The 120GB WD Passport Portable Hard Drive weighs only a few ounces and holds tons of valuable data. It can be easily shared between office and home, or between Maccomputers and PCs. Because the drive is powered directly through the USB cable, there is no power adapter to carry. Designed with an elegant and rugged enclosure to protect the 2.5-inch WD hard drive and its data, it includes synchronization, encryption and Google software. minimize

5 Star Review First notebook external HDD, very happy so far

Strengths:

Attractive design (if you care), good software for backup

Weaknesses:

None so far

Posted Dec 17, 2006 - I've had a number of standard external HDDs, but this is my first portable one. I'm very pleased so far. Transfers were quick enough, and I like the fact that its USB powered. The included software for backing up data is very good, and makes file transfers very simple (and automated). It's nice to have so much storage capacity in a device that will fit in your pocket. So, not sure what else there is to say about an external HDD like this, but, overall its very good performance wise, it looks good, and the included software is efficient.

4 Star Review Excellent Portable Drive

Strengths:

This product is very nice , it is small and sleek. The drive just works and that is the way it should be. It shows up in windows as a normal hard drive not a removable one.

Weaknesses:

The plastic case is a little flimsy but it does make the drive lighter.

Posted Dec 13, 2006 - The drive just works and that is the way it should be. It shows up in windows as a normal hard drive not a removable one. It is very small and light. 120GB capacity is good it also comes with a case. The soft small blue led is nice and not too bright. It's fast at 33mb's throughput for single large files. No external power adapter needed. It is a nice addition to your laptop as additional storage.

1 Star Review Great idea -- if the product lasted and/or Western Digatal's Customer Service was effective

Strengths:

small size, weight, portability, capacity

Weaknesses:

Product failed after about 10 hrs power on; lousy customer service

Posted Sep 4, 2007 - I love the drive, but I’m here to tell you all that Western Digital is one messed up company. My drive crashed and needs to be replaced (under warranty). It took 4 business days, not the 1 business day the web site promises, to get an email reply. The instructions were incomplete and it took several message exchanges (2 more days) before I got adequate instructions to confirm the drive is unusable. I got an RMA, paid $20 extra for overnight shipping for a replacement drive, and still have not received the replacement drive over a week later. Their web RMA status page lists the ship date, but no shipper tracking number. When I call in, my call is either dropped or they are willing to keep me on hold with no hold time indication until I have to do something else and drop out of the queue. When I finally did get to talk to a CSR after more than 10 minutes of hold time, he indicated that the replacement drive was not shipped on the date that the RMA web page says, but he cannot provide a tracking number. Bottom line: don’t trust Western Digital! If you're data is valuable, use a reliable back-up as well.

4 Star Review Beautiful Little Drive that won't work with my G4 Powerbook

Strengths:

Sleek, beautiful. Great price per GB.

Weaknesses:

Not the drive's fault, but G4 Powerbooks owners beware...

Posted Dec 4, 2006 - This drive will not work with your G4 Powerbooks or at least it did not work with mine. Bus power issue. There is a special Y-USB cable you can purchase. I didn't. USB ports one on each side of Powerbook too far away.) So I had to return it to Costco (Canada - where mine came with a carrying case!) who had it on for $119 Cdn ($104 USD). Such a nice compact little drive it looks like it should be a Mac product.

4 Star Review WS 120 GB HD review

Strengths:

Excellent drive. large capacity, fast access speeds, USB bus powered only--no AC adapter required.

Weaknesses:

The casing could be sturdier, but it still withstands daily commutes and use. This is a minor criticism and should not sway a purchasing decision. Manuf. warranty could be longer (only 1 year).

Posted Nov 28, 2006 - I'm quite happy with the purchase. I'd recommend this drive to anyone who needs a large-capacity ultraportable HD. The drive is sleek, reliable, and worth consideration if you have a need for such a device. WD has proven to be rather reliable, as I've owned several other drives made by them and not had any problems. This drive's worth considering (and purchasing).

1 Star Review NOTE: Cypress AT2LP RC42

Strengths:

Small, cute

Weaknesses:

Highly fragile

Posted Dec 22, 2006 - I bought this 50 days ago. Suddenly, my laptop stop recognize this device. I connected Windows Machine. Windows machine was trying to find "Cypress AT2LP RC42" instead of 'WD Passport", which does not exist. Anybody who are thinking to buy this product should google "Cypress AT2LP RC42 Western Digital".

1 Star Review Beware PowerBook users

Strengths:

Works with PC

Weaknesses:

Does not work with PowerBook G4

Posted Mar 16, 2007 - I purchased this for its convenience and size. I liked the idea of not having the extra power cord to deal with. However, the drive will not work with my PowerBook. They sell an optional cord but they are out of stock and it would amount to another $20 to the cost of the drive. I feel mislead by a company I trusted.

