The Barracuda 7200.7 product family is designed for today's business PCs, home entertainment PCs, entry-level ATA servers and Network-Attached Storage (NAS). The Barracuda 7200.7 extends the technology delivered by its predecessor, the Barracuda ATA V. Serial ATA is a faster, simpler, more intelligent interface technology designed to replace Parallel ATA as the PC and consumer electronics storage interface standard. Seagate's native Serial ATA technology contains no translator bridges to reduce performance. Serial ATA provides the industry with a clear path to continued storage growth, data integrity and ease of integration. The Barracuda 7200.7 hard drive's durable design resists up to 350 Gs non-operating shock. A number of new design improvements enable the Barracuda to continue Seagate's industry-leading ruggedness. Fewer, smaller and lower-profile PCB components protect against handling damage. The PCB itself is now recessed to reduce the risk of handling damage. A recessed motor housing and connector with protective nub also shield against handling damage. And the drive's chip set is more integrated than ever, with just a single chip dedicated to both read-channel and interface functions. The Barracuda 7200.7 product family also features Seagate's 3D Defense System to protect users' information from common problems. The exclusive 3D Defense System - Drive Defense, Data Defense and Diagnostic Defense - has helped customers by improving long-term reliability and reducing returns due to handling damage. minimize

Strengths:

5-year manufacturer warranty. Super fast speed and very queit. Affordable price.

Weaknesses:

The only complaint is that this HDD conducts heat more than my other HDDs.

Posted Feb 28, 2005 - Great purchase. Can't beat the 5 year warranty. Very fast and relatively quiet. The only complaint is that this HDD conducts heat more than my other HDDs. My case temp went up about 2C, but other than that it's a very good buy. This drive is definitely worth your money

Strengths:

Faster than IDE drive. Quiet.

Weaknesses:

Posted Apr 29, 2005 - This hard drive has a 5-year warranty and that's the main reason I bought it. I had a maxtor 160gb died in 4 months of use so now I'm considering the warranty when I buy new hard drives. This drive is fast and quiet. Highly recommended.

2 Star Review Obnoxiously loud drive

Strengths:

Very quiet at idle

Weaknesses:

Incredibly loud during activity

Posted Nov 12, 2005 - I bought this drive a couple days ago for my HTPC and I'm debating whether to sell it or try exchanging it through Seagate. I simply can't believe how loud it is during seeks. You can literally hear it everywhere in the house. It's not usable for HTPC purposes, which is sadly disappointing since it's advertised and reputed to be a quiet drive and that's why I bought it.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

very hot

Posted Jun 25, 2004 - This being an SATA drive, there are some general SATA over IDE advantages, such as 150mb/s vs 133mb/s theoritical throughout, thin 7 pin cable vs fat 80pin ide cable for better air flow, and lower voltage, on-board controller. The on-board "smart" controller is pretty important. When I copy large data to an IDE disk, the CPU goes to 100%. When I copy to SATA, the CPU is 5%. In fact this is the main reason I chose SATA over IDE. Specific to Seagate, this version (200GB) has 3yr warranty vs anything Maxtor makes which are 1yr. It's also very quiet. After 1hr of intensive benchmarking, it got pretty hot. But I don't expect it to be so hot during normal usage.

5 Star ReviewQUIET: I was looking for some quite drive, beca ...

Strengths:

This is fast, but quite Hard Drive that you are looking for

Weaknesses:

Hot ? Yes, but so are the CPU, memory and video card.. I was going to install extra cooling anyway. Price ? probably. But it's worth it.

