I haven't attempted to check them for speed but they appear adequately responsive for my needs. I use them in a storage system for my small network. The storage system consists of a SilverSATA enclosure from Wiebetech containing two of these drives in a RAID-1 configuration (redundant configuration, so that the storage unit works even if one of the two drive fails). The two drives are designated as primary and secondary. The primary is always in place but the secondary gets swapped out at regular intervals according to a Tower of Hanoi disk rotation scheme to create backup copies (the Wiebetech unit clones the primary to the newly inserted drive every time I do a swap). For myapplication, the key requirement is reliability and so far this drive has not let me down. I am currently planning to buy a couple more drives of the same type.

5 Star Review Great choice, but other alternatives are both faster and cheaper

Strengths:

Large platter size, relatively fast transfer speeds

Weaknesses:

Quality may have decreased since past Seagate models

Posted Apr 12, 2006 - I upgraded from a Seagate 200GB 7200.7, being a Seagate and Western Digital fan I opted for their latest revision. I'm using this on a SATA-I computer using a special 6" SATA cable I ordered from Coolerguys. If you read professional reviews, you will find that Seagate has managed to cram more GB per platter, thus resulting in faster seek times and overall a more advanced drive. Also it includes the must-have NCQ, which shortens the distance the head has to travel before getting to the data. Contrary to popular conception, SATA nor SATA-II provides any advantage except for cabling, since most modern drives only reach a small fraction of SATA's maximum bandwidth. The drive unfortunately no longer carries the mirror finish of the 7200.7, but may not have been necessary since I remember the 7200.7 ran very hot. It also is now manufactured in China, and I have read of horror stories on Newegg reviews about failing 7200.9 drives. However, it works perfectly for me, and vibrates a little more than the 7200.7. This does not, however, necessarily mean more noise; it just makes your case frame shake more. The drive has certainly improved my bootup time, and has removed the slight delays when opening up large folders with lots of files I sometimes got with my older drive. However, as much as I like the drive, a better investment remains the legendary Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB, which performs much better in benchmarks in all areas of performance. Also, with the advent of the new SpinPoint drives from Samsung that are even faster, other drives than Seagate may be a better investment.

5 Star Review Fast and Sturdy Hard Drive

Strengths:

Fast, sturdy, easy to use.

Weaknesses:

None so far

Posted Feb 7, 2006 - This is by far the best hard drive I have had so far. I use it as an external hard drive using an enclosure. I use this hard drive with the Coolmax aluminum enclosure. Of course, this drive warms up like most drives that are doing any work, but it does -not- get hot. This drive backs-up and stores my data very quickly. I use a USB 2.0 connection and the transfer of data is very quick. This drive has plenty of storage--300gb, with a great 16mb cache, at the latest 7200.9 RPM. I highly recommend this hard drive.

5 Star Review Fast & Sturdy Internal Hard Drive

Strengths:

Fast, Sturdy, easy to use

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Feb 28, 2006 - I love this hard drive. It transfers and stores data very fast. This drive is also well made and sturdy. This drive comes with the great Seagate 5yr warranty as well, that other manufactuers do not offer! This item was also reasonably priced at buy.com . I will buy Seagate hard drives in the future. Highly recommend.
