Drive will eventually become corrupted

Strengths:

None, in the end.

Weaknesses:

No off/on switch. Corrupt, unreadable after a few months.

Posted Feb 3, 2007 - I was pleased enough with the drive initially. I got what I thought was a great deal on it. After several months use, I awoke one day to find an error message on my computer declaring "The File Or Directory Is Corrupted And Unreadable". After a bit of research, I learned that others had experienced the same thing and determined the problem is with a "chipset used in external firewire units." So basically, don't get this unless you are ok with losing your data after a few months.

Maxtor external hard drive

Strengths:

Posted Sep 18, 2006 - I got a good deal from Office Depot after the rebate. The warranty is not as good as long as other brands but it's worth it for the price that I paid.

Great economical external USB Hard Drive

Strengths:

quiet (no fan); simple design; preformatted NTFS; Bonus one-year warranty

Weaknesses:

No frills; no power switch; poorly documented warranty

Posted Aug 5, 2006 - This is a great no-frills external hard drive, particularly if you can get it at a good price (which is possible after rebates). It is designed for a Windows XP based machine, as the install instructions have nothing about Macs. In addition, the drive is pre-formatted in Windows NTFS. Great for me, as I can use the drive right away! Other drives come un-formatted or in FAT32, which I then reformat. Its quiet, as it has no fans & uses the case for heat dissipation. There is no power switch, so you have to leave it powered on all the time, or unplug from the wall. Some of the newer higher end USB drives power down themselves when your computer does, which is a nice feature. But as this is a "Basic" drive (as maxtor advertises), you don't get that here! My only real knock is the poorly documented warranty. Some web retailers advertise 90-days, while others advertise 1-year. The maxtor web-site states 90-days! This is truly unheard of, and is an embarrasment, if you ask me! However, upon getting the product, the UPC/serial-number sticker clearly states one-year! I verified this by looking up my S/N on their web-site. So bravo for correcting this, but shame on maxtor for not updating their documentation!

Good external HDD for casual use

Case can not be opened easily, only 90 day warranty, no powr button, meagre software bundled

Posted May 30, 2007 - Bought this cheap after rebate and found it to be good for causal use only. The drive transfer rate is not good enough for heavy usage. This drive also can not be turned off when not in use. To turn it off you will have to unplug it. Does not come with a backup software and hence may not be a good buy for soccer moms. Worked out of the box for Win XP machine if that matters. Also, found that it makes lot of sound when data is being transfered.

Good External HDD

Posted Nov 6, 2006 - This is a good external harddrive that can be used for backup purposes. It is sleek as compared to similar products from other manufacturers. It is small enough to be portable and is strong for daily use. The hard disk is a 7200 rpm which is pretty fast.

A reliabe external hard drive

Strengths:

Simple design, fan-less, quiet operation and performance external drive

Posted Oct 3, 2006 - This external hard drive is no fancy looking. However it is very reliable, quiet operation. Some external drives use little fan to keep the drive cool, but a lot problems associate with they are the fan issues. Many fan die in a few months or the drives become very noisy. This is a drive for both home and office use. When you get something very reliable, you will be pleased.

fast, light, attractive casing

a little noisy and unstable

Maxtor 200GB External Drive

Easy to use. Plug it in and go! Lots of storage for a great price. Very quiet.

Posted Aug 30, 2006 - Got a great buy on this at Office Depot (after mail-in rebate). The great thing is that it is ready to go right out of the box. Easy - Just plug it in, let your PC detect it, and start transferring files! For me, 200GB is more than enough space and will take me a while to fill. Helped free up some disk space on my old PC. Nice and quiet. No complaints at all!

Posted Aug 21, 2006 - We are satisfied with this purchase. The 200GB model is enough space to hold all our important files and music downloads. In the event that we have to leave our house immediately we no longer have to grab the computer, we can just take this instead.
