1 Star Review Horrible Drive!

Strengths:

None

Weaknesses:

Everything!

Posted 1 year ago - I've used 120G passport HD for a year and suddenly my computer doesn't recognize this HD so I lost all valuable datas. However I tried to re-format this HD to re-use but it still doesn't work. So I called WD customer support and they said 1 year warranty is expired and they tried to charge for just talking to technical support so I complained it so they gave me free one time tech support! And I did what they said and still didn't work and they said there's no way I can fix this problem and they can't help me either. So I had to throw away. Do not buy this HD!!!!

5 Star Review 120GB nice bargain

Strengths:

Compact, nice shell

Weaknesses:

The case is gloss. I would have preferred matte.

Posted Jan 21, 2008 - Overall no problems with this product. It has good memory for the price and has worked without fail so far (I have saved about 30GB on it). Again it is compact and light (easily portable).

5 Star Review Passport External 120GB Hard Drive (USB 2.0, 5,400 RPM, 2MB).

Strengths:

Friend said WD is the only way to go.

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Dec 28, 2007 - It was a gift, and the recipient says it works great. A techie said that it was a good deal, so I purchased it. So far, so good! It is really cool looking, and little.

1 Star Review Great idea -- if the product lasted and/or Western Digatal's Customer Service was effective

Strengths:

small size, weight, portability, capacity

Weaknesses:

Product failed after about 10 hrs power on; lousy customer service

Posted Sep 4, 2007 - I love the drive, but I’m here to tell you all that Western Digital is one messed up company. My drive crashed and needs to be replaced (under warranty). It took 4 business days, not the 1 business day the web site promises, to get an email reply. The instructions were incomplete and it took several message exchanges (2 more days) before I got adequate instructions to confirm the drive is unusable. I got an RMA, paid $20 extra for overnight shipping for a replacement drive, and still have not received the replacement drive over a week later. Their web RMA status page lists the ship date, but no shipper tracking number. When I call in, my call is either dropped or they are willing to keep me on hold with no hold time indication until I have to do something else and drop out of the queue. When I finally did get to talk to a CSR after more than 10 minutes of hold time, he indicated that the replacement drive was not shipped on the date that the RMA web page says, but he cannot provide a tracking number. Bottom line: don’t trust Western Digital! If you're data is valuable, use a reliable back-up as well.

3 Star Review Good, but some flaws

Strengths:

Looks good, quiet,cool, rather fast.

Weaknesses:

Easily scratches, WD Sync crashes, Activity LED died...

Posted Jul 4, 2007 - I've been using this product for 2 months now, and it has its strengths and its weaknesses. On the good side, it does what it's intended for, keep some backup, just in case. The drive looks good on the desk, is absolutely quiet, cool and is truly plug n' play. I keep in it files for my work laptop and my home laptop, It was the greatest thing to have when I had to reinstall Windows from scratch. It's not as fast as you'd expect, but that's probably because my laptop's Bios default was to keep the USB ports to the 1.1 standard. The bad comes next: the beautiful shiny surface scratches too easily, I have it in a pouch and I'm very careful, but no matter how much I am, there are several scratches on the surface. The cable it came with, is truly short, so if you do not intend to use it exclusively with a laptop you'll need to purchase another cable or use your digital camera's one. At work my laptop sits on a docking station, so I had to get another cable. The activity led just died today for no particular reason, I though the drive was damaged, but it still works, I just can't tell by seeing the rather good looking blue LED. What really bothers me, is the constant crashing of the WD Sync software, no matter how much I update it it keeps crashing, and I'm afraid for my data. I guess that for the time being I' copy all the data to my hard drives, and then recopy it using True crypt, the bad, I won't be able to access my data on all computers. If anybody knows about some descent synching software, please reply. Hope this helps someone...

2 Star Review Great drive but unreliable for large file writing

Strengths:

Great drive. Easy to carry. Good for the price.

Weaknesses:

Unable to handle large file writing.

Posted Apr 17, 2007 - I formatted the drive with NTFS and it hanged my computer, both XP and Vista PCs, whenever I copied a 10GB virtual disk file over to the drive. Readig is OK but writing always seem to be a problem when you have a single large file. Any developers who plan on using it store VPC images should not use this drive.