5 Star Review Great little drive

Strengths:

Small; sleek looking; works as advertised

Weaknesses:

Expensive, but prices are dropping; may not work in all laptops

Posted Dec 3, 2006 - I have owned many flavors or portable hard drives, including the predecesor to this one (this is the 2nd generation of the Passport series). I like the black color, and it is a tad smaller than the 1st generation. I plug it in, and it works! What more can I ask for. I put multiple partitions on the drive, and plan to do ghost images of my laptop hard drive to it (I deliberately partition my laptop hard drive to have a smaller C: size). I did have to reformat to NTFS format. I like this better than the Maxtor series, as the included software on that is bloated and unnecessary. While a tad expensive, the prices are dropping, and the capacities are only getting bigger!

4 Star Review Beautiful Tiny Protable Hard Drive

Strengths:

Nice case with beautiful black coating Ultra compact design Easy to open the case

Weaknesses:

Ship with only regular USB cable No Optional AC adapter port No carrying case

Posted Oct 28, 2006 - The case design is very compact and handy, I am able to open it easily and swap the hard drive inside. The coating of the case is very beautiful and can match lots of black gadget in the market like iPod and MacBook. The USB cable comes with the drive is a regular one port USB, which can not provide extra power for the drive, my laptop (Powerbook G4) for example, can not provide enough power this drive via just one USB port. I have to shop another USB Y cable for it.

4 Star ReviewI love it!!! 111 gigs and it's small enough to fit ...

Strengths:

111 GB!!! No AC adapter needed; small size

Weaknesses:

Maybe I formatted it wrong, but I can't get it to write from a Mac

Posted Feb 4, 2007 - I love it!!! 111 gigs and it's small enough to fit in a pocket. A must have for PC users with low disk space. The software isn't all that great, but if you format it you can bypass the software and work it like a flash drive.

5 Star Review External portable USB drive: Passport 120GB

Strengths:

small, quiet, powered through the USB cable, fast

Weaknesses:

in some cases a USB power adapter cable might be needed

Posted Dec 1, 2006 - This is a wonderful external USB drive. I needed a small drive that I can carry and use everywhere. This one is very small and light, so it easily fits my shirt pocket. It is powered through the USB port: you don't have to carry an external AC power adapter. Very easy to install: no driver is needed. I used it on: a Windows 2000 desktop, a Windows XP laptop, a Linux desktop (Red Hat) and an iMac. It worked smoothly on every platform. It has a good speed, in general 10 to 20 MB/s. When running it doesn't vibrate at all, and it is very, very quiet. It also doesn't become hot. It didn't work on a powered USB hub, because it didn't have enough power. In this case an additional Y USB cable is needed. Highly recommended !

4 Star Review I love this cute boy

Strengths:

Cute, Slick, Portable, Good Speed

Weaknesses:

Posted Nov 29, 2006 - I have to say I love this drive. It's fairly small but with a big capacity. The speed is much faster than my previous 40GB one built with a Hitachi notebook drive and an enclosure.

5 Star Review Passport Ext. HD Vs. Simpletech Ext. HD

Strengths:

Passport NEW 160 GB HD = FAST, accurate data transfer with Simpletech's 120GB HD slo-o-o-w as mola-s-s-es! My old 40 GB Passport makes Simpletech's NEWEST 120 GB ext hard drive look like a snail!

Weaknesses:

None noted except maybe Western Digital could provide an improved, alternate "back up utility" to replace Retrospect Express - like Acronis True Image! (wishful thinking!)

Posted Dec 27, 2006 - NOTE: Costco in Kansas City market NOW offer Passport's NEWEST 160 GB external hard drive at just $129.99 which WITH tax is still lower "delivered" than any current "online" shopping site price as of December 27, 2006.

5 Star Review Stylish, very portable, EXCELLENT drive!

Strengths:

Large capacit, stylish design, light weight, no power needed

Weaknesses:

no travel case included, easy to get small scratches on the surface

Posted Jan 17, 2007 - Large capacity: 120 GB gives me flexibility on storing most videos, pictures, and data that I need for trip, even long ones (> 1 month and up to 6 months). Light: very light that I can carry it in my camera bag. Stylish design: much better looking than many other drivers and also those case sold alone; but a traveller's case would be better to protect the surface, which is easy to be scratched Reading/Writing speed: good for me, never had any issue with the transfer speed Power: no extra power needed, but you need plug it directly into the USB port from your laptop (it happened once for me that it did not power up when I connected it to USB port from a PCI card). Overall, I think this is a great product, and highly recommended!