Posted Sep 17, 2004 - QUIET: I was looking for some quite drive, because I got really annoyed by my old systems that I could hear in the office (working) and at home (playing). Most of the reviews and specs that I read pointed that Seagate made quite drives. And this 200Gb Serial ATA is really good at that. SPACIOUS: This one is the largest (Serial ATA) drive from Seagate. I wanted to get this one and so I did. But if _space_ is an issue for you look at Maxtors - they have 250Gb SATA drives. Although, I personally would prefer smaller Seagate - 200Gb should be enough for awhile ;) PRICE: At the time when I was shopping for the drive (Labor Day) I saw rebates for another 200Gb Seagate (ATA100) drive. That rebate would bring it to about $60-65. So, I was given a choice to go for the price or for the speed. I felt for the speed :) because I had Serial ATA controller on the motherboard. And I did not regret so far. FAST: Oh, yeah! It is fast. Compare ATA100 drives and this Serial ATA one, you can feel the difference right away. What would you do when you get 200Gb drive ? Well... I would start saving much bigger files than I did before. So, I believe that Serial ATA speed will come handy here. WOULD I GET ANOTHER ONE ? Actually, I might. Maybe not right now, but when I play more with this one. I got new motherboard with SerialATA controller and it also allows to build "RAID 0" (don't be afraid of those names, it's easy to configure ;) ) when you have two drives. I think in 6-12 months when price will lower I will get another drive like to add more space to my system and increase performace by using RAID 0.

Weaknesses:

not the fastest!

Posted Dec 6, 2004 - I chose Seagate because of their reputation for low noise, and high quality. I do audio recording, and low noise levels are critical. Actually, you can look at and/or feel the drive and tell it's a cut above. SG

Strengths:

Operates very quietly and accesses data quickly

Weaknesses:

It is somewhat pricier than many other hard drives of equivalent sizes and speeds (but none are quieter)

Posted Oct 27, 2004 - You can barely hear this drive when it runs. It's quieter than may power supply and case fans. I've owned another Barracuda for over a year and the performance and silent operation led me to purchase another one. I've found it to operate at a comparable level. I'd certainly purchase it again.

Strengths:

Quiet. 5 year warranty??? Amazing.

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Nov 8, 2004 - Since 1992, I've owned Quantum, Maxtor, IBM, Hitachi, Western Digital, Seagate and a bunch of other drives. Seagates have never failed me. I cannot say this for most of the other brands I just mentioned. They are rock solid for heavy audio editing (I use mine in a recording studio). This drive has been used heavily and it is rock solid.

Weaknesses:

Posted Oct 18, 2004 - This is the second Seagate hard drive I bought in the last 6 months. Choose Seagate again because they have excellent on-line self support. Diagnosis tools helps you monitor the condition of the disk, setup software are helpful during initial installation. In the event of bad sectors, just run the on-line tool, it will issue a RMA number and send the replacement drive. Very good warranty support by Seagate.

Posted May 9, 2005 - This is my second harddrive by Seagate. This drive does run hotter than my WesternDigital without a fan. When I installed the harddrive fan the temps.are about the same.Seagate has a great web site to download the necessary tools to install this drive.I recommend this drive. They have a videos to help make the job easier. This drive is quiet. You must have 2 sata harddrives to use raid 0 or raid 1. I bought my second drive from TigerDirect. They had this drive for $99.97 + shipping which was still the lowest price.I bought my 1st drive 1-05.Using a sata drive has been different.

4 Star Review Fast

Strengths:

Fast and Quiet

Weaknesses:

HOT!!!

Posted Oct 1, 2006 - I've been building PCs for over 20 yrs now. I have seen my share of new product glitches and quarks etc. One issue is that I use this HD along side two others. This one is very quiet. It also had to modify the bay and installed an 80mm 2000 rpm fan to the belly will get cooler. I dropped it 15 degrees but still not happy with the heat. If your gonna stack em, put this at one on the top of the stack and use a separate fan to either suck the heat out of the bays or blow on the belly of the HD. Just make sure the your no pouring heat off the mobo and Vid card on it or you'll raise the temp and not cure the issue. You might think using a HD cooler or heat sinks might do the trick, NOT! also if your using a case that has no extra drive bays then your out of luck using most hd colling systems and you'll start to use your imagination! GL with your HD!!!
