5 Star Review First notebook external HDD, very happy so far

Strengths:

Attractive design (if you care), good software for backup

Weaknesses:

None so far

Posted Dec 17, 2006 - I've had a number of standard external HDDs, but this is my first portable one. I'm very pleased so far. Transfers were quick enough, and I like the fact that its USB powered. The included software for backing up data is very good, and makes file transfers very simple (and automated). It's nice to have so much storage capacity in a device that will fit in your pocket. So, not sure what else there is to say about an external HDD like this, but, overall its very good performance wise, it looks good, and the included software is efficient.

And you barely hear any noisy when its on. it also come with some WD sync softwares. it does not included the carrying case as I was hoping for.

5 Star Review Great little drive

Strengths:

Small; sleek looking; works as advertised

Weaknesses:

Expensive, but prices are dropping; may not work in all laptops

Posted Dec 3, 2006 - I have owned many flavors or portable hard drives, including the predecesor to this one (this is the 2nd generation of the Passport series). I like the black color, and it is a tad smaller than the 1st generation. I plug it in, and it works! What more can I ask for. I put multiple partitions on the drive, and plan to do ghost images of my laptop hard drive to it (I deliberately partition my laptop hard drive to have a smaller C: size). I did have to reformat to NTFS format. I like this better than the Maxtor series, as the included software on that is bloated and unnecessary. While a tad expensive, the prices are dropping, and the capacities are only getting bigger!

5 Star Review External portable USB drive: Passport 120GB

Strengths:

small, quiet, powered through the USB cable, fast

Weaknesses:

in some cases a USB power adapter cable might be needed

Posted Dec 1, 2006 - This is a wonderful external USB drive. I needed a small drive that I can carry and use everywhere. This one is very small and light, so it easily fits my shirt pocket. It is powered through the USB port: you don't have to carry an external AC power adapter. Very easy to install: no driver is needed. I used it on: a Windows 2000 desktop, a Windows XP laptop, a Linux desktop (Red Hat) and an iMac. It worked smoothly on every platform. It has a good speed, in general 10 to 20 MB/s. When running it doesn't vibrate at all, and it is very, very quiet. It also doesn't become hot. It didn't work on a powered USB hub, because it didn't have enough power. In this case an additional Y USB cable is needed. Highly recommended !

5 Star Review Passport Ext. HD Vs. Simpletech Ext. HD

Strengths:

Passport NEW 160 GB HD = FAST, accurate data transfer with Simpletech's 120GB HD slo-o-o-w as mola-s-s-es! My old 40 GB Passport makes Simpletech's NEWEST 120 GB ext hard drive look like a snail!

Weaknesses:

None noted except maybe Western Digital could provide an improved, alternate "back up utility" to replace Retrospect Express - like Acronis True Image! (wishful thinking!)

Posted Dec 27, 2006 - NOTE: Costco in Kansas City market NOW offer Passport's NEWEST 160 GB external hard drive at just $129.99 which WITH tax is still lower "delivered" than any current "online" shopping site price as of December 27, 2006.

5 Star Review Stylish, very portable, EXCELLENT drive!

Strengths:

Large capacit, stylish design, light weight, no power needed

Weaknesses:

no travel case included, easy to get small scratches on the surface

Posted Jan 17, 2007 - Large capacity: 120 GB gives me flexibility on storing most videos, pictures, and data that I need for trip, even long ones (> 1 month and up to 6 months). Light: very light that I can carry it in my camera bag. Stylish design: much better looking than many other drivers and also those case sold alone; but a traveller's case would be better to protect the surface, which is easy to be scratched Reading/Writing speed: good for me, never had any issue with the transfer speed Power: no extra power needed, but you need plug it directly into the USB port from your laptop (it happened once for me that it did not power up when I connected it to USB port from a PCI card). Overall, I think this is a great product, and highly recommended!

5 Star Review WD Passport 120GB

Strengths:

This Hard drive is outstanding. The design is elegant and sleek. The fact that it is powered by the USB bus is phenomenal.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Oct 20, 2006 - I have about 7000 photos that are priceless to my family. I am able to lock this HD in a vault and not worry about losing these photos. It is one of the best investments that I have ever made. I was also able to take the HD to work and burn all of my files to blu-ray DVD. I have my photos on three different devices now. I couldn't think of a better way to protect media. I would definitely reccomend this product to anyone wishing to store files in a safe and effective manner.

5 Star Review WD Passport 120gb

Strengths:

Sleek design, light, portable, low power consumption, USB 2.0 powered.

Weaknesses:

Price

Posted Oct 17, 2006 - I've owned its predecessor, the grey 60gb passport and found that the 60gb was too little for me. I upgraded and got the 120gb. This is a really great drive. As mentioned above, it has a sleek design, great durability, usb 2.0 powered. I carry it around with me all the time and it fits nicely in one of the pockets of my laptop bag. The only gripe I have about this is that the $/gb ratio is very high.

5 Star Review Great Little Drive !!

Strengths:

Holds tons of data, truly portable, easy USB connection

Weaknesses:

None Yet

Posted Feb 19, 2007 - I use this device to store all my digital movies, pictures etc, these files can go as high as 4GB or more to play on my computer or transfer to DVD. The only problem I have read is that some laptops do not have the power in their USB ports to power this hard drive, my toshiba powers it beautifully!! Now you can carry all your data around and share with friends.

5 Star Review Passport External 120GB Hard Drive

Strengths:

Small, convenient and easy to use.

Weaknesses:

None noticed

Posted Mar 9, 2007 - This is a great little drive for performing backups of laptop computers. Just plug it in and the system immediatley recognized and configured it. After that, I was just a click away from backing up my laptop. This drive has enough space to backup all the laptops around the house.

5 Star Review Sleek Design

Strengths:

Light weight and fast.

Weaknesses:

Case not included.

Posted Mar 30, 2007 - Have owned this for a while and used it on my trip to save pictures and videos I took. Unit is quite well constructed and light weight. Plastic casing contribute to the light weight but do not feel filmsy. Ports opening came with cover that protected it from dirts in transport. Transfer is quite fast with USB 2.0. I wish they would have including a casing for it and the cable. But instead that is offered as an accessory for $14.99. Nonetheless a worthwhile investment if you need the portability.

Strengths:

Friend said WD is the only way to go.

Weaknesses:

Posted Dec 28, 2007 - It was a gift, and the recipient says it works great. A techie said that it was a good deal, so I purchased it. So far, so good! It is really cool looking, and little.

5 Star Review 120GB nice bargain

Strengths:

Compact, nice shell

Weaknesses:

The case is gloss. I would have preferred matte.

Posted Jan 21, 2008 - Overall no problems with this product. It has good memory for the price and has worked without fail so far (I have saved about 30GB on it). Again it is compact and light (easily portable).

4 Star Review Excellent Portable Drive

Strengths:

This product is very nice , it is small and sleek. The drive just works and that is the way it should be. It shows up in windows as a normal hard drive not a removable one.

Weaknesses:

The plastic case is a little flimsy but it does make the drive lighter.

Posted Dec 13, 2006 - The drive just works and that is the way it should be. It shows up in windows as a normal hard drive not a removable one. It is very small and light. 120GB capacity is good it also comes with a case. The soft small blue led is nice and not too bright. It's fast at 33mb's throughput for single large files. No external power adapter needed. It is a nice addition to your laptop as additional storage.