4 Star Review Fast and durable

Strengths:

Fast, good looking and durable

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Mar 30, 2007 - Got this just before X'mas and had been using it for a few month. I used it to transport big files by also kept it plugged in to my pc 24x7 for additional storage and so far the unit had held up great. It is very quiet when running and stayed cool despite it is on all the time. Fast fast access via USB 2.0. The blue led light ring on casing is a soothing reminder that unit is on and running and not too bothersome in dark at night.

5 Star Review Sleek Design

Strengths:

Light weight and fast.

Weaknesses:

Case not included.

Posted Mar 30, 2007 - Have owned this for a while and used it on my trip to save pictures and videos I took. Unit is quite well constructed and light weight. Plastic casing contribute to the light weight but do not feel filmsy. Ports opening came with cover that protected it from dirts in transport. Transfer is quite fast with USB 2.0. I wish they would have including a casing for it and the cable. But instead that is offered as an accessory for $14.99. Nonetheless a worthwhile investment if you need the portability.

1 Star Review Beware PowerBook users

Strengths:

Works with PC

Weaknesses:

Does not work with PowerBook G4

Posted Mar 16, 2007 - I purchased this for its convenience and size. I liked the idea of not having the extra power cord to deal with. However, the drive will not work with my PowerBook. They sell an optional cord but they are out of stock and it would amount to another $20 to the cost of the drive. I feel mislead by a company I trusted.

5 Star Review Passport External 120GB Hard Drive

Strengths:

Small, convenient and easy to use.

Weaknesses:

None noticed

Posted Mar 9, 2007 - This is a great little drive for performing backups of laptop computers. Just plug it in and the system immediatley recognized and configured it. After that, I was just a click away from backing up my laptop. This drive has enough space to backup all the laptops around the house.

5 Star Review Great Little Drive !!

Strengths:

Holds tons of data, truly portable, easy USB connection

Weaknesses:

None Yet

Posted Feb 19, 2007 - I use this device to store all my digital movies, pictures etc, these files can go as high as 4GB or more to play on my computer or transfer to DVD. The only problem I have read is that some laptops do not have the power in their USB ports to power this hard drive, my toshiba powers it beautifully!! Now you can carry all your data around and share with friends.

4 Star ReviewI love it!!! 111 gigs and it's small enough to fit ...

Strengths:

111 GB!!! No AC adapter needed; small size

Weaknesses:

Maybe I formatted it wrong, but I can't get it to write from a Mac

Posted Feb 4, 2007 - I love it!!! 111 gigs and it's small enough to fit in a pocket. A must have for PC users with low disk space. The software isn't all that great, but if you format it you can bypass the software and work it like a flash drive.

4 Star Review Western Digital Passport External 120GB Hard Drive (USB 2.0, 5,400 RPM, 2MB)

Strengths:

Large capacity; reasonable price; super quiet; no "warranty void if removed" stickers on the case, if you're wanting to remove the drive to upgrade your laptop.

Weaknesses:

USB powered (does not work on older laptops), case is difficult to open if you want to remove drive, case edges are angle ( /__/ ) so you can't stand it sideways.

Posted Feb 2, 2007 - Like most other 2.5" portable drives, it only comes with a single USB cable that is supposed to be bus powered. But this doesn't work on most older notebooks and you will need to plug it into a powered hub or purchase a different cable from Western Digital ($9.99 + s/h). Overall, I like it better than the 80GB ION drive I purchased a few months earlier, seeing it didn't cost much more and has 50% more space. It's a great drive for backing up several laptops or storing lots of files/music that you want to have protable.

5 Star Review Stylish, very portable, EXCELLENT drive!

Strengths:

Large capacit, stylish design, light weight, no power needed

Weaknesses:

no travel case included, easy to get small scratches on the surface

Posted Jan 17, 2007 - Large capacity: 120 GB gives me flexibility on storing most videos, pictures, and data that I need for trip, even long ones (> 1 month and up to 6 months). Light: very light that I can carry it in my camera bag. Stylish design: much better looking than many other drivers and also those case sold alone; but a traveller's case would be better to protect the surface, which is easy to be scratched Reading/Writing speed: good for me, never had any issue with the transfer speed Power: no extra power needed, but you need plug it directly into the USB port from your laptop (it happened once for me that it did not power up when I connected it to USB port from a PCI card). Overall, I think this is a great product, and highly recommended!
